Just a little note about RCF's photos. The original building is seven stories( that's what you see in the photos) as you can see it's a little bit of a drop from where Sir Green Boy is sitting. That copper Cornice extends across the east side( front of the building) and around both east and west side for as far as you can see from the photo. Below the wall is a two storey building, the drop there is five stories. Further to the west closer to the nest box wall the drop will be seven stories. So if he should decide to explore the best place to start would be right from where he is sitting. :)

Here is a bit of perspective on the drop from the wall to the decorative ledge (facade).

Thanks for the photos RCF, the ledge is lower down than I remembered it ...

Is that a drop behind him on that wall he is sitting on?

Yes & no.  As I recall, where he was there was a facade on the other side at about the height of the roof.  A bit more to the west (toward the nestboxes) and it's eight storeys to the ground.

Feathers in the eyes sounds irritating, similar to those annoying little hairsnips after trimming ones bangs, i should think.

This is a fascinating series of photos.  Thanks, Dennis.

Supposing the chick is less stressed with the hood in place, is it a technique considered for use when banding younger chicks?

It can be used on younger chicks but with the downy feathers the feathers come out end up in their eyes which can be irritating.  By the time they are this age, most of the downy feathers are gone (usually just some on the top of the head) and the hood sits on smooth flight feathers.

Everyone has their own opinion on the transmitter research that has been ongoing over the last 2 years.
Hopefully this short summary will provide some insight to what is involved in outfitting a chick with a transmitter.
The research is now in it's final year.

The chicks are back in the garden corner (SE corner of the roof) in the shade.  Sun is full out so we are zoomed right in we can get some detail - the silver paint on the roof, old as it is, reflects the light very well, I'm sure it helps keep the building cooler but it is tough on the cam image at times.

Forecast for Brandon today/tonight ...

Day - Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain in the morning, then overcast. High of 23C. Winds from the NNE at 10 to 15 km/h.
Night - Overcast in the evening, then partly cloudy. Low of 10C. Winds less than 5 km/h.

Yesterday's storm = Severe storm, possible tornado hits southwest Manitoba

2154h CDT

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for the Brandon area and east through Morden, Winkler and Morris ...

The kids are all back together in the SE corner, could be they know to batten down the hatches - smarter to do so in the nestbox but the garden corner will do in a pinch as well.

Only one chick still in the SE corner, others have gone a-roaming.  Suspect they will be back together soon enough.

1920h

First chick, looks like the small male is up on the south roof wall ... other two are below eating something, can't tell if it is an old or new meal ...

Still lots of downy feathers on him so it is unlikely that he will be fledging on purpose in the next few days - its windy right now so hopefully he will keep his toes tightly attached to the concrete.
