Never seen a heron in the city, but I sure love watching them at the lake!

No falcons, but a bird of a different feather....

I was downtown last night on Carlton Ave. between Graham and St Mary's facing south.  I was looking for the falcons, but didn't see any, but the weather wasn't cooperating either.  I did, however, see something I have never seen in downtown Winnipeg before.  It looked like a blue heron came flying over the Delta Hotel, flew to above the Hydro building, circled 4 or 5 times, and then flew off to the west.  Came from the Red River and then flew west following the Assiniboine River?
You never know what you see in Winnipeg skies when you look up!!!
That must have been so cool. My husband saw on in Gimli last Saturday. He said it was an impressive sight.

Had a peak at the nestbox cam and it looks as though Mother Nature has  been cleaning out the nestbox nicely - with some more dry weather, it will probably dry up the last few prey remains and then they'll blow out of the box.  Too bad Ivy hasn't found is housekeeping genes yet ...

Lucky you! Don't tell TPC (or the other members here) but the Great Blue Heron has been my favourite bird since I was a little girl growing up on Lake of the Woods. There is something prehistoric, almost sacred, about it.

Anyone know any falcon poems?
Cooper, go into the poetry thread, seems to me I created a poem or two about our Radisson pair. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Oh, bccs, our poetess
I've read your poems with glee
I'd wax on here more eloquently
But now I have to pee.

BHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, GREAT BIG LAUGH, WAY TO GO COOPER ;D

I'm a big fan of the blue heron, too, Cooper. When I was growing up about an hour or so north of the city, we used to always see at least one blue heron in the water-filled ditches near Traverse Bay corner (on our way to the beach) -- the ditches are still there, but the herons are much more rare now. Love the piece from the Michael Ondaatje poem -- now I'll have to go looking for the rest of it . . .

The blue heron you saw may well be "my" heron. We have one that has staked out fishing rights on the Assiniboine for years (at about where the Perimeter Hwy crosses the river). It thrills me to see him every time we canoe down that way.

Here's a bit from a poem by Michael Ondaatje that I think describes the heron's flight so perfectly. I think the poem is called "Inner Tube" or something like that - and I can quite imagine floating on the lake in one looking up at the sky and seeing:

"a blue heron
with its awkward
broken backed flap
upside down"

All three juvies present - one sitting on top of the Rogers bldg, and just saw one chase the other off the Rogers sign.

Is there not still 4 juvies?  I take it #4 was just not around.

And as I was talking to Pam, one kiddie, I'm thinking it was a girl, flew right over my head going east toward the river. ;D     Yelling the whole time. ::)
