This is such a good story here so glad it worked out this year, well anyway they have their fledge watch starting soon so must not going to band them

Help us help the young falcons — their first flights are expected soon

The flight training period should begin soon and we need volunteers to help safeguard the young falcons during their first flights. Beginning June 30, we will need volunteers on hand for every daylight hour during the flight training period. You will also help answer questions about the falcons from passersby. No experience is needed. All you will need are a pair of binoculars, leather gloves and a flimsy towel — although we also recommend a water bottle and sunscreen.

If you would like to serve as a member of the 2009 Salt Lake City Peregrine Falcon Watchpost and Rescue Team, please arrange to attend a short training at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29. Meet just east of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building on the northeast corner of where South Temple and Main Street meet in downtown Salt Lake City.

I think these chicks are particularly well fed. During a feeding earlier, both chicks kept wandering off and then wandering back to have a little more food.

Hmmm. Thanks! Very interesting info. I thought Peregrines were considered and designated an endangered species throughout North America. Wonder if George Bush had anything to do with this?!  ;) (LOL)

now that the species has been de-listed.
TPC, What do you mean by this?

A few years ago, the US Government decided that peregrines in the US had recovered sufficiently that they no longer needed protection and the endangered species designation.  So the peregrine was delisted, rather than downlisted - that is it went from endangered to be right off the species-at-risk list with one piece of legislation.  The individual states may protect them as wildlife and may have their own species-at-risk designations, but nationally they are no longer a species of concern.

In Canada at about the same time, nationally the species was downlisted by one category because across the country there had been great increases generally though some of the regional recovery targets hadn't been met.  Because the federal government transferred responsibility for wildlife (along with other natural resources) to the provinces many decades ago, the provinces are still able to designate a species as at risk.  In Manitoba, because we only have two confirmed breeding pairs, they are still designated as endangered in the province.  Reinforcing this designation is that there used to be peregrines nesting in all the major prairie cities - Edmonton, Calgary (Red Deer too I think), Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Brandon and Winnipeg.  Except for last year (and haven't heard anything to the contrary for this year) there have been peregrines nesting in Saskatchewan in a decade or more - they had more pairs than we did, yet they are all gone, without protection and monitoring here, the same could happen here.  So the peregrine continues to be endangered in Manitoba.

That help?

I wonder if they are going to band these 2 they are 29 days old now isn't that a bit old for this to happen now?

Could be a bit dicey if they wait much longer but I'm not sure that its a requirement anymore in the US now that the species has been de-listed.  But don't take that as gospel, I just don't know but that might explain why it hasn't been done yet ...

Part of a feeding from earlier today:

The chick on the right in the pic above took the piece of food towards the back of the nest box:

Dark wing feathers are coming in fast now                           When every scrap of food was gone, Mom left
