I was so sad to hear the chick didn't survive despite the efforts of Princess.  :'(

I guess we'll never know why Princess chose this NASTY ledge again after a few good years in the nice dry, sheltered West Nest - Ivy sure was confused about it - even construction noise annoyances would be better than this. Hopefully some sort of screen can be put down on the East so it doesn't happen again...

I am so sorry to read this.  I well remember June 2008, and now this.  Thanks to TPC and everyone else for the updates and information on this sad occasion.

So sad the Chick #1 died.  It was just too small to survive the horrid weather we have had since it hatched.  Too much rain, too much wind and not very warm tempuratures.  Hopefully the remaining eggs are okay.  Tomorrow and Sunday are supposed to be sunny but not too warm...mid teens.

Unfortunately winds are supposed to gust from NE around 60 and die down around midnight. Hope the remaining 2 hold off until morning. Couple of days of rain in forecast for next week.

Princess just got tossed tail over head and she took the eggs and dead chick with her.  She has gathered up the eggs but not the chick.  The white "lumps" against the drain cover are the chick and the remains of the eggshell.

Wind must have changed, the cam is bouncing again - It looks like poor Chick#1 has been nudged aside - over by the drain cover. Or is that something else, as it looks like 2 of them over there - 2 white lumps of something? One of them is behind Princess' tail feathers, can't see it well.  :-\

Had a look at the camera and thought that doesn't look like Ivy and it wasn't ... checked the recorder and Princess hopped back on the eggs and the chick at 1845h.  She looked all dry and ready to get back to business, Ivy made sure she was close by before he relinquished his place.

I hope Princess takes a long break to feed and replenish her stores of energy.
Ivy likely had a good food cache prepared.

How terrible. :'(

Yet, I suppose this makes the fact that they do succeed, more often than not, one of nature's miracles.

I include Princess' tenacity and devotion as part of that miracle.

Good luck Princess and Ivy with the rest of your eggs.

At least she'll get a break, she must be exhausted - the radar shows we're still smack in the middle of a band of rain - supposed to end over night. Can't come soon enough. Hope at least a couple of the eggs are still ok.

With just the eggs, Ivy can help with the incubating in the rain ... it is falling at under 1mm/hour, so not nearly as heavy as for Princess, but he'll get just as wet ... nuts, lied, now it's 1mm/hour and forecast says 1mm this evening and no rain overnight ...

TPC, were you concerned that the newly hatched chick seemed to be lying down so much.
Could s/he have been not strong right from hatching?

It is possible, but just as possible s/he was fine at hatching and it was came after that was the problem.  We estimated hatch was sometime around 0300 or 0330h yesterday, only saw three meals all day and none of them very long in duration and you know how unstable these chicks are after hatch, it's agonizing to see how long and how carefully the adults have to be to feed them.  Might have had a meal maybe two during the night (Ivy is regularly active after dark) but then nothing (or nothing I saw) after 0500h this morning.  So, entirely possible.
