Are there any updates available for this site? Any more sightings of Fidler (love the name)?

Last observation I have confirmed for Fidler is that he was spotted along the river near Assinibine Park - an eagle eyed birder with a pair of binocs was able to read his band number.  I hope he does well, he had a damp start to life and it would be nice to see him survive!

Hope our birds find places to cool down as Environment Canada is predicting a high of 38°C today, though I think the wind will be helpful. Yesterday, some areas in Manitoba broke heat records.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/heat-warning-sunday-manitoba-1.4782504

Didn’t see anyone anywhere yesterday but have seen a couple today lounging at the Radisson and at West Winnipeg.  Pip I think at Radisson and I’m not sure who at West Winnipeg they were tucked down too much to be sure.

Since Fidler (AKA Stanley) had not been seen on camera for some time you begin to wonder...soon found him perched at the "Crows Nest" and he appears to be doing just fine.

:) "Fidler" on the roof! Appropriately named. Cameras will let you/us know when he took to the skies again....."Sunrise" or "Sunset?"  ;D

Fidler's first fledge was on Wednesday in the morning from what we could see on camera.  By the end of the day he'd been grounded but was safe and under the watchful eye of some security personal (thanks to Mary & Team!).  After a check by Lisa at PWRC he was found to be uninjured and had the ok to be re-released.  Back up the next morning and he glared at us balefully until we left the roof and closed the door behind us then he skipped off to the nest box to look for some food.  Ella did the honours a short while later and he was off again roaming around the roof top.  Thursday night and Friday night he roosted on the roof wall overnight and we believe we saw him making short flights but can't be positive.  Saturday he definitely was flying and we had a couple of independent reports (including Dupre's) over the weekend and I saw him come back to the roof just before the Rain hit and he (like other chicks) did a rain dance before coming to weather the storm not in or under the box but nearby.  He was still preening there about 7pm.

Congratulations to Ty and Ella .... its a Boy!

https://twitter.com/mbperegrines/status/1015735118353313792

No question about his gender - didn't even have to measure.  Ty and Ella are close in size - she has more mass for sure, but when they are zipping & screaming as they fly past you it can be surprisingly hard to tell these two apart at first.  Ella has had a bad influence on our boy Ty - she's a very noisy, hair-trigger bird who doesn't settle down quickly and he's matching her beat for beat.  I hope she will settle down and be as ferocious as she likes but just a little shoot-first.  I also hope that with her experiences here this year, she will be able to handle more chicks next year - really don't want to make this rescuing chicks thing a habit, must too exhausting!!!

As always, thank you to Dennis for sharing his photos - he'll have more up on his photo gallery soon.

I like the name Loner, or Lone Ranger.  Those "drumsticks" legs are looking pretty plump.

West Wpg chick at 5 days and 25 days...how fast they grow.
My granddaughters Sk & Er had come up with a name for the little boy..."Stanley"
I told them I would make sure TPC new about the name they choose...so I have now done my part.

We are looking to band the lone chick at West Winnipeg sometime in the next week.

It will be nice to get another look at this chick - it was so soaking wet when we rescued it on day 3 in the middle of the storm that I didn't know if tot would make it.  Chick was perkier and drier when we brought him/her back the next morning and without the other three eggs to fuss over, Ella seems to have done quite well.  Chick seems to be right about where it should be at this age.

Glad she had at least one chick to tend to, will hopefully just put her that much further ahead on the learning curve for next year!

A warm dry bed for the night & breakfast in the morning then back to the Ella & Ty. Other eggs showed no signs of hatching so we pulled them & checked their viability.

It sounds like a well timed intervention with a very successful outcome!

TPC, how do you check an egg for viability?

We did and they weren't  ;)

We were in Winnipeg today for lunch at a restaurant close by the nest site, we could see the east side of the building from our table by the window.

I saw both falcons flying over and around the building, not at the same time though. One landing on a sign who looked like they had prey, I think it was Ella by size.  I think I saw a nest exchange because I saw one disappear on the roof and then a larger one appeared and flew around.  When we were leaving I watched a falcon fly to the south and disappear.

Couldn't ask for anything better than that! It was a great lunch for me!

I must agree that early take off has been bad from this site. If the chick frolicks on the rooftop, my wish is that we had cams like the time the Brandon chicks had the times of their live on he rooftop. So entertaining.  ;D

Ella (McKenzie 2015), would this be her 1st nesting, TPC? I'm only too happy there is at least one hatchling here at WW. Hope there are many photo ops, Dennis. Any updates on Logan?  ???

Yes, Ella's first nesting - and you can sure tell  ;D  Took her until today for her to feel comfortable to take the food closer to the chick during meal times -  up until now she has had to stretch a long long way and that impacted her ability to feed chick easily or accurately!  Ty is using his father's strategy at meal times - he catches food and drops it off so she has to leave to get it and he gets about 5 minutes with the tot before she comes back ... then he yells at her and doesn't want to get off.  He of course does get off the chick after a short protest.  It is very cute.

I'm glad there is at least one hatch here, would be even happier if there was more than one - solos drive me crazy.  Have to see what happens this time around.  Ty is better than most adults for hanging out near/at the nestbox on his "free time" so maybe that will make the chick more liable to stay safe until it is old enough to fledge.  Now Ella likes to sit on some window washing mounts on the rooftop (makes her invisible from the ground) so maybe that will be enough to get tot to run around on the roof rather the roof edge or trying to fly too soon.  Only time will tell ... but I'm crossing my fingers now in case I can "bank" some luck for later.

I see the missing Photobucket photos are back again for those who posted in West Winnipeg (and everywhere else as well, apparently). I've sure missed all of those missing photos.

According to the link below, Photobucket has restored the currently hosted images that disappeared some time ago ... so anyone affected may wish to check out their old posts.

Has there been any sighting of Faith either at WW or Logan?

Nope, Faith has been staying away.  Not surprising, Ella is a very aggressive young lady.  Nearly hit Dennis a couple of times :) he's starting to really like her  ::)

A close friend shared this narrative of his recent siting of Ty , Ella and ?

"I was reintroduced to these masters of the air in 2018 in a spectacular way, experiencing, in a relatively short span, aerial courting displays, chirping, mating, repelling of a rival Peregrine, and tremendous aerobatics of swoops, rapid climbs and steep dives, chases, low flying and tandem flying in winds gusting up to 75 kph. Additionally, this falcon and her mate were remarkably successful in snagging multiple small prey birds, which may have been easy prickings for their athletic pursuers in the heavy winds. I will not see anything like this again for a long time!"

Oh no! I've been dreading a fight but have tried to focus on a positive outcome instead. It seems Faith got carried away (at Logan) and perhaps should have come home sooner ... but now I'm feeling sorry for her (and of course I don't want either bird injured).  :(

Ella is on top, Faith is on the bottom.  Whole fight took about 2 minutes.

Now that a male is back here, will be interesting to see what she does ... come home to tried & true or stay with her spring fling?

Although deciding on a mate is entirely up to them, I think Faith will "come home to tried & true" (as she did last year). But she does seem to be taking quite a while to decide!

Don't count on it, not based on today's events  :o :o

We do need another female since Joli passed  :'(

Yes, and that is why I'm hoping a lonesome female will make herself available in Winnipeg.

I'm hoping (at least so far) that Ella will stay in Winnipeg ... though maybe she is just passing through.

We do have what we believe is a male back and holding this territory - haven't seen his legs yet - too stuffed after a meal to do anything but sit in the sun!!
We suspect though from what we can see and from his behaviour, that it is most likely Ty home again.  More news as we have it!!

Faith is still around town and we think we have seen her a couple of times by the nestbox but she's on the far side so no chance of seeing her bands so can't confirm except that the size looks right.  Now that a male is back here, will be interesting to see what she does ... come home to tried & true or stay with her spring fling?

Yesterday after work we were out for a drive and spotted one on the Tower (I think female from the size) and there was one harassing pigeons at the bleachers (smaller male?). After having no success catching pideons, the smaller one headed towards downtown.

Had a bird visit the newly reinstalled West Winnipeg nestbox this morning - suspect that it was the male at the Radisson, but can't be sure but we've only had one sighting here and it was when the male was missing from downtown.  And it didn't look like our new lady visitor ....

Went back over the recordings and our first visitor bird at West Winnipeg was a female on the 18th followed by a much smaller bird on the 20th = not sure if it was a large Merlin or a small male peregrine, by size, through the snow, could have been either.
