 2009: she laid 4 eggs that all hatched and the chicks fledged perfectly and all migrated. (no camera)
 2010:She laid 4 eggs and according to Dan (conservation) 2 eggs disappeared but remaining eggs hatched. (no camera)
 2011:She laid 4 eggs that all hatched but due to torrential rain storms 2 chicks died.(camera)
 2012:She laid 4 eggs that all appeared normal until hatch time three hatched and one didn't hatch, reason unknown.(camera)
 2013:She laid 4 eggs, 3 that appear normal and one that was blighted and discarded.(Camera)
 Now we wait until hatch time and like the Radisson nest hope for good weather.

I'm so sorry for the confusion, I meant the eggs she discarded, one last year and one this year. They both had dents in them, or something that looked like dents to me.  

I checked out the video of the egg being laid and it doesn't look like it was damaged at hatching and it wasn't until hours later that I noticed that there was debris sticking to the egg - it was a few hours after that the "dent" appeared and then the egg was crushed very quickly after that.  From lay to discard was about 30 hours and most of that time, the eggs were on their own, incubation didn't begin until after the egg was discarded so it didn't take much for Hurricane/Brooklyn to crush the egg when they were in the box with it.  And they didn't do it on purpose, they were being their usual careful selves around their eggs.  

So what does this mean?  It may just be that she's a three egg bird or that her system needs more time between egg 1 and 2?  She's healthy and her surviving eggs look great and her previous years' offspring are all fine, so it may just be her unique nesting quirk.  It's also not something we can do anything about so we will be happy with three eggs and hopefully three chicks each year.

Tracy, this makes two years in a row that Hurricane lays an odd shaped egg. Could this have something to do with her small size, smaller than normal? I imagine she would be more uncomfortable too carrying those eggs. 

Hurricanes three eggs look normal to me, they don't look odd shaped.    From looking at Tracy's video's, even the egg she discarded didn't look odd shaped even though it did look collapsed.   

If an egg looks "odd" I think it is just the way it may be sitting in the scrape or the way the light/shadow is lighting it up.  I think by definition, eggs are egg-shaped, and no I'm not being facetious, I mean that is the way they form/have to form during the process of getting from point A to point B before being laid.

What makes you think the egg looks "odd"?  I've been through recent recordings of shift changes and they look fine to me ...

First shift change at 0433h, Brooklyn relieving Hurricane, then Hurricane was back on duty at 0608h and is still there now ... doing a bit of hoovering right now ...

0914: Not a cloud in the sky since 0515 this morning, temp 10 and wind from the east at 19 km/h so far a really beautiful start to the day.

at last update on the system it was 9C with scattered cloud and winds E 18 km/h.  Can't see that much wind in the box at the moment and it sure looks cloudless on the cam inside the nestbox.

May 9 - egg 4 laid @ 0721h

June 4 - Day 27 - start of hatch watch
June 7 - Day 30 = estimated start of hatch

Hurricane looks much less "fluffed up" than she has the last couple of days and she's again sitting in the morning sunshine ... she's looking around a bit so it might be close to shift change or breakfast-to-go delivery ...

We've been lucky the last few years but I guess it was about time for Hurricane's name to catch up with her

Looks quite windy in Brandon this evening. Hurricane's feathers are flapping away. Not sure, actually, if it's Hurricane or Brooklyn on the eggs right now. Which ever bird it is, is facing inward in the nestbox so I can only see her/his tail feathers.
