2015 NESTING SEASON

The great Windwhistler, who has been the resident male at this site for so many years, has been displaced. Some time in January, a new male appeared on the nest ledge. It is not known what happened to Windwhistler, but as far as I know there have been no sightings of this iconic tiercel, seventeen years old this year.

Windwhistler's lifetime mate Erin, also seventeen years old this year, is still the resident female at the nest.

The new male is Stormin, one of Windwhistler's grandsons. He is a son of Rhea Mae and Tiago at the Sheraton nest.

Stormin was displaced last year from his previous nest site, which he shared with his mate, Haven.

So far, Erin has shown little or no interest in Stormin. Lately I have seen him bringing her food gifts, and she has been accepting them.

I doubt that there will be eggs this year.I think it would be too much to ask of a seventeen year old falcon who has just recently lost her mate.

I happened to be in Toronto last week, so I detoured to King Street and was able to see the adult on the nest ledge by peering up from street level. So nice to see a falcon "in the wild," rather than over webcam!

I wonder why the adults have left the non-viable eggs in the nest? Maybe because the ledge is so big they don't really notice them anymore?

Still waiting on a hatch here for Erin and Windwhistler. They were only a day or two behind Sheraton so hatch is expected any time now.

2012 NESTING SEASON

Ha..we can finally confirm that Windwhistler (our original bigamous male) is and has been the resident male at King Street for the last decade and ERin is the pefa originally ID's as Mandy was/is still his mate. They are the parents to Tiago who nests next door.

And if that doesn't make your head spin..Quest and Rhea Mae (both daughters to Mariah and Kaver) are paired with Tiago and Kendall who are brothers so 2 sisters nesting with 2 brothers. As the falcon turns takes another twist here in the big smoke!

Similar to MEC, King St now has a live video stream of the Peregrine nest available on Justin.tv. We continue to publish high quality refreshing images to the King St peregrine webcam page. Having the option to watch live video is an additional option for those to can access it.

This is a new configuration, and requires a little more tuning before we get it right.

This latest image, captured this evening shows the female just a the bottome of the camera image. Every year they put they eggs down , just out of camera view. I think with this image with can believe that they are in incubation. Just have to wait for the egg count.

Ok he fixed it - it was the name that threw him off, Majesty is the last surviving (of the last 5 in that hatch) falcon born to Victoria and Pounce-Kingsley at King Street - the first nesting pair in Toronto in over 100 years. UM-Flint has unofficial mascot in 'Maize'
Peregrine falcon family at the new nest site on top of the North Bank Center.

Lynne Ihrig, a systems administrator intermediate for Information Technology Services (ITS) at UM-Flint, was looking out her window on the fifth floor of the North Bank Center at the Durant building, which is kitty-corner to her. She noticed a pair of peregrine falcons and what looked like a possible nest. Ihrig was concerned for the falcons, which have been in the Flint area for quite sometime due to the ongoing construction at the Durant.
“I saw the mother and it looked like she was sitting on a nest,” Ihrig said. “I called the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and they asked me a lot of questions - I passed their test so they sent someone out.”

At first the crews working on the Durant thought they could put off construction as long as young Maize was still in the nest. But they soon realized that time was of the essence to continue with their project, so it was decided that the peregrine falcon’s nest would be moved the 300 feet to the 12th floor of the North Bank Center.

The day of the move came and a unique relationship between the mother, whose name is Majestic, and Ihrig came into play.
“Sometimes, I can sit by the window on the 12th floor, and she will fly over and sit next to the window.” Ihrig said, “She sits there and makes little noises at me, not screeching and not threatening - we just sit.”
When the nest was first moved, it took the mother two hours to finally come over to the nest. So Ihrig thought she would try what normally worked to get Majestic to fly over - she sat at the window. Moments later, Majestic was at the nest with her baby.
Ihrig also was given the honor of naming the baby, since she was the one who first discovered the nest. “They (DNR) allowed me to watch them band her, and then I named her 'Maize.'”
These birds are banded because there are so few in this area. The parents, seven-year-old Majestic was born in Toronto, Canada and 8-year-old Barry was born in Ohio. The peregrine falcon is still on the endangered species list, with only 10 mating pairs in the state of Michigan. The peregrine falcon mates for life, which also makes them unique.

It looks as if a 7 year old Toronto Peregrine Falcon named Majestic, has created a family with an 8 year old Peregrine named Barry from Ohio. The pair had a chick earlier this year, named Maize, who has become a bit of a mascot for Flint, and the local Michigan University according to this Flint Journal article which includes great photos and video.

It is great to hear about Canadian Peregrines moving on to create new families beyond our borders.

I have yet to find details about Majestic’s birthplace or parents in Toronto, but will followup with more details if we find them. Until then, here is a bit more information from the Michigan Times about the banding of Majestic’s chick Maize in the summer of 2009, including a great photo of a Peregrine atop the North Bank Centre.

It's funny but the last 2 months I've been going down to a large market near this nest site and the Sheraton. And every Saturday morning when I go down there I almost get hit by a car because i"m looking up to the skies to see if I can catch a glimpse of one of the falcons down there but I never have.

Well I had a chance to speak to Linda about it - she is the one who looks after this site and she confirmed that the female started heavy incubation immediately after she laid her first egg! She said she had never seen anything like that in all her years of observing nest sites. She thinks it was due to the weather being so cold especially at night and the site being so exposed to the elements that may have prompted this behaviour. That would certainly explain the delay between hatchings.

The good news is they have all done well and fledged successfully, even little Spec.

Karianne reports: - We have had an unfortunate turn of events at one of our nest sites here in Detroit (yes Miriams nest - banded (blk 89/H)). I went to check on the three chicks yesterday and the nest was empty, the chicks were healthy/strong and approximately 10 days old (all three disappeared at the same time). Check this out, they finally got an ID on the King St female for past two years - she was born in 1998!! How awesome is that, she's 11 years old! Great to see the older falcons still thriving and going strong...I'm so happy they band them otherwise we would never know things like this!!

A huge thank you to Carol and Juanita for your help with a history on the Toronto King Street adult female that has been a mystery for two years now. The resident adult female that has been identified at the Toronto King Street nest site is a 1998 hatchling from Froedtert Malt in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her name is ERIN.

Froedtert is now called ADM Milling Company but it was still Froedtert Malt when she hatched & fledged from there in 1998. Her band is indeed black over red *B/*D. Her USWFW purple anodized band is: 1807-69719

June 1, 2009

Mystery solved! We are happy to share with you the identity of the adult female Peregrine falcon currently raising one healthy chick on the Durant Hotel in Flint, Michigan. Her band was read and confirmed as Black 7 over 5, according to the CPF (Canadian Peregrine Foundation) the University of Michigan Flint has welcomed 'Majesty' to their campus! She was born at the 18 King Street nest site in downtown Toronto in 2002. Her parents were non-other than Ponce-Kingsley and Victoria - Toronto's first nesting peregrines on record in 100 years. Majesty was one of five hatchlings produced that year and all of her siblings have been reported dead over the years. Majesty is the last known living legacy of Ponce-Kingsley and Victoria - Mark Nash from the CPF was very excited to hear that she is doing well and has successfully reared young. Majesty was undetected for seven years, and some people wonder why we band?

They are sequential - the coloured bands are made and distributed throughout the country so there are alot each year and each one has to be unique so that we can identify the individual birds - not in a region but right across the continent, hence the use of letters, numbers, horizontal and vertical digits and various colour schemes. The FWS (silver) band also has an unique number for each bird (and for every species!) but they aren't readable except in the hand except in very very exceptional cases.

Nope, just happens that the band numbers were number over X and number over Y. We have a bunch of over Y and over X bands and its just a case of the current point in the numbering ... neat synchronicity however!

We banded 4 Peregrine chicks today. There were 5 eggs,one didnt hatch. Judging from the ages it was egg 4 that didnt hatch. We had

1.Molly 853grams 23 days old 98/x
2.Alpin 603grams 22 days old 32/y
3.Kendall 536grams 24days old 33/y
4.Spec 378grams 15days old 34/y

Spec(Speck) was apptly named as he wasnt much bigger then one!

You are right on TPC. I checked in this morning and the oldest is already wandering down the ledge while 2 of them were laying in front of her under her breast partway and didn't see the thirds so probably under her. Linda posted a shot and what a difference in size between largest and smallest. I hope they do ok too.

TPC is going to be interested to see if the youngest makes it ... it will still be wholly dependent on its parents for thermoregulation while the rest will be on their own. Fledging will also suck for the youngest, particularly if its female - she could be 3 weeks later than her male sibs - hope she has a sister in the bunch to help keep her from trying to follow along too soon! I would watch very closely folks to see if the parents are up to be able to meet the needs of all their chicks.

Number one hatched on the 9th, number two on the 12th, number 3 on possibly the 15th given Alisons pics and number 4 could have been yesterday or last night given how tiny he/she is. So they hatched out across 7 days from eldest to youngest..wow!!

Ok this will go down in the history books..but apparently the other 2 eggs have hatched....!! As posted by Linda a few minutes ago:

Saturday 2:45 feeding time. There are now 4 hatches, and the smallest is very small compared to the eldest sitting beside it. One egg still in view, not sure if this one will be viable

Alison: you probably did see three after all and to have them all hatch like that ...wow .... 1 week between youngest and eldest I think....I wonder....if there was a territorial battle, are all the eggs hers?? And speaking of King St, Mark has just posted that the new male at the Burlington Lift Bridge is a King St born male! This is a son of Windwhistler!

Mark Nash Reports:
With a huge thanks to Bill and Sue for getting the adult male’s band number (Solid Black band 01 over V), we finally have an identity on the new adult male at the Burlington nest site. Its non-other than Sir Adam Beck, produced at the Toronto King street nest site in 2006. Named by one of our sponsors (Ontario Power Generation), banded on June 9th/2006 at 32 days old, weighing in at 650 grams.

Now the focus is on the adult female to get a positive ID on her. She continues to brood her three new hatchlings and making it difficult to get any detailed views of her leg band numbers. we suspect that it is the same female that was photographed earlier in March and in May of this year as having a Black over green band K over 83

King St has a new pair this year as well Bev, no idea who it is yet at all but it's 2 years in a row now that they've had a new pair and I believe there was a territorial dispute a few months ago. I guess this is just a year of changes for us here after having having so many long time pairs we were spoiled and didn't expect the 'stuff' to hit the fan all at once!!

I think the cold weather has been hard on a lot of sites this year. I wonder if this continues if they will start nesting later TPC??? this is unusual for this site.

I would suspect not, that is a huge time in baby peregrine years. At this point the chicks have almost doubled in size and likewise their strength, mobility, coordination - a five day gap is huge when battling for food ...

Finally an update from Linda, still only 2 hatches...

Two hatches at King St. There are still 3 eggs to hatch.

Unfortunately we are experiencing problems with ourweb server and it’s inability to display our web cam images.,or post images to the web site. The problem has been identified and will be addressed as soon as possible. With the assistance of our webmaster and the servers’ IT department, we hope to be back live, tomorrow. Hopefully.

In the mean time, I will do my best to post updates as soon as possible. Photos will be added when we are able to do so.

Well what looked like 2 was only a big 1 chick and since Saturday no other hatches of the remaining 4 eggs. This morning it is around zero and she's sitting with the eggs exposed

Stare down between mum and dad here too, dad comes in to relieve and mum refuses to budge... dad just gave up and left

First egg was laid same day as Residential I believe so I'm on hatch watch here too today...she's out on an open ledge as well..so not a great day for her either. Since she has 5 though, her due date will be later but she seems to be listening to them so I'm keeping an eye on her.

Something behind her, either a piece of eggshell or something that blew onto the ledge...

Linda has confirmed the presence of 4 eggs at King St. The cams are not up yet and no idea of who is there but we'll find out soon!

Sad news at King St., CPF has posted that one of the juvies was found dead on Sunday but they didn't post it until today - it was gwenny and no apparent cause of death listed. They are asking if anyone saw any unusual behaviour...poor little girl

2008 NESTING SEASON

I saw a peregrine this morning at about 9:30 on the top of a condo at Sherbourne and King (northeast corner). I was in the streetcar so I couldn't get a closer look but definitely a peregrine, made my day.
