Generally they do, they get a kind of thousand-yard-stare and look "constipated". I know that sounds anthropomorphic, but its that kind of stiffness and distractedness that everyone seems to be able to recognize for some reason. And the females usually stay that way for a few minutes after the egg is laid as well.
If she is in labor, it looks exhausting and maybe quite painful for her. Will it ever end? The poor girl, she must be wondering if it is all worth it.
At least she's not leaving the nestbox . Do birds experience "labour" when they're about to lay an egg? Could it be that the contractions (they must have contractions of some kind ) could have stopped for awhile..and she's resting up for the real thing?
