Amazing how fast that shade moves across the ledge.

a few clouds here downtown, but the sun is still shining. The ledge is starting to shade over, won't be long now till it cools off for them.

I've never seen one of the parents hang around so long with the chicks (well, not once they're past the constant care stage), but Princess is sticking right with them today. She looks more comfortable now at least. Should be meal time soon . . .

It looks like a few clouds have come in which is probably heaven sent for them.  I remember being in desert conditions and just standing in the shade of a telephone pole the temperature dropped.

Edmonton and Winnipeg have heat.

I believe I see 2 right now sheltering from the sun and adult is on ledge by box.

The sun will go behind the building in the next hour I believe, so they'll be able to sprawl anywhere they like in a bit ...

And it's getting hotter -- sitting at 23 right now, forecasted high is 28. Looks as though one chick convinced Mom to shelter him after all - no, he's moving on -- probably not very cool snuggled up against each other!

Thank you TPC--appreciate the feed back.  You are right, one chick did nudge her wing for some shade and she just closed it up.  That's tough love at its toughest!

Nope, chicks have to find their own shade ... Princess is doing that to keep cool herself - she cools her breast by creating a shady area beneath her body and if possible catching some wind there as well, they don't sweat so they have to (in order of efficiency) a) stay in the shade, b) pant, c) create their own shade and catch some wind ... in this case, Princess is opting for b and c to hang out with the chicks instead of tucking up on the other side of the hotel on the sign (or the nestbox for that matter) ...

Oh my.  It looks like Princess is SWELTERING in that heat, all sprawled out on the ledge.   :(  At least the chicks don't seem to be as bothered by the heat as her, the upside of having white fluff instead of dark feathers I guess!

I am wondering if Princess is there with her wings spread out to offer the chicks some shade ???

It has got to be hot for those birds on the ledge - the parent is just sitting there with its mouth open trying to get some air.  Looks like it is almost ready to pass out with the heat of the sun and that coming up from the traffic below.  I am sure it does not help having a dark body as well.  I still say a wading pool would be a nice idea..... :)

Thanks, TPC! I still struggle with differentiating between the two of them, hadn't noticed the crown feathers -- thought it looked like a white rather than speckled breast. I could just sit and watch -- it's a major pain to have working for a living interfere with peregrine watching. What a rewarding project this must be for you.
