My grandmother was born on Friday the 13th, at 2:13 in the morning, in 1913!  So 13 has always been a good number around our house.  She lived to a ripe old age, and only passed away a few years back.

No worries about the Elk River mum's beak, Allikat! I was referring to a night about two weeks ago or so, where myself, Liz, and Deedream were concerned that something was stuck around part or all of mum's beak....we watched her for hours and asked the Peregrine Chick about it, etc., but it was inconclusive about what we saw. In the morning, it eventually seemed to resolve itself and TPC said it could have been part of a leg or some such 'food' part still sticking out of the beak while the swallowed part was beginning the digestive process in the crop. Anyway, whatever it was, it ended well and three of us recovered from the night of worry (whether it was warranted or not!)  In the Elk River Minnesota thread part 1, the whole story should be laid out post by post if you're still interested...

Sorry to cause any concern by my referral to the event!  :)

Hi everyone,

Same for me, Liz, with the Elk River chicks. Seeing them hatch has created a bond for me, and of course that long night worrying about the mum's beak ( ::) ), but definately not in the same way with TLC --- I woke up this morning and realized it's been a complete week of mornings with out TLC and P & T to check in on.   Here's hoping for some action between P & T in the next week or so (and yes, a big IF, but one can still hope!  ;D

I'm glad you brought that up, Peggeratheart!

I always think of Friday the 13th as lucky, but mostly for personal reasons: my longtime friend celebrated her birthday yesterday on the 13th and my first niece was born on Friday the 13th in Sept. 2002! So, for me, Friday the 13ths are special and always will be.

I am glad to now also know of the historical and cultural background info on links to the feminine, moons, and and religion.  Thanks!

That's really interesting; and good to learn something new every day!  Thanks, Peggeratheart.

I must disabuse you of the notion that Friday the 13th is somehow unlucky!

13 is linked to the lunar calendar (13 moons in a year) and is linked to women and moons. It is likey misogyny, beginning with mistrust of women and extending to all things female, that motivated people to think that the number thirteen is unlucky.

Not everyone thinks Friday the 13th is unlucky. It is Friday in some English-speaking cultures, Sweden, Russia, Belgium and Germany or a Tuesday in the Greek and Spanish-speaking world.

Other people think of 13 as a very lucky number. (From Wikipedia)
Lucky 13
Quote
In Sikhism, the number 13 is considered a special number since 13 is tera in Punjabi, which also means "yours" (as in, "I am yours, O Lord"). The legend goes that when Guru Nanak Dev was taking stock of items as part of his employment with a village merchant, he counted from 1 to 13 (in Punjabi) as one does normally; and thereafter he would just repeat "tera", since all items were God's creation. The merchant confronted Guru Nanak about this, but found everything to be in order after the inventory was checked. April 13 also usually turns out to be Vaisakhi every year, which is the Sikh New Year and the major Sikh Holiday.

Several successful athletes have worn the number 13. Alex Rodriguez is said to be one of the most talented baseball players ever; he has also signed the biggest sports contract and wears the number 13. Dan Marino, an American football player known for passing more yards than any other quarterback in NFL history, wore the number 13, although pundits in the sport have often cited him as the greatest quarterback never to win an NFL championship. Basketball great Wilt Chamberlain wore the number 13 on his jersey throughout his NBA career. Also, FIBA rules require a player to wear the number in international competitions (only numbers from 4 to 15 could be worn, and as there are 12 players, one must wear 13); Chris Mullin, who wore #20 in college and #17 in the NBA, wore #13 for both (1984 and 1992) of his Olympic appearances. Shaquille O'Neal wore #13 in 1996, Tim Duncan wore #13 in 2004, Steve Nash is currently wearing it for the Phoenix Suns, and also Mats Sundin, wears 13 in the NHL. One of Iceland's all time best handball players, Siguršur Sveinsson, wore the number 13 when he played for the national team.

In Italy, 13 is also considered to be a lucky number.

Colgate University also considers 13 to be a lucky number. They were founded in 1817 by 13 men with 13 dollars, 13 prayers, and 13 articles. (To this day, members of the Colgate community consider the number 13 a good omen.) In fact, the campus address is 13 Oak Drive in Hamilton, NY and the all men a capella group is called the Colgate 13.

In tattoo culture, where symbols often represent the opposite of their most obvious meaning, 13 sometimes symbolizes good luck, especially in "old school" style tattoos.

So on with LUCKY Friday the 13th! If you can't go that far at least this will give you something to consider.

Thinking positive thoughts!

Me too, as always.  I've been watching them all long, so they aren't a total 'replacement' for TLC for me, but still not quite the same.

I really wish I'd caught Tracy on CBC radio yesterday morning - too darn early though!!  :o - Nice day so far. ....hmmm....I think we're going to run out of chat if P&T don't re-nest soon. Still at least another week to wait. Hope there are at least lots of sightings!! - I don't think Mother Hen is there on wknds with her binocs though. Maybe Tracy will see them. Might be a quiet couple of days. Meantime I guess I'll turn on the Elk River cam - not the same but it's still a 'fix' of sorts. Have a good wknd phellow phanatics!!!  ;D

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooddd d Morning Phanatics.  (imitating Robin Williams again :) )

All is quiet and given that I will start the ball rolling for today.  I'm up early by my standards lol, couldn't sleep. They are forecasting a mixed bag of weather here in London, who knows what we will really get, just have to wait and see.  Hope Princess and Trey and an enjoyable Friday night.

I recall that, too, Liz. So, maybe a few of you who live in Winnipeg could stake out some good 'spying' spots on the downtown Winnipeg streets, or that bridge thingy I read about....  Inquiring readers/webcammers/forum members/phanatics in other provinces and cities want to know all the goings-on over the weekend!  I mean, it's not like any of us have given P and T any privacy over the last several weeks, anyway!  A glimpse here and a glimpse there would be greatly appreciated!  :D

Have a good weekend, everyone!
(oh ya, and if you are out and looking up...be safe!!  :) )

I think Mother Hen said, "Have a good weekend" so I guess she's not at work again until Monday.
