I checked the website tonight and seems the Panda Bear in Atlanta is indeed pregnant. When there is nothing else to watch I watch Panda Bears :)
http://www.zooatlanta.org/animals_giant_panda_cub_updates.htm
-
Whoohoo! Panda Lun Lun has just given birth ;D
-
Yes I just learned that YIPEEEEEEEE! Now another kid to watch grow :)
-
Okay I know nothing about Pandas except that they are really, really cute so I went to check out the links and so glad I did - thanks to both of you! The little baby is sooooooooo tiny!!
-
Just missed the excitement! I checked the cam last night, a few minutes after the birth. Couldn't tell what Lun Lun was doing, but from the pics this morning, she was holding the cub. As they say, timing is everything. If only I'd checked ten minutes earlier!
-
Apparently there were a few questionable moments after paying close attention to Lun Lun and her new baby "boy" cub! The veterinarians decided after watching the behavior of the cub to put the newborn in an incubator to monitor him! So far good news!! The mother and cub have been re-introduced in the den, however the specialists will continue to monitor and observe their behavior for the safety of the newborn cub as well as the mother! In case anyone missed the live birth, go to:
www.zooatlanta.org/animals_videos.htm (it's the Giant Panda Birth 2008)
It's an absolutely beautiful experience!!!! A must see!
P.S. Turn the volume down before as Giant Pandas vocals are loud!
-
Awww..I just checked the progress of the little cub and they've got a picture of him posted today..what a little cutie!! He's gaining weight and doing well!
-
The cub is continuing to gain weight and appears healthy. Hopefully this means that Zoo Atlanta will feel comfortable enough soon to put the webcam back on a view of Lun Lun and the little guy. There is a new picture that you can see in the panda cub photo gallery page. Very cute. The black eye patches and ears are becoming noticeable. He already has long sharp bear claws. If anyone is wondering why he is a pink colour and the previous cub, Mei Lan, looked white at this stage, it is because Lun Lun has been eating what they call leaf eater biscuits that are a bright pink colour. When she licks the cub the result is a pink cubbie. Panda moms normally don't eat for many days after the birth so the pink doesn't normally appear until later and isn't usually this noticeable. They usually have pink at the back of their neck where mom is picking them up in her mouth. The cub isn't mobile and will rarely be visible so we aren't missing out on too much at this stage. The real fun starts when they are a few months old and mobile. Something to look forward to. ;D
-
Oh yes, some looking forward to is the right word, once they become mobile things get so much more interesting. They are a lot of fun to watch. Looking forward to that day. But for now we will just have to wait until the staff feels they are out of the woods for the little fellow before we start seeing him on the webcam.
-
Wonderful news. I was lucky enough to see the little guy 3 times today when I checked in. Once getting a bath from mom, once on the hay, and once tucked up under mom's chin and squirming around. ;D ;D ;D Someone once described the panda mom as having to parent wearing oven mitts and I have to say that every time I see the huge mom trying to move around her very tiny offspring I think about that.
-
The panda cub is doing great, it's in the hay at the moment. It's black and white coloring has now over taken it's pink colour. Looks some cute. Mom is back and holding him so you can't see the little guy oh well it was nice while it lasted lol
-
Lun Lun is nursing the cub now!! This is the second time today I've managed to catch it! I have to say it's beautiful to see how a bear so large in size can be so gentle with it's teeny tiny baby...quite amazing!
-
Very amazing isn't it. I've seen this little guy go from pink to bright white and black. Lun Lun is a wonderful mum!
-

Yes she is! I went back and looked through the history of Mei Lan too and I can't wait til this little guy starts getting a bit bigger so we can see more of him. They are wonderful!! when I was little my first teddy was a panda ;D ;D
-
It is quite something to watch these little fellows grow into big fellows. I started watching when Mei lan was like a month or so old. Another couple of webcams of pandas are:
http://www.sandiegozoo.org/zoo/ex_panda_station.html
http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/GiantPandas/default.cfm?cam=LP2
Hope you enjoy the panda bears, the first webcam is from San Diego the second webcam is from Washington, D.C.
-
Just went on line and Mom had left the baby exposed for about 10 minutes. It already looks like a fat little mini-panda complete with fur and markings. The change is amazing, much like when the Peregrine chicks suddenly blow great huge feathers through their downy fluff! This website has been great to watch and has almost cured my Peregrine withdrawal.
-
Awww, Panda chewing on a box! why is that cute? I don't know. but it is. ;D
-
When my grandson was here I showed him the video of the birth . Was he ever memorized. Besides the raptors, these are my next favorite. I watched Mei lin being born and followed all of her 2 years as to date. Lun Lun is a terrific mother.
what a joy they are to watch.
-
Yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!! The little guy is certainly getting bigger, you can notice it in how mum handles him when she sleeps, he sleeps on the floor or her arm now it seems.
-
Mr. Cuteness sure is starting to get wound up at times. He's gone around in a circle in less than a minute. lol
-
Just saw Lun Lun wander in, pick up the cub, drag him over to where she wanted to sit, then sat down, gently holding him upside down.
-
There is a great website that has a forum for the panda family. It is 475 pages long now..it starts on page 1 with the birth of Mei Lan and her development and now of course with little BBB (baby butter ball). They post screen shots and short videos of the panda's throughout the day so if you don't get a chance to see them ..you can catch up. It took me a few weeks to go through the entire log but it's well worth it if you love the pandas and now I'm addicted..hehe.
It's the Hancock Wildlife website and it's where I went to catch up on the BC eagles and just happened to stumble upon the panda link. Here it is if anyone is interested..there is a video of BBB doing the circles earlier today..too adorable!!!
http://discuss.hancockwildlifechannel.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=267&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=11850
I've linked it to the last page..the most current but if you want to see Mei Lan's life, you can start on page 1..it's quite informative!
-
Thanks for the link to the Panda Blog. The screen caps are great.
The San Diego Zoo has a very informative blog and the monitors have been great about letting people talk about the pandas at other locations
-
Little BBB seems to have his front legs under control, but those back ones just don't want to cooperate! either that or he is so rotund that his little legs don't reach the floor. He's just spent at least 10 minutes going in a circle before stopping for a nap. Hard work being a baby. ;D
-
I know, poor little bear - he tries so hard :-* I can't wait until he starts scooting !
-
Little cubbie is having an adventure in the bamboo forest today. Lun Lun decided to take him on an outing to the den where her bamboo is. It is nervewracking when she does this, however also fun to watch ;D
-
Our young fellow is sure trying to get somewhere today, he was wishing his back legs would work I think.
-
The little guy was very active yesterday too. At one point when he was in the L shaped den with the smooth floor, he spent a long time trying to make some forward progress and pretty much just went in a circle. He tried sooo hard!
I guess that I am going to have to stop calling him butterball soon. Has anyone voted on his name yet?
-
I voted for a name as well, I chose Li Lan if memory serves me correctly. I thought it rhymed with Mei Lan..hehe..brother and sister ;)
Seriously he's the cutest little panda bear ever!! I just melt everytime I see him. It's amazing how you can watch him sleep for so long and think it's exciting :-*
-
My timing is definitely off. All I've seen him do for the last few days is sleep - or else he's getting his bath. He doesn't seem to be wriggling around so much now in his sleep. Or maybe I'm just not watching at the right time.
-
Just not catching it at the right time. Pandas do sleep alot and the little ones really sleep alot.

At this age it is difficult to catch them doing much more than sleeping. That is why the Hancock forum that Carly found is such a find. There are people who are monitoring and capturing images and video for us all to enjoy. Here is the link to the most recent page.
http://discuss.hancockwildlifechannel.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=267&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&sid=21971e784c3835045ed58518b5fdb267&start=12250
This is the sixth American born cub that I have watched on the cams from San Diego, Washington's National Zoo, and Atlanta. These zoos try to mimic nature as much as possible and leave the cubs with their moms until the natural weaning age of approximately 18 months so you have many more months of opportunity. The cubs are really fun to watch when they are a couple of months older and mobile. There used to be some wonderful videos on You Tube of Lun and cubbie's older sister Mei Lan and the antics they got up to. Unfortunately most of them have been removed, I think because they used copyrighted music. It is still worth looking on You Tube. The San Diego Zoo also has some great videos of Zhen Zhen at the different stages in her development. I am sure that you would love them. ;D
As you can see there is the potential to burn up a whole lot of time watching pandas and peregrines so I try to just check in briefly and then use other sources to catch up on what I might have missed. Sometimes that requires more discipline than I possess. ;D ;D
-
BB was standing up and nursing this morning , so precious :) Mama had her little paws around him to support him, it was just too adorable!
-
BB got his name today..it is Xi Lan. He is 100 days old and slept through the entire naming ceremony ::)
-
Yeppers he got named Xi Lan. And yeah Carly he couldn't have cared less sleepying through it all lol
-
OMG!! Lun has taken BB out into the viewing room already!!!! She dragged him all over the room, up on the hammock stand - I almost had a heart attack as he was hanging from her mouth up there!!
Then she nursed him by the window and now he's taking his first steps on the ground..woohoo..no slippery floor!!!
-
Baby bear is napping ... always catch him napping. Other than peregrine chicks, pandas are the cutest nappers ;)

Wow! I am so glad that I wasn't watching the webcam that day :o I think that I would have had a heart attack. Here is a video on YouTube for anyone else who missed all the action. No napping going on this time. Enjoy

-
My God, the little fellow sure endured a lot of abuse! I hope he is o.k. after all that dragging around; he is so young, and I don't know if he has to strength to endure such manhandling. When I was in Kenya this summer on Safari, I saw a mother cheetan pick up her cub by the leg, instead of the scruff of his neck, when she was in a hurry and was agitated, and we were not able to see if he was o.k. after this. I think it is possible, too, for the parents to harm their young, but I would expect that in the case of the pandas, the staff would interfere before anything awful happened.
-
The cub looks uncomfortable in his mother's mouth but really he's strong. Wait til he starts climbing the structures. You think he would get hurt but they just keep on going. The staff would intervene if the cub was in danger. But really he's just fine.
-
Though I missed the big adventure, I wouldn't be too too concerned about Baby Bear, he's close to 4 months old and so he's pretty tough. Also seems, from what I have seen, (and yes, have seen him/them non-napping though not often) Mom has a pretty soft mouth when it comes to moving him about. He's bigger now so not so easy for her to move around. Was watching "Pandemonium" on Animal Planet a couple of nights ago and had different camera angles and saw what sounds like the same kind of behaviour. It looked kinda nerve-wracking but normal. Cub was fine, actually had a ball on the tree once Mom got him up there ... little bit later he was knocking himself silly trying to get back up there and the tree branch was only 3-4 feet above the ground! Fun to watch him try though!
-
Mom and the Xi lan are out in the main exhibit this morning, yipeeeeee and the baby is walking!!!!!!
-
Woohoo! I finally got to see the little one walking. Not bad, once he got his paws coordinated and all headed in the same direction. Walked a nice straight line, too. (Helps if you're beside a wall). He was just contemplating which way to turn when Mom came along and hauled him off. By the flailing of the legs, he wasn't exactly thrilled at first, but then settled down. Hard to think we soon might not be able to see the action.
-
Mom also dropped the BeBe from the top of that beam; poor little guy - thankfully he wasn't hurt but that's a long fall for someone that tiny.
Fortunately the keepers have shut the entrance now that Lun has brought him inside again.
It doesn't look like the zoo is going to continue the panda cam as they haven't said anything and there are only a few more days left. That being said part of me has a hard time watching animals in cells - much as I love seeing them. The other zoos with Panda's have nicer outdoor areas with rocks, water, and lots of trees for them to climb. I can understand why Lun gets crazy sometimes - must be hard to be cooped up in such a small space when you are meant to walk miles a day in the wilderness.
-
Yeah I saw that Carly, but they are tough little guys and it's amazing what they can survive!!
-
Little monkey has recovered well from his fall of yesterday. Apparently he was out on display today in the dayroom and one of the zoo members was there to see it and has posted some pictures of Xi and all the Yangs and 2 of which are mini videos:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/58141177@N00/sets/72157611742369912/detail/
What a nice treat!
-
Great to see that the hammock has been re-intalled in the day room and that Lun has stashed her little cubbie in there while she eats her boo. Xi Lan looks very comfy. Let's hope that some sponsor comes to the rescue of the webcam so that we can continue to watch his development.
On the good news side, the San Diego Zoo announced this month that a new loan extension has been negotiated with China for the four pandas there. The charismatic little Zhen Zhen will be weaned in the coming months and therefore there is hope that the wonderful panda mom Bai Yun will have a fifth cub this summer with the little studmuffin Gao Gao.
-
Oops..forget to say thanks Maggie for sharing the news about the San Diego Pandas staying on another 5 years - heh I was so excited about the panda cam I just hit post and went back to watching Xi Lan and Lun.
Between peregrines and pandas...I can see I will have no life this year.. ;D
-
Still no word on extending the cam however with it being the holidays they expect it won't be until next week if it happens. The Zoo hasn't said anything so I'm assuming today is the last day to enjoy our panda cam for awhile - unless they surprise at the last minute - so enjoying the little guy while you can!
-
Just checked again and the girl heard back from the Zoo - if they resign it will be early next week so there will be no cam after today until then!
Lun is dragging BeBe everywhere this morning..she had to pull him off a log ..lol..he didn't want to go :D ;D
-
It is the afternoon of the last day of the webcam in Atlanta and the cub is keeping me entertained. He's been chewing on bamboo leaves. rolling on the floor, scratching, doing all the bear cubs things. He's soooooo cute. I will miss this webcam for sure.
-
Me too Eagle, he's just the sweetest. They all are - did you see Mei Lan yesterday jumping in and out of the hammock - she was so happy to have it back! The Zoo has updated their website with details about them negotiating with sponsors for the cam and they are optomistic so hopefully they will be back sooner than later!
-
Omg yes I saw Mei Lan running and jumping about, it was such a delight to watch her. And yes let's hope the sponsorship comes through!
-
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/world/2009/01/12/vause.china.panda.attack.cnn
Maybe he tasted like stringy bamboo? ;D
-
*sigh* Pandas are not cuddle toys, there are bears with powerful jaws. Alot of the ones in China have also been rescued from the wild and then put into zoos so they aren't as used to humans as much as the captive raised ones are. I really hope they don't punish the poor bear in any way :-[
-
Not the bears fault. he didn't order any food to be delivered.. ( chinese take-out or otherwise ;)) any dumb-a$$ who jumps in with a 'wild' animal deserves what he gets. I saw pictures of the 'attack' and the enclosure, and its not a very far jump down into the pen.
Poor bear has been punished enough. Probably took POUNDS of bamboo to wash the taste of dumb-a$$ out of his mouth !
lol
-
Nothing is going to happen to Gu-Gu apparently - and nor should it. And the zoo isn't making any changes to the enclosure - nor should they. The enclosure works to keep the bears from roaming into danger but no exclosure will keep humans out if they are a) so inclined, b) foolish, or c) inebriated.
Interestingly, this young man is the only one of the three people who have been bitten by pandas at the zoo in 50 years whose presence in the pen was accidental (the others climbed) and yet there is still the possibility that he could be charged by the police. Figure the nerve and tendon damage and the resultant publicity/notoriety is probably enough in this case. And Gu-Gu apparently is unfazed by the whole incident.
Everyone was pretty lucky all told ...
-

ROTFL!! ;D
-

some boys are dumb.. lol.. notice its never a WOMAN who feels the need to cuddle up to the poo-bears.. lol
The zoo does not need to alter the enclosure in any way.. it's actually well done, and what i meant by the comment that it was not far down in was that you could get up close and personal with the bears WITHOUT getting TOO up close and personal.. you have a wonderful view of them from just above them.
I think he should be charged with something. If was easy to 'accidently' fall in , then it would happen more often.. everyone has to be responsible for their own actions... and it needs to be an example for others to maybe think twice before climbing in for a hug..
again..poor bear... needed to go clean his teeth with bamboo to get the dumb-a$$ out of his teeth...
-
Still no word on the return of the panda cam however one of the ladies has been going to the zoo on weekends and she's posted some awesome pictures/videos of the Yang family including little Xi Lan. He's walking so well and he is even trotting in one of the videos..he's gotten so big!!
Here's the link to her flickr site if you need a panda fix...to hold you over. Some excellent pics, I love the shots of daddy Yang..he's quite the goofball..hehe! Enjoy!

-
Wasn't there someone not long ago who climbed into a panda enclosure because he had always wanted to hug or pet a panda? Got bitten on arms and legs for his trouble. Can't remember where I read it........
-
I think Darwin had something to say about this...survival of the fittest or smartest or least inebriated or something like that.
-
Still no webcam, however here is a fun video of Xi Lan climbing into the water drinker ;D Guaranteed to bring a smile to your day ;D ;D ;D

Rumour has it ...that panda cam will be back up early next week, keep your paws crossed and keep checking the Atlanta web site :P
Maggie: That video is great, I watched it over and over and over! I have been all over flickr and there are tons of pictures and videos from people that have been visiting the pandas weekly to keep us updated on Xi Lan's antics..can't wait to see his cute little face again on the cam!
-

Yeah! Thanks for the news Carly. That will be a great Valentine's gift.
In the meantime I have been checking in on the National Zoo and San Diego pandacams. If you haven't seen the news, Mei Xiang surprised everyone by going into estrus in early January. There is a video update on what happened and the AI procedure. Mei was a wonderful mother to Tai Shan so paws crossed that she has a cub this year after several pseudopregnancies.
There has also been a lot of activity in San Diego as the weaning process is underway for Zhen Zhen. This will probably be the last week to see Mom Bai Yun and her cub together. Zhen has been a very independent little cub but this morning seemed a little agitated that she couldn't find a way to open the door separating her from mom. Here is the cam link for anyone who hasn't watched them.

This one is cute too, has sound so be ready - people chatting. I love the way he tries to resist mama with his little paws..hehe...mama wins this one!

Heh..Maggie, I've been watching Zhen & Bhai as well and Tai also. I'm addicted to pandas now. Between pandas and peregrines, I don't know how I'm ever going to get anything else done..lol ;D
-
I think that all of us pandaholics will be in big trouble if there are cubs this spring to compete with the peregrines for attention. ::)
I don't usually watch the Memphis zoo pandacam but I might have to add that one to the list too. The zoo waited all spring, summer and fall for the young female to go into estrus. Keepers reported that it fimally happened at Christmas. No reports so far to tell us if there is a chance of a cub there.
-

I know!! First Yaya, then Mei with the early estrus and you just know that Bai will get pregnant again given Gao's track record!! It's going to be a busy Spring!!! I do hope that yaya and mei are both pregnant tho, from what I read yaya lost a fetus last year (but she is still young by panda standards) and mei hasn't had any luck since Tai was born. It's going to be Pandamonium and Phanatic city!!
-
New pics from yesterday of Xi Lan - she's still uploading so keep refreshing and there are a few pages of em..guaranteed to melt even a phanatic's heart!

No exact date yet...BUT...click on link and earthlink (they are the sponsor) now has a 'coming soon Atlanta Panda Cam' message....!!!
http://www.earthcam.com/newsletter/2009/02/
-
Sounds pretty promising yipeeeeee!!!!!!!!!
Someone emailed Earthlink about it..lol..and they replied back that they are finalizing the details now and should be online soon! Now what their definition of 'soon' is - I don't know but the fact that they acknowledged it means it's a go!
-
*sigh* still no sign of a return of the panda cam. On the plus side for the zoo, since they killed the cam - thousands have been flocking to see the little guy so it's good for them but not so good for us. :'( :'(
-
If you have never seen pandas playing in the snow go to these links and see Rox's videos of Tian and Mei at the National Zoo..oh my god, you will laugh out loud - they are like little kids playing!

Look at this face Loriann..how could you not love him and want to post like crazy!! Current photos/videos of our X-Man from Auntie B2C:

Go to Page 2 and see the Mommie and Son photo, it will melt your heart :-*
-
yup he's a cutie all right.. ( do not try to hug the bears).. lol
I visit this site ( lurker alert).. how could you not love all of them? :-*
-
The pandas SDZ (San Diego Zoo), the only 'naturally' mating panda pair in North America are getting ready to mate! If anyone is interested in that type of thing... They've opened the 'howdy' door between Bai and Gao and they are getting reacqainted right now..looks like mating may occur at any time. Their success rate is 3 for 3 so far, so look for a cub later on this year ;D
http://www.sandiegozoo.org/pandacam/index.html
-
You can tell where my head is at. I read "nesting pair", not "mating pair"!
-
Same principal, the pandas just have a bigger nest ;D
-
So Carly, the pandas should cheer you up. Apparently San Diego will have a video available shortly ;) Sounds like there could be another cub in their future. :-*
-
Yes, two mating sessions so far - Gao is living up to his reputation!! I'm thrilled!! They're 3 for 3 so no doubts at all there!!
I am hoping that Mei from National Zoo may be preggers too, she has failed the past 2 years but she is glowing lately so I'm optimistic!! Then I can spend the winter watching panda babies!
peregrines and pandas...it doesn't get any better really ;D
-
I have watched Zhen Zhen grow up on the pandacam from the SDZoo. I have also been reading the blogs.
Having mated twice in 24 hours, we now have to wait and see if Bai Yun, mama bear, will be pregnant for a 4th time.
There are videos on the site where you can see little ZZ growing up! Blogs are also available with lots of interesting facts and happenings.
I think I was watching Peregrines before Pandas but one doesn't exclude the other!
-
Xi Lan is playing on Lani's old yellow car on the panda cam...he's adorable!!! :D
-
The funniest 9 minute video of Xi Lan and Mommy Monster wrestling and play fighting over and under a yellow car! The kids commentary in the background is hilarious as they chant Go Baby...and cheer the little guy on!
The video is called appropriately: Go Baby, Go Baby
http://www.youtube.com/user/lcnessie15
-
LOL ;D ;D ;D Wonderful to hear those kids laughing and cheering him on. What a show! Good thing little pandas are tough.
-
Mei Xiang at the National Zoo has built herself a huge nest and is close to the end of either her pregnancy or pseudo pregnancy. It almost looks like a huge bird's nest. ;)
http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/GiantPandas/default.cfm?cam=LP1
-
Yes I've been watching her this week Maggie, she's been cradling her toy and her food like it's a cub! She's also been scratching at the walls and trying to climb the bars as well. I hope she has a cub this time..!
-
I just watched the video of the mom and her little cub, at the Atlanta Zoo.
I don't remember Bai Yun, from San Diego, every being this rough with one of her cubs!
It seems as if the mother at Atlanta, resists her cub climbing up...
Anyone have any answers? ???
-
Well Bai Yun is a more experienced panda mom and I've only seen her with the girls not with her male cub Mei Sheng. From everything I have read and what the moderators at the zoo have said - the moms are rougher with the males than the females.
Their play behaviour is actually training for him - she is teaching him skills he would need in the wild to defend himself. She would never hurt him and in fact she will frequently check on him if he takes a tumble to make sure he is okay. She also loves to sleep in the hammock with him cuddled up next to her, really she is a big softie when it comes to her cubs ;)
The male panda in the wild would be isolated whereas the female will have cubs to keep her company during her lifetime. In the wild, the males would compete with each other for a female during breeding season - he would have to know how to fight and defend himself..so this is all to prepare him for his life an adult. In fact several years ago they released a panda back to the wild and he was killed because he wasn't properly prepared to defend himself in the wild. Even though these pandas are in zoos, the plan is eventually to prepare future generations for release to the wild so they have to be strong or they will not stand a chance.
Xi Lan is monitored 24/7 and if they ever thought he was in danger - they would intervene. Lun was a bit rought at times with Lani but she has grown into a beautiful young lady panda and she will no doubt herself be a great mum some day and pass on the skills Lun taught her to her offspring. And from what I've read Mei was just as rough with Tai Shan and he's also turned out to a beautiful panda adult ;)
-
I should also mention that Lun Lun was taken from her own mother at the age of 4 months whereas Bai was with her mom for 13 months. In the US they allow the cubs to stay with their moms for 18 months as scientists here felt that the cubs being taken away at such a young age were missing out on being taught very important social skills by their mothers.
In the wild cubs would stay with their mothers anywhere from 18 months to 2.5 years before they were weaned. Lun Lun may be more protective of her cubs as a result of that. No doubt as she raises more cubs successfully she will relax more. They say Bai Yun was way more relaxed with Zhen Zhen than with her other 3 cubs.
As TPC always likes to say experience makes a difference and I expect that applies across all species as it does in humans ;)

On a totally different topic, Mei Xiang has been in her nest den all day sleeping and cradling her ball like a cub on and off. She's slowed down alot again the past few days...she's almost in a stupor today!
-
Our beautiful Mei Xiang is not pregnant after all, she is experiencing a pseudo pregnancy. Poor girl, all that suffering and she doesn't even get a cub to cuddle. Nature sometimes has a strange sense of humour :-\
-
Encouraging news from San Diego Zoo...Bai Yun may be pregnant!! She's four for four now so I'm guessing in a few weeks there will be a new cubbie at the zoo!!
http://www.sandiegozoo.org/wordpress/default/denning-up/
-
The SD zoo seems to have put put a short video of how they got the pandas to get in the family way using a couple of zoo employees dressed as pandas. It is too cute and for the most part fairly tame. It is posted on YouTube under "sexy pandas"
-
that was pretty cute .... :D
-
Bai Yun is pregnant...with Twins!!! May only have 1 though, but both viwed on ultra sound:
http://www.sandiegozoo.org/wordpress/
-
Woooooooowieeee!! Never thought I'd hear Bai Yun is pregnant with twins. Sounds like Panda's really only care for one bear if twins are born. Will have to wait and see on this one.
-
This looks like a great cam -- I've just finally had a chance to check it out for the first time, after reading the thread hooked me into the story of Bai Yun and the others. I see that the cam on the site is the den one -- is the cam changed regularly to view the others?
-
Yes it is but since birth is imminent it will stay on the den for now I think. If they hear her in labour they will switch out to the kids as they don't show the birth live in case something goes wrong. The audio is not turned on for us but the keepers there can hear inside the den. Last time they posted the ultra sound results..she gave birth within 3 days so stay tuned...
-
I had no idea that birth is imminent -- of course it makes sense that they would keep the cam on her for now. Thanks, Carly, for the info; it's so much more rewarding to watch when you actually have some knowledge of what's happening.
-
The New York Post called Bai Yun...the Angelina Jolie of Pandas...I LMAO at that. ;D
-
They did post the very interesting video last time. I assume it was after the event. I couldn't believe how small and noisy the Panda baby was.
-
Or how much noise Mom made when giving birth to such a tiny baby!
-

Yes they will post a video of the birth once it's done and if there were no issues. I think it's because the panda babies used to die so frequently before and sometimes if they have twins, the smaller one can die within minutes or birthing or the mom will reject it and they have to get in there and grab it right away and run for the incubator...given they are only 4 ounces at birth...they don't have much time to help it. Bai is also 17 years old which is up there for a panda and they are concerned about that. She's in good shape though and she's an awesome mom!
Interestingly Bai Yun was the first panda to be born in captivity that survived, she was a twin but her twin died a few days after birth. Up until her, the mortality rate was 90% for panda cubs so they've come a long, long way. This is the third time she's been pregnant with twins but she has never given birth to two. Her first daughter Hua Mei who is in China now has successfully given birth to 3 sets of twins and just had a single one a few weeks ago.
-
Carly, you're so informed -- and informative -- about the pandas. Has this been an interest of yours for a long time? I think it's fantastic to read your posts because I know little about them although I did stand for over an hour, fascinated, watching them when two of them visited the zoo in Winnipeg a number of years ago.
-
I've been into them for only about a year now but I"m a reader, old History major so I love to read large volumes of stuff and I always need to know details!
You are so lucky to have seen some in person, I would love to! They are such beautiful bears and they have wonderful personalities..each unique in their own way I've noticed.
They are zooming in on Bai Yun alot at the moment, she's been hunched over for awhile now. I wonder if something is about to happen...or she's just sleeping funny. I've seen her fall asleep in some strange positions that a don't look very comfortable..lol!
-
What fun to have fellow panda cam phanatics!
I've been hooked since ZZ's birth, two years ago.
The SDZ is great about having videos of all the great panda moments. There is a video of the ultrasound done on Bai Yun, yesterday. Their blogs are so informative: specialists, keepers and vets all take a turn.
Also, every check done on the baby was set up as a video for the first few months. I am hoping they will repeat this with the coming birth.
They also have videos of happenings througout the zoo.
Just a little add-on, Mei Sheng, Bai Yun's second cub, mated in China last year. He is quite young but very willing. He was the first panda, born naturally outside of China. He was returned at 4 years old. This is part of the signed agreements between China and all the zoos that have pandas on loan.
Her first cub, Hua Mei was conceived through artificial insemination with Shi Shi, who passed away last year in China. He had been on loan to the SDZ.
Since Gao Gao has arrived, all the other cubs were conceived naturally.
Bai Yun raises great cubs!
Have fun!
-
They've flipped the cam to Su Lin now, she's up in a tree as always..lol. I wonder if this means something is happening or they are just giving everyone a break from staring at Bai.
I agree Moka, SDZ is a great site and very informative! I love ZZ as well, watching the weaning process with her and Bai was my first time and it was hard to watch.
Oh..they are back to Bai again...
-
Now, that, looks like one VERY comfy panda. LOL
-
oooooohhh, this is so exciting!!!
I watched a birth live last time, right place at the right time 8)
I hope I'll be as lucky this time around! We will watch, wait and see! ;D
-
They've had the cam on the kids since I got home, I wonder if something is going on or she's just napping.
-
I can't watch it anymore...it's offline :(
-
Zhen Zhen was eating supper but now she's gone walkabout...
-
I forgot to mention one very important detail! You can watch the whole day of video cam in time lapse video. If you've missed an important day, you can review it. You have a whole week to select from. I copied the details from that part of the SDZ panda cam website. Happy viewing.
The Daily Panda
Missed your daily dose of Panda Cam? Don't have the time to watch our pandas sleep? Boss expects you to do work? The Daily Panda lets you recap the daily escapades of our famous giant pandas thanks to our Panda Cam time-lapse video. So go ahead, get some work done— we'll keep track of the pandas for you.
Missed a day? Review the past week right here: http://outstream.camzone.com/panda.php?cmd=timelapse
-
Boss expects you to do work?
LOL...that is my work!!! They keep me calm in the midst of all the insanity at work ;D
-
Zhen Zhen was eating supper but now she's gone walkabout...
Is she not the sweetest panna teenager !! I love her and Mei Lan and XI Lan...oh and let's not forget Tai Shan! I will hate when they have to go back to their native land. I wasn't around when Mei Sheng grew up and then left but I did read back through all the archives and saw the photos. I also saw some recent photos of him on flickr posted by a girl who lives over there and she went to visit and got photos of both him and Hua Mei - they look really good and healthy!
My favorite though is Gao Gao...that panda just has the sweetest face in the world. He reminds of a little boy... here is a great photo of him from a few weeks ago I found online rolling in wood chips! Rita has some great photos of all the SDZ pandas and she documented ZZ's weaning too...some of the photos are so touching so be warned...you may need Kleenex if you look at those.

Calling all panda lovers, at 9 pacific time, the sdz is celebrating the birthdays of their two girls.
We are celebrating the birthdays of pandas Su Lin and Zhen Zhen on Monday, August 3. Ice "cakes" will be offered to each panda girl at 9 a.m. Come watch the fun at the Zoo or here on the Panda Cam!
Happy watching!
-
I'm glued to the panda cam!! Bai Yun is all curled up in her birthing den this morning..cant' wait for the b-day parties :-*
-
I also have the Atlanda cam up too...Lun and Xi are having a wrestling match at the moment..he's a handful that boy ;D
-
My goodness. I used to have my screen full of Peregrine cams, now it's Panda cams. It is just so cool to be able to see this stuff in my own home. I am watching all the time. Thanks for telling us about these sites.
:-*
-
Pandas and Peregrines...P&P...it's a good life ;)
-
It's cake time...cam is on Zhen Zhen's cake at the moment..it's pink :-* Oh meanwhile back in the den...Bai is sleeping on her tummy :-\
-
Oh Su's cake is pink too with yellow, blue and green!! It's amazing how they make these ice cakes!! So beautiful!
-
Lol..so much for cake, looks like ZZ prefers her boo!! :D Big sister Su is enjoying her cake though ;D
-
Pandas and Peregrines...P&P...it's a good life ;)
Yes it is, Carly, yes it is! 8)
-
Birth watch is officially on! That means the 24/7 watch has begun now...apparently the fetus has grown considerably and although they can't predict a date...they did say early August which it now is and given Su and ZZ were born yesterday and today 4 and 2 years ago respectively...the time is near!!
http://www.sandiegozoo.org/wordpress/default/pandas-bear-birthdays/#comments
-
This is so exciting, Carly! Thanks for the notification! ;D
-
they had the cam on Bai Yun in the den for awhile and she was almost standing on her head...kinda like the falcons do before they lay an egg :-X and then she started digging in her boo bed and then she started burying herself in it and the cam has now switched to little zhen zhen outside.
-
They are really watching now...I think she might be in labour as I'm typing this!!!
-
This girl is REALLY restless. She's nosing around in the bedding and standing on her head again. She keeps looking down like maybe something is going on down there (underneath her I mean). I hope it all goes well for her.
-
No Bai Yun on cam at all yet today...that might mean she is in labour!!
-
Still no Bai Yun and the moderator is not answering questions. People are saying it's taking longer than the last few times...I hope everything is okay.

Whoo Hoo!! Yay, Bai Yun!! I figured something was happening last night as she was soooo restless and rearranging that nest to beat the band. 8) 8)
-
Excellent...great news! Congratulations to Bai Yun!!!
-
Congratulations Bai Yun! What an amazing mom.
Panda baby to watch grow. Even watching them sleep, their breathing even and regular, is totally relaxing!
The next year will be amazing!
-
The cam is back on Bai now in her den with bebe. They've posted a recording of his crying at birth...sounds like a boy to me!! I'm hoping!
First photo of baby posted on SDZ's facebook site! Or look at it here on the Hancock message board...just scroll down!

wow that is impressive. the baby is sooooooo small,
-
So small - so loud - and so active! Amazing!
-
They've posted the birth video on the SDZ site now!!
-
Bai is sleeping on her side at the moment and you can see a glimpse of the new cub under her chin...so, so tiny. :-*

I just saw the video of the birth...nature is beautiful. :-*

I actually listened to the commentary of that video last night and one of the zoo people said that basically Bai will be in that curled up position for the next three months! :o
-
Yep pretty much, her den is quite tiny - unlike Lun Lun who had a huge cavern to lay in. Apparently Bai's den is made to imitate what she would have in the wild.
-
Congratulationa Bai Yun and Gao Gao!!!!!
-
Haven't caught sight of the cub yet, but Bai Yun looks much more comfortable now than she did several days ago (no big surprise there). It's hard to imagine a cub the size of a stick of butter, and harder still to imagine it tucked safely into the midst of all that panda! Nature is amazing.
-
YAY! :D We just got a glimpse of the wee one tucked under mum's chin. It's sooooo little!
:o :o
-
It's okay to miss out, remember the time lapse video for each day will let you catch up.
Bai is an amazing mother. She nurses the little one, cleans it, keeps it warm and close, sleeps and then starts all over again!
This period is so exacting for the mom that sometimes a tired mama can roll over on her little baby and crush it!
Bai Yun has it all down pat! She is an expert.
-
Bai Yun took a 5 minute break today and gave us a lovely view of the new chubby cubby :D. There are photos and a short video here (scroll down) if you missed it - the cub looks very healthy and well fed :-*

I'm thinking a falcon chick would be MUCH easier to care for than one of those Allikat!!!
-
Thanks so much for the website info.....what a pleasure to see such a "wee" one. Pandas are so cute and cuddly looking. Just to look at!!!!
-
A question. I have tried to find out on the internet but can't seem to find the answer.
Do Giant Panda females stay in the den and not eat until the cub is older? I remember hearing on the birth video that she stays pretty much stays in that position (wrapped around the cub) for the next three months.
I know that polar bears are in their dens without food for three or four months after the birth of cubs. Their cubs are very small and helpless for the first few months until they emerge from the den.
Anyone have a website that I might find the answer? Or does anyone know the answer?
-
Go to the4 SD zoo panda site and review the animal attendant blogs from last year. You will see that the mom gradually leaves the cub for longer and longer periods but not until they are able to regulate their temperature. The blog was pretty much a daily log of activity and will give you an idea of how long that takes.
-
Ok...can I have one of these since I can't have a falcon chick? ::)
So cute... :-*
....so much to say here.... :(

Bai ate on day three with one of her cubs and not until day 8 with another. Some have been known to fast up to 2 weeks or longer - those in the wild where food isn't left right outside the den by keepers ::)
Before she starts her denning, she will start bulking up on food - can gain an extra 40+ pounds or so in preparation for the birth. This is what enables her to fast when the cub is born.
-
Bai has left the den, hurry baby is out in full view...oh I see mama's shadow and she's back. Must have been a quick 'loo' break :-\
-
See, I miss it every time. Was gettin' ready for work and I don't think that the boss would accept the excuse that I was waiting for Bai to leave the den so I could check out the babe!! LOL
I did get a bit of a peek last night when she was snuggling with it under her chin. Could see the head and a little paw waving around. I just can't get over how tiny it is.
-
And so fetal looking
-
They really are so tiny and helpless. Can you imagine finally opening your eyes after a month and seeing 'da big mama' ..hehe..I wonder what they think :o :o Although I suppose that might be part of the reason they are born blind..nature's way of getting them to bond with momma and depend on her so you won't care that her paw is bigger than you are ;)
-
They've got a new blog up today Birdlover and it addresses your questions waay better and more accurately than I ever could ;)
http://blogs.sandiegozoo.org/
And the cub is vocal...more than ZZ ... In an older blog when ZZ was born they did a comparison on the vocalizations and the boy (Mei Sheng) was the more vocal ...so I'm hoping this little one is a boy :-*
Grasping at straws I know but I can hope ;D
-
Baby in full view now!!! Can see the faint black a bit too!!!
http://www.sandiegozoo.org/pandacam/index.html
Oh that was awesome!! And the cam guys zoomed right in on him...sooo cute and teeny tiny :-* :-*
-
Oh, that was a real treat -- first time I've managed to tune in at the right time to see the baby.
-
Argh!! Missed it by - that much!!!
-
Argh!! Missed it by - that much!!!
*sigh* I saw you online, that's why I posted it so you could see :P She will start leaving more frequently in the next few days but for short little bursts. The first 10 days are the really crucial ones it seems - kind of like our little falcon babies. The baby will be a week old tomorrow already!

Aw, thanks carly. I appreciate that. :-* I have been able to catch a couple of small glimpses of a part of the little one. But not the whole thing. I will just keep watching.
-
Yay, I got a glimpse of the wee one just now. Bai was cleaning it and the lower half of it was exposed to the camera and they zoomed in on it.
;D
-
From the original panda cam page, go to the panda blogs. The latest has a video of the newborn as Bai Yun leaves it and you can get a great glimpse of our baby and also hear it call out for mama to get herself right back.
The warm fuzzies : looking at peregrine fluff balls or panda babies, sigh, two such different worlds but I am hooked on both.
Years ago, I saw a drawing of Garfield the cat, sitting with his eyes closed, holding his teddy bear snugly, smiling serenely with a dream image above his head of a huge teddy bear, holding Garfield!
This must be what a panda cub dreams about! :)
-
Over the last couple of days, I've managed to see the little one alone several times. It's hard to believe that such a tiny, almost featureless creature could belong to Bai Yun. Mothers' instincts are truly amazing -- I don't know how she manages to pick up the infant without crushing it, much less nurse it and cradle it while it sleeps. The difference in size is staggering!
-
She gently picks it up with her mouth than cradles and positions it with her paws. She is amazing to watch. She examines the baby closely while it nurses than gives it a bath. Time to snooze, than start all over.
-
Gotta love animals..I'm just sayin'! :)
-
Aw, just got a super sweet shot of Bai with baby tucked under her chin. Too cute.

They must grow into the tail cuz this one is quite long and they only have a little stub of a tail don't they??
-
Yes they grow into their tail, Birdlover. It is amazing to watch the little one grow. I could see the faint coloring of the black band around it's shoulders earlier this week.
-
Great shot of mum and baby snuggled together right now!! You can see the dark areas already emerging. Little one has grown so much :o
-
Nature is strange, weird and wonderful.
When a panda cub is born, its tail is almost as long as its legs.
As it grows, the tail is reabsorbed into the spinal column.
That is why is almost disappears!
This baby's tail is already shorter than at birth.
Watch, wonder and marvel!

I did not know that, thanks Moka! I watched Xi Lan from birth - well for a day or two and then he got sick and they kept him off cam for quite awhile and I missed this part of the growth period.
-
Squeeeeel!! Close up right now of the baby...you can see his black vest!! :-*
-
Yeah I've been watching the webcam and have seen the young one's "black vest" as you so nicegly put it Carly. Bai Yun keeps up the great mothering too!!
-
It's interesting to see how much the little one has grown and changed in less than two weeks -- although it still needs to change a lot before it'll look like a panda. ;) Bai Yun is keeping it very close and rarely leaving it so there aren't many glimpses of the baby on its own, but I too was glad to see the start of its black vest. At this point, it looks almost like a shadow rather than real colouring. I'm really looking forward to watching the baby grow and change over the next while.
-
Yeah it will be an interesting next few weeks because as time goes on Bai Yun will gradually leave the cub a bit more and more and then it will get interesting!
-
Wow, just got a very good long look at the wee one without mum there. She must have gone for a nosh and boy was the wee one hollering.
It's getting so big and the black is sure showing clearly now.
Nice....
-
There was just a great close-up of the cub -- safely under Mama's paw, but clearly squealing. This is the first time I've been able to see the black ears, and I'm positive the vest is a little darker than a couple of days ago. Intriguing!
-
I just watched a great few minutes of Bai Yun bathing the little one. It's quite a contrast to see how gently she holds the baby -- and then to look at the size of the claws on her paw.
-
Got to see the "cutie petutie" this afternoon. What a thrill! Thanks for the link, carly! :D And very interesting info, about a baby panda's tail being re-absorbed into it's spinal column, moka. I didn't know that either! 8)
-
If you need an 'awwwww' for the day, check out the pics Helene snapped of cubbie today! Oh my god, he/she is adorable!! I miss so much at work :P Just scroll down, you can see the cub almost smiling and see his full little belly!

Nice shot of them right now too!
-
those are too cute!!!!! What a sweetie. I can hardly wait to find out what the sex is. Bai sure is taking good care of the little one.
-
Thanks, Carly -- those are great photos! The view on the cam right now is good, too -- cub tucked safely in mama's paws.
-
I know, I could watch them all day!! Oh wait....I do... ;D
-
;D ;D Me too!! ;D ;D
-
Me three...if only I could!
-
Me 4, allikat! ;D They are too cute for words!
-
:o Holy Sheep Dip :o I haven't seen this little one for four days and WOW, has it ever grown!!
It sure does look like a tiny panda now. Bai Yun is obviously doing a great job. Wish the camera was still zooming in when she goes out of the den.
-
BirdLover, the cam really is zooming in, at least occasionally, when Bai Yun leaves the den -- just today, I managed to catch a couple of good cub-only views. The problem is how to check in at the right moment, and usually I'm not that lucky!
-
Same here....I try to get a close-up view of the little one, but no such luck! :(
-
I did check in once when the camera was zoomed right in on Mom and little one - but it was so close it was hard to tell what was what. All I could tell for sure was one little paw with mighty long claws on it!
-
Those claws are really something, aren't they? It makes such an interesting picture when you see that tiny cub cradled in that huge paw, with the threatening claws in sight.
-
A real awww moment right now. Baby cuddled under Mom's chin. Awwwwwwwwww!
-
What a big surprise...I missed it! ::)
-
great view of the cub right now... it's just wiggling away on mom.
-
Baby panda is all alone right now -- great close-up of the tiny critter, looking more and more like a panda.
-
They did a zoom in of his ...err...wee bits.. earlier and if I had any doubts that it was a boy..I don't now ;D Unless it's some sort of weird panda birth mark...I don't know much about panda anatomy :-\
-
You mean the unmentionable bits??? ::)
-
*sigh* I was even careful how I worded it.... ::) Go here and scroll down to the bottom, pandalover got 2 screenshots of the moment in question!

-
Cutie pie cubbie alone alert...oh no they are zooming in down there again!! Leave the boy alone :o stop staring ;D
-
That camera certainly gets personal, doesn't it??? Poor little guy has no privacy at all. Carly, your first description -- "wee bits" -- is definitely accurate! ;D
-
Oh, and such a round little tummy -- Bai Yun is keeping her little one well fed anyway.
-
I just checked in to the webcam and the camera is zoomed in on the little one. It was on it's back and is now on it's stomach, sleeping.
-
Awwwwww . . . thanks, eagle -- these little glimpses while Bai Yun is away don't always last long!
-
Aw, they are so cute all snuggled up together. Looks like Bai is holding her little teddy bear while she sleeps.
I just love that she doesn't keep him so close now and we get great shots of him!
-
I noticed yesterday she barely left the den and just slept with him/her cuddled up next to her. Same scene this morning too..she's such a great mom! I think this is the longest they've ever gone without getting a chance to examine the cub - she's not letting go of this one :-* :-*
-
There must not be anybody to man the zoom button on the weekends. Last night and this morning Bai left the den to eat and left the little guy exposed for quite some time. But, no close ups. Still good to see him squirming around and I can just imagine that he is hollering up a storm while mum is away.
-
:o Wow, the powers that be must have read my post, cuz they zoomed right in on the wee one. KEWL!!!
-
Cubbie stretched out on Mom's paw - too cute! ;D ;D ;D
-
YAY!!!!! I finally got to see the little one cuddled up to Mom today. So sweet! I love animals!!

I saw that too carly. It looked like she wasn't quite sure what she should be doing. LOL I am so amazed at how good she is at mothering. And, at how big that little guy has grown in just three weeks.
Of course, we were all amazed at how big our chicks got in that time too.
-
It's a BOY!!!! Woot!!
http://blogs.sandiegozoo.org/blog/2009/09/03/baby%e2%80%99s-first-exam/
-
Yes indeedy Bai Yun has a boy!!!!
-
Great close-up of the wee one. That little guy sure is a squirmy little toad. He wasn't close enough to Bai so he squirmed and hollered until she semi-woke and pulled him in closer. I guess he then decided he needed to feed so just kept squirming until she woke up enough to figure it out. Mum, mum, muuuummm!!
'Cept now the camera operator needs someone to do the same for them. Great close-up of Bai's -hine foot :P
-
If I could, I would watch these two all day and all night....*token head tilt and awwwww* :-*
-
Bai Yun just took the baby out of the den!! They switched the cams outside now...field trip!!
-
Second Exam for cubby today, a video will be put up later!

It is really fun watching this little guy grow. What a privilege.

San Diego Zoo - Panda Cub's 2nd Exam (http://www.sandiegozoo.org/videos/?bcpid=4552241001&bclid=5172095001&bctid=39109451001)

Loved the milk mustache! Too cute!
-
On the Atlanta Panda Bear Cam, the little fellow is bugging his mom to no end; he is a very active cub, and he loves to jump all over his mom; every time she moves, he snaps at her hind legs, and when she tries to hide under a tree trunk, he jumps on top of her; when she goes to get a bite to eat, he jumps on her bamboo and sticks his rear-end in her face. She has the patience of a saint, though, and he is a delight to watch; I think that eventually her patience will wear thin, though, and she will likely smack him.
-
Hehe..you are right Eli, sometimes she gives as good as she gets with Xi but she is always gentle with him..well except when she pulls him down from the teepee and he falls to the ground :P.
-
That little panda cub at the San Diego Zoo is just a delight - right now, he is laying on his back with his paws in the air; but, he wants to turn over, and can't do it by himself, so he is calling for mom - and you can tell that he is hollering! He has got to be the cutest little guy on the planet!
-
Bai Yun is certainly leaving the little guy on his own a lot longer lately. I've been going back and forth to the panda cam for the last couple of hours and it's been all baby, all the time.
-
It doesn't get much better than watching all baby all the time. He's tooo cute!
-

I totally agree -- my comment was far from being a complaint! It's interesting, though, to see Bai Yun leaving him for such extended times -- obviously she feels that baby is growing up!
-
I just cannot believe how huge he is already. She can't really tuck him in anywhere anymore. I just love it when he is sleeping alone and they zoom in on him. You can see all the little details.

When the cub is first born, he is like an eyases and can't regulate his body temperature until his fur comes in. He also can only nurse for short bursts so mom has to be with him constantly. Once the fur comes in she can leave him a bit longer as he won't be cold. Also now you will notice he will nurse for a longer time so he takes in more milk. Therefore mom can spend longer times away eating herself to fuel up.
Bamboo is not a very filling food which is why they have to spend so much time eating. For their bodies to convert the boo to milk requires alot of food and energy so Bai will be away for much longer periods of time now. But she is never too far away in case he needs her.
-
Thanks carly. I did notice that the times away are longer and we get good shots of the little guy. Your explanation helps.
Happy watching!

Yes, he certainly is the "cutest little guy on the planet", Eli! My new bunch of Kinderchicklets have been watching him! :D

Insert chick for cub and pigeon for bamboo and milk and you pretty much have a hairy flightless peregrine there .... ;D

Our little panda boy down in San Diego just had his 9th exam. As if it is even possible for him to be cuter! But he is, especially those big blue eyes!

He is just so laid back and cuddly! Easy to see why they take turns carrying him out - everybody would want a chance.
-
They are having a virtual cub shower on Thursday, November 5th. Should be interesting.

Did you notice that the names are up for voting? Voting ends on Tuesday so, if you want a say in the new panda's name, be sure to vote soon!
-
Yes I'm trying to decide now which name to choose!!
These are the 5 choices:
Name the Cub
Which name best suits our newest panda cub?
福圣 Fú Shèng (fu sheng): blissful San Diego
小龙 Xiǎo Lóng (siao long): little dragon
熊伟 Xióng Wěi (syong wei): extraordinary bear
永祥 Yǒng Xiǎng (yong siang): eternally blessed
云子 Yún Zǐ (yun zih): son of cloud
-
At approximately 6:15 pm EST tonight Baiby crawled out of the den for the first time on his own!!!! ;D ;D ;D
-
The little panda cub had his latest exam yesterday. What a surprise when the little cutie barked! He sounded just like my dog, but he is so much cuter than my dog - and boy, did he ever show an independent spirit during this exam!
-
Isn't he a sweetie? I laughed to read the blog of the PR officer who had difficulty observing the previous examination without oohing and aaaahing -- easy to understand her dilemma! I was just watching him with Bai Yun and find it difficult to believe how much he's grown. Fourteen weeks isn't really that long to progress from a pink and hairless blob to the adorable baby panda he is now. And his naming ceremony is on Tuesday -- wonder which name won?
-
Had no idea pandas barked. And after just little squeaks! I would expect maybe a growl, but a bark? And he was certainly much more awake this time - at some of the earlier exams he almost slept through them. Definitely our little guy is growing up!
-
Wasn't he adorable??!! I must have watched it at leat 7 times last night and love the bark!! They bark when they are annoyed and upset apparently. The bleat when they are happy as a way of greeting. :-*
-
I want one! ::)
-
He certainly gave them all a piece of his young mind lol
-
Well the panda cub received his name today. He is Yun Zi, or son cloud or cloud son, I can't remember. This is the first time the name I voted for got chosen. It was a very close race between little dragon and the one that was chosen. May the son of cloud grow up to be a big strong panda and continue the magnifcant conservation work the USA and China are doing to help panda's survive extinction.
-
It's a great name, isn't it, Eagle? It was my choice, too, although I was pleasantly surprised at the five choices -- all were good names. And what a gorgeous little critter he's growing into!
-
black and white just like his mom ... and dad ... and aunts and uncles, grandparents, great-grandparents and fourth cousins-in-law, nine times removed .... ::) :D
-
I still want one!! :)
-

True, his wardrobe doesn't change much -- but he's still a sweetie (as are all baby animals!).

Well written Eagle...I and many others agree!!!
-
lol I am watching the Pandacam and mum is giving yun zi a bath and it is as if the little guy is saying, "Mummmmmm stooopppppp I wanna explore not have a bath."
-
Sit at doorway, roll over onto back, nibble on back toes, suddenly collapse into napping ....
hard life for the little hairball :D

Lol..I saw that too!
-
I would have loved to have seen the bath. Whenever I go to see how the little fellow is doing, he is sleeping. The most action I get watching him is when he rolls over on occasion during his naps.
-
Well Eli keep watching because things are about to get interesting now that the cub is starting to get his back legs in use lol
-
True, his wardrobe doesn't change much -- but he's still a sweetie (as are all baby animals!).
All baby animals with the possible exception of a baby moose. That's a face only a mother could love.

TORONTO:
Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti says the city is getting closer to securing a 10-year loan of a breeding pair of giant pandas from China.
Mammoliti, who is now in China, told the Sun yesterday that Toronto officials made a "necessary first step," signing letters of intent for the pandas with the Chongqing Zoo and the Chinese national zoo association.
All that's left, Mammoliti said, is for the federal government to officially ask the Chinese government.
"You can't do this without (Prime Minister Stephen) Harper now, and all we need from Harper is a letter that basically endorses us going after the pandas," Mammoliti said.
Toronto Zoo officials estimate a giant panda exhibit would draw an additional 450,000 visitors in the first year, and 150,000 extra visitors in the second year. The exhibit would bring in $19.2 million over 10 years, according to estimates.
** OUR OWN WEB-CAM PERHAPS??**
-
Don't have a relative in Toronto, but hey, Ottawa and Stratford are close enough! ;D
-
Yeah, I remember spending over an hour (twice) watching the pandas when they visited Winnipeg a number of years ago. Looking at the photos I took then, it still seems impossible to believe that I was really that close to two real live pandas. Would definitely have to consider a visit east if Toronto pulls off this ten-year loan!
-
If Toronto gets a loan of the panda's I will be there for sure, me and my camera!!!!!! It's only a couple of hours from here wooohooo!!
-
Just read the blog about Yun Zi's latest examination -- although the video isn't up yet, it sounds as though he's turned into a really active little guy -- the video should be great!
-
Just saw the video of the 14th exam - oh my that was priceless - what an active little guy. Makes instant smiles!!
-
Now that he is starting to move there will be no stopping him checking out the world :)
-
He is just too cute! And the vet having to chase him around on the floor - especially as he gets even more active! ;D ;D Yes, alli, I know you want one, but I really don't think your poor cat could cope with a rambunctious little fellow like him!
-
Yes, alli, I know you want one, but I really don't think your poor cat could cope with a rambunctious little fellow like him!
I know...but one can dream ::)
-
Dreams are good! :D
-
My gosh, I just saw the little fellow venture outside! Well, what I should say is that his front end is outside, but his back end is firmly planted inside. He is giving serious thought to making a go for it, though. Go for it, little guy!
-
Mama won't be able to hide from him much longer ;D
-
He is just soooo sweet!!!! I love wildlife. :-*
-
He's all boy ;D ;D ;)

Oh my he is all boy alright lol

Harper backs Toronto Zoo's bid for pair of giant pandas
The Toronto Zoo's panda program has scored some high-profile support.
The Toronto Sun reported Prime Minister Stephen Harper is backing the zoo's bid for a pair of breeding pandas.
A letter from Harper's chief of staff stated the government would be delighted to assist in bringing giant pandas to Canada.
Toronto Zoo board member City Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti told the newspaper the letter virtually seals the deal to bring a pair of endangered giant pandas from China to Toronto on a 10-year loan.
He said they could arrive as early as two years from now.
****( and maybe a camera or two? ) ****
-
Sounds really promising, Loriann -- my fingers are crossed!
-
we'll see if it happens.. they'll need to build a habitat for them.. and no money for that.. and now all the 'screamers' will come out.. the zoo needs a new elephant enclosure too... and another elephant or two to complete the ageing existing herd.. they must maintain a certain number of elephants as they are herd animals and its a rule to maintain their acredited status. the zoo has lost two females in the last year or so, and are now down to three.
if they do come, you can bet i'll be there camera in hand, so i'll keep you all in 'pictures', providing i can muscle Carly and her mom out of the way.. lol

Giant Panda Lun Lun Confirmed to be Pregnant
Zoo Atlanta’s Veterinary Team has observed a viable fetus during routine ultrasound procedures on female giant panda Lun Lun. Ultrasound images obtained since Monday the 18th confirm a growing fetus with a strong heartbeat. Based on the size of the fetus, which is currently 2.24 centimeters long, the Animal Management and Veterinary Teams estimate that a birth should occur in 10 days to 2 weeks. While cautiously optimistic, experts caution that Lun Lun could still miscarry or reabsorb the fetus as her pregnancy progresses.
Round-the-clock birth watch began on Monday, October 18 and will continue through birth and the first months of the cub’s life. Giant panda gestation averages 135 days, but can range from 83 to 197 days.
A cub would be the third offspring for Lun Lun and Yang Yang, both 13. The Animal Management and Veterinary Teams opted to employ artificial insemination (AI) on June 13, 2010, after the pair failed to mate naturally. Lun Lun’s and Yang Yang’s previous offspring, Mei Lan, 4 and now a resident of Chengdu, China, and Xi Lan, 2, a resident of Zoo Atlanta, were the only cubs born in the U.S. in 2006 and 2008. Both were the products of AI.
Additional updates will be provided as details are available. The Zoo’s giant pandas are watched daily by fans around the world on PandaCam presented by Earthcam. PandaCam, which runs Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., has remained the most visited page on zooatlanta.org since shortly after the arrival of Lun Lun and Yang Yang in 1999.

Labor begins for giant panda Lun Lun
11-03-10
The only cub born in the U.S. in 2010 is on its way
Zoo Atlanta officials have announced that labor has begun for expectant giant panda mother Lun Lun. The 13-year-old female has been under round-the-clock monitoring since birth watch began on October 18, 2010.
The actual time the cub will arrive remains uncertain. Giant panda labor typically lasts seven to eight hours but can be as brief as one to two hours or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, much longer. Lun Lun’s labor with her first offspring, Mei Lan, lasted 36 hours and is still the longest giant panda labor ever recorded. By comparison, Lun Lun’s second cub, Xi Lan, arrived in just under nine hours.
The cub will be the only giant panda born in the U.S. in 2010 and is the third for Lun Lun and 13-year-old male Yang Yang. Additional updates will be provided as details are available.
The Zoo’s giant pandas are watched daily by fans around the world on PandaCam presented by Earthcam. PandaCam streams Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fans are encouraged to stay abreast of all things panda by following Zoo Atlanta on our website and on Twitter, joining the Zoo Atlanta Facebook community, and registering for biweekly eUpdate newsletters.

Giant panda born at Zoo Atlanta
by Zoo Atlanta on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 10:15am
Lun Lun delivers the only cub born in the U.S. in 2010
Lun Lun, a 13-year-old female giant panda at Zoo Atlanta, gave birth to her third cub on November 3, 2010. The cub, born at 5:39 a.m. in a specially-prepared birthing den in the Zoo’s giant panda building, is the only giant panda to be born in the U.S. in 2010.
Lun Lun appears to be providing appropriate care for her cub, which is roughly the size of a cell phone. The Animal Management and Veterinary Teams will continue round-the-clock monitoring of mother and cub, and a preliminary veterinary checkup will be performed as soon as staff is able to remove the cub without disrupting maternal care.
“We are extremely excited about welcoming Lun Lun’s and Yang Yang’s third cub, and proud of the success of Zoo Atlanta’s giant panda program,” said Dwight Lawson, PhD, Deputy Director. “This is a joy we share with the City of Atlanta, our colleagues in China, and our counterparts at our fellow zoological organizations housing giant pandas in the U.S.”
Zoo Atlanta Members and guests can expect to meet the cub in spring 2011. The cub’s father, 13-year-old Yang Yang, and older brother, Xi Lan, remain on exhibit and will not be introduced to their new family member. This separation is normal for giant pandas, which are solitary in the wild.
The newborn is the third offspring for the Zoo’s famous panda pair. Born September 6, 2006, their firstborn, Mei Lan, has lived at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding since February 2010. Born August 30, 2008, the pair’s second cub, 2-year-old male Xi Lan, remains one of the Zoo’s most popular and precocious animal stars. As is the case with Lun Lun’s tiny newest arrival, both Mei Lan and Xi Lan were the only giant pandas born in the U.S. in their respective birth years. All three births have been the products of artificial insemination.
The birth is a significant achievement for global efforts to save a critically endangered species. Fewer than 1,600 giant pandas are estimated to remain in the wild. There are approximately 280 individuals living in zoological institutions, only 11 of which reside in the U.S.
In the months leading up to the cub’s debut, images will be available on monitors at the Zoo’s Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation Giant Panda Conservation Center and on PandaCam presented by EarthCam. PandaCam streams daily, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fans are encouraged to stay abreast of all things panda by following Zoo Atlanta on our website and on Twitter, joining the Zoo Atlanta Facebook community, and registering for biweekly eUpdate newsletters.
