I was wondering if the down coat is shed as the adult feathers grow in or does it become an undercoat?

The chicks have two down coats - one is like their parents and will remain to ask as thermal insulation against days like this.  The other is natal down that is "pushed" out by the flight feathers - and some is shed during preening by the chicks.

How soon do their beaks gain any colour? I haven't seen the chicks in several days (missed banding, too,  :'() and I can't believe how much they've grown and gained in feathers.  The one on the vent, though...I have such a hard time making out his head from his body -- some beak colour would be nice!

The colour doesn't really become like their parents until they are at least a year old ... check out Dennis' photo of Mistral just after fledging ....

its sooooooooo hard to give up the "cool" spot

Nibs - Congratulations on becoming a Chick.  Love your comment - oh the crazy thing we did in our youth to be "cool".

I'm sure they'll cuddle up to stay warm and dry tonight.
