Radisson - 2013 / Ivy & Princess

Maybe a whole group of falcon phanatics could get a big tall ladder, get to the top, then stand on each other's shoulders to throw you, and Bob the bander up to the ledge to do your business...?  Too bad a fire truck ladder couldn't reach that high...at least that wouldn't be a huge cost?! 

At one time Allikat there was a truck that could get us that high, it was an odd experience, well, odder than going up the lift which has its own oddness to it.  But unfortunately, it isn't available anymore. 

And I'm hoping to keep Bob happy banding peregrines for a few years to come so no "tossing" Dr Bob anywhere!!! 

You sure?!  Just need a little muscle to make it happen...

Do you have any kind of a "guestimate" as to when either of these 2 chicks might fledge, TPC?

earliest = 10 days
hopefully = 14+ days

Chronology for this morning ...

• 0100h - at least 1 chick, if not both, wandering about the ledge
• 0311h - o-dark-thirty meal delivery
• 0357h - second course delivered followed by a chick coma & Princess on-guard on the ledge edge
• 0515h - chicks have moved to sleep at Princess' feet
• 0526h - Princess feeds chicks remains from 0311h delivery
• 0531h - Princess leaves, chicks wander, watch and sprawl
• 0709h - Princess returns
• 0744h - larger chick wingercizing, smaller chick nibbling on Princess' "toes"
• 0746h - Princess leaves (toes hurt?)
• 0900h - chicks finally settle for a nap
• 0926h - Princess returns with food - larger chick eats right away, smaller chick thinks about it, then gets up and joins in
• 1017h - Princess returns, chicks remain in post-food-coma in their chosen spots

Weather for today/tonight ...

Day - Partly cloudy in the morning, then overcast with a chance of rain. High of 24C. Windy. Winds from the WNW at 20 to 30 km/h. Chance of rain 40%.
Night - Partly cloudy with a chance of rain. Low of 15C. Breezy. Winds from the NW at 15 to 20 km/h. Chance of rain 60%.

Nice thing about the chicks not being banded  ------   NO TRANSMITTERS     

Not an issue actually.  Because they were going to be moved to the nestbox they were going to be excluded from the transmitter project as we can't retrieve them safely when they are old enough to have a transmitter fitted.  Downside is that not only can't they be tracked for the first couple of years by satellite, but we won't be able to track them at all without band numbers.  

Having said that, if they are grounded after fledging and if they are re-releaseable, they will get bands and they will become candidates for a transmitter.  We tend to have more groundings from the ledge than from the nestbox but still we'll just have to see.  I'd prefer a boring fledgewatch with no groundings, but a soft, injury-free grounding even if it means being re-released with legbands and perhaps a transmitter runs a close second.  I'm afraid I don't look forward to fledges from the ledge anymore.

We've been waiting for some equipment to arrive so that we can retrieve the chicks from the nestledge in order to band them and relocate them to the nestbox. 

What kind of equipment are you waiting for?   Are you not using the same company that you used the last time you had to up to the east ledge? 

We are waiting for the lines/ropes - they are a special order from the US and it was thought they would arrive last week but well, that's why it's called Murphy's Law.  Mostly we can over-engineer our plans just in case Murphy decides to participate, but sometimes it's just not enough.  In thirty years, we've only had 4 other chicks we couldn't band - all were because we couldn't access the nests safely.  We did band chicks from each of these nests however when they were grounded after fledging so though I would prefer the Radisson chicks fledge without incident, if they do go down and are re-releaseable (not a guarantee) then we'll band them then.

Correct  me if I'm wrong please, was a swing stage, like the one used in 2009 not considered? I know that it is expensive, but I'm sure that donations would have flooded it if that were the case
