We've banded here a couple of times and at this same age and we aren't anticipating any problems.  As for catchers, we have had folks stationed but never been tested which is a good thing because I'm not sure how successful folks would be catching a 1+ lb of screaming, taloned peregrine chick at the bottom of a 14 storey drop.  For that reason, we'll be working to keep them on the ledge during the banding, not so difficult once we catch them because we put them in buckets for everyone's safety.  Besides, they've never seen a human, so they don't have a game plan ... yet ...

A couple of active chicks on the ledge this afternoon - can see an improvement with balancing while flapping wings since yesterday.

Looking forward to the 6pm news and hope Mother Nature co-operates tomorrow (I'm just being selfish as I have a couple of appointments on Friday that I can't move  ;) )

I can't see the cam just now, but if you mean the sprawled out face-plant chick pancake thing...

then yes, they do that to keep cool as well as to sleep.  :)  kinda like I do!

The belly-down, sprawled-out puddle of feathers position is completely adorable! But is it just a typical tired-chick thing, or are they doing it to stay cool?

So much to learn--and this forum is such a wonderful resource! Thanks for being so patient with newbie questions.

Tracy actually banded Trey at this very ledge!  so I'm sure she's got a good plan and knows just what to do.  no worries!

(yeah, I'd bet peregrine chicks are a bit feistier than ducklings!)

Hello Tracy.

I noticed your update today that if weather permits tomorrow morning (18 June 2009) you hope to get the little fuzz balls banded. I am not sure if this will be the first time the banding process has been tried at Trey and Princess' current nest site or not, but was wondering if you planned to have a number of "catchers" posted on the ground around the nest site?

The site is a lot closer to the ground than their 'room with a view' was on other years. I thought that being closer to the ground, and related noises, the three little ones might just spook more easily and hurdle that framing wall around their nest site without even realizing it. Their gliding skills at this stage are probably about as good as those of a wet paper towel, so having some people ready to keep them off the concrete might be worth considering.

I saw a chap in Seattle a few weeks back do this with a nest full of ducklings. Shouldn't be much different for peregrines, although I am sure they would be a bit fiestier.

Keep up the great work!

DT

I'm like Holly-Birdeze -- not wanting to miss a minute but looking over my shoulder to make sure nobody's looking over my shoulder! Ah, the difficulties of balancing work with life!

Yes! Thank you to the camera person who zoomed in for some close-up shots of the baby chicks eating a tasty meal this morning!  ;D It happened right as the "Kinderchicklets" were observing the chicks on the digital projector in their classroom - and right in the middle of their filming and interviews with Mr. Mike from CBC-TV. So don't forget to watch for us tonight, on the CBC "News at 6"! The chicks in the nest ledge and the "Kinderchicklets" in their classroom were flexing their wing/arm muscles in unison!!! It was a sight to behold! ;D
