Title: Allen's Hummingbirds - California / Phoebe
Post by: birdcamfan on January 04, 2010, 17:07
For those of you who just need a nesting Mom to look at, this site got me through last spring. There are two eggs laid on Jan 2 and 4th. This Mom seems to constantly have babies. It's a great site and lots of fun to watch.

Love these pictures....I adore hummingbirds.  It isn't often that we get to witness them just incubating and not hummin' around a mile a second.

Gotta love wildlife webcams  ;D

Both have hatched; Mom left the nest for a moment, but returned immediately and did not feed the babies.

I noticed on the site that the babies, both hatched on January 19, are named Sassy and Storm.

Sad news from this site too -- it seems that on January 25, little Storm stopped moving, and only Sassy has survived.

California has been having some bad weather of late has it not?  If they did, that could very well have been a contributing factor, particularly since the chicks are so small and so too are the parents ....

Is this the female (or nest) that had 3 or 4 clutches last year?  I can't remember ....  ???

The chick, (Sassy) has been taken out of the nest and sent to rehab. I don't know what the problem was but the chat sounds like they were worried that her feathers weren't developing properly. They think she was malnourished.

Too bad about Sassy, she had made it so far!

It will be interesting to see if they nest again given the lack of fruit flies in the area - usually they renest a couple of times per season as I recall ....

I am so sad to hear about Sassy - I noticed that she was slow to acquire feathers, but sometimes baby birds who grow slowly at first catch up later.

According to the site, Phoebe is now preparing Jade and Julep's nest for eggs.

Sassy just before she went into rehab; pic from Raptor Resource.  :'(

There were two eggs yesterday, one had a pip in it, but no hatch.  Then today a lizard tried to steal it, but was beaten off by Phoebe who promptly returned to the nest and took away the egg.  One left now.  There's a video of the lizard attack and egg removal:

I have just recently started watching this Hummingbird webcab, while waiting for Trey to return to Winnipeg. Another 2 eggs were laid in the past few days! :D One was laid early in the morning on March 29th and another early this morning...WOW! I did not know Hummingbirds were so prolific!  :o From reading past posts, it seems that eggs have been laid every month since January, although none of the birds have survived... Sure do hope these 2 eggs have a chance.

Yes, Ellie!  :'( I have been out of town visiting a friend and we just stepped away from the webcam to have lunch... We were so excited about the 2 new eggs! Then, when we returned, they were gone, apparently snatched and eaten by a crow! :'( We are so very sad about this! :'(

It's a surprise she laid anymore at all as this is coming up to her "off" time according to the website. This Mama needs a few months off. She must lose a lot of calcium.

Thanks for this post, birdcamfan. I am new at learning about hummingbirds. Didn't know much about their reproductive cycle. Hadn't even thought about the calcium loss. It was just such a shock for me yesterday when her eggs were snatched by a crow, particularly after I had been watching her get ready to lay them. And when she returned to her nest, she appeared to be looking for them, which was sad. :'(

Phoebe Allan is the Hummingbird on a nest in California who has had a variety of nasty things happening to her eggs (ie. attacked by lizards, snatched by crows!) She's actually on the thread below this one, TPC. Maybe you want to move these posts there? :-\

There may be a bit of confusion here, TPC.  :-\ There are two different Hummingbird webcams on this thread, both with similar last names. Pheobe Allen is a Hummingbird in Orange County, California and Bitsy Allan is a different Hummingbird in San Juan Capistrano, California. Go figure? ???

Especially Kinderchick since the species of hummingbird is an "Allen's Hummingbird"  :o :D ;) :-*

From Wikipedia ...

The Allen's Hummingbird, Selasphorus sasin, is a species of hummingbird. The Allen's Hummingbird is a small bird, with mature adults reaching only 3 to 3½ inches (75 to 90 mm) in length. The male Allen's has a green back and forehead, with rust-colored rufous flanks, rump, and tail. The male's throat is also an iridescent orange-red. The female and immature Allen's Hummingbirds are similarly colored, but lack the iridescent throat patch, instead having a series of speckles on their throat. Females are mostly green, featuring rufous colors only on the tail, which also has white tips. The female and immature Allen's Hummingbirds are so similar to the female Rufous Hummingbird that the two are almost indistinguishable in the field. Both species' breeding seasons and ranges are common factors used to differentiate between the two species in a particular geographical area.

The Allen's Hummingbird is common only in the brushy woods, gardens, and meadows of coastal California from Santa Barbara north, and a minuscule portion of lower Oregon. The nominate race of Allen's Hummingbird S.s. sasin is migratory, and winters along the Pacific coast of central Mexico. A second race S.s. sedentarius is a permanent resident on the Channel Islands off southern California. This population colonized the Palos Verdes Peninsula of Los Angeles County in the 1960s and has since spread over much of Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

In reviewing both of the links to both of these different Allen's Hummingbird webcams, which both happen to be in California, it seems as if I am the one who was confused! ::) Both Hummingbirds are in fact Allen's Hummingbirds, a particular species of Hummingbird! (Thanks for pointing that out to me, TPC!) :-* I guess what was confusing for me, was trying to follow posts about 2 different Hummingbirds and 2 different webcams on the same thread! Well, that and not noticing the correct spelling of the word "Allen"! ::)

If you poke around in Phoebe's site (the Allen Hummingbird at this site is named Pheobe) there is lots of information and links to rescue shelters in California. I learned a lot.

That Phoebe!  What a hardworking bird she is, especially considering how small she is.  She hardly ever stops working; I have seen her actually sleeping (with one eye open) only twice since I have been watching this cam.

The Kinderchicklets watched Phoebe on the other computer in their classroom this morning and were very interested to see the difference between her wee tiny nest in the branch of a Rose bush and the nest of Edmonton's Mother Goose, in a big bale of hay! They even got to see one of Phoebe's eggs when she left her nest for a few minutes!  :D

Lots of excitement for Phoebe this morning! The Kinderchicklets kept hearing a dog barking in the background, (while we were singing "O Canada" at school, I might add!), then the webcam appeared to move and the nest went out of site. Then we saw a man walking over to the webcam. I guess he was adjusting the camera. The 'chicklets found all of this quite amusing!  ;) Everything's all settled down now and Phoebe is back on her nest. Hatch date is scheduled for Mother's Day! ;D

They certainly do look squished.  When they move around it is like the nest is elastic.  Guess that is why it is bound with spider webbing.  Amazing :o

I wasn't aware that TPC had already given instructions on how to do this. TPC is excellent at explaining things, so it would be redundant for me even to attempt to do so. I am sure that she explains it much better than I ever could.

It certainly is a tight fit for the chicks in the nest now:

Don't be modest Alison, there is absolutely no comparison between the number of webcaptures you have done and the number I have done.  And you have captured more from different types of webcams - so please if you can make suggestions, please do!!

Feel free to post suggestions/instructions in the Forum's "How Do I?" thread (http://www.species-at-risk.mb.ca/projects/pfrp/forum/programs/index.php/board,19.0.html) - I'll happy to learn all your tricks as well!!  :D

Hadn't checked in on Phoebe and her chicks for a few days. Apparently, a crow startled the 2 chicks out of their nest on Friday.  >:( Hoku was found on the ground and placed back into the nest, where he remains right now.  :) But Hope has not been found.  :( It is thought that she may have fledged. Apparently, Hoku should be fledging any day now.

Hoku is still in the nest, hasn't fledged yet, so Phoebe continues to show up with food for him. Some of my Kinderchicklets were studying all of the "poop art" on that one leaf in particular and thought it was blueberries! LOL! ;D

I'm not sure what happened to Phoebe's eggs, Elaine. :-\ Yesterday, there were clearly 2 eggs in her nest but today when we looked, we couldn't see any eggs either... I'm wondering if a crow came along and ate them, like last year? ??? They are, after all, the size of a tic tac! :o We didn't even see Phoebe or her partner at all this morning. :'(

Just read this on the Hummingbird website...

Both eggs were found on the ground this morning, broken. Phoebe will have another clutch soon.

I imagine it won't be till sometime in December, though, when she will lay more eggs.  :-\ She will likely need to replenish the calcium in her wee little body.

Title: Re: Allen's Hummingbirds - California / Phoebe (2010)
Post by: Elaine L on November 04, 2010, 10:49
On Phoebe's Facebook site, someone reported that Phoebe kicked the eggs out of the nest.  If this is true, I expect they were not viable. I am sorry to read this, but the main thing is that Phoebe is o.k., and can still have another clutch.
Title: Re: Allen's Hummingbirds - California / Phoebe (2010)
Post by: Kinderchick on November 04, 2010, 15:14
Yes, you are right, Elaine. If Phoebe removed the eggs, then she likely knew that they were not viable. I heard alot of crows around the terrritory. Maybe they were damaged by crows and then Phoebe removed them? :-\ Last year, she had 5 clutches! :o Only 3 chicks in total fledged successfully, though. But as you've said, at least we can look forward to another clutch! :)

Reports are that she was making 2 nests, however, she has been concentrating on one particular rose bush branch.  The people are a lot of fun and the chatter back and forth is a lot of fun!

The chicks are really growing in leaps and bounds! They barely fit in their nest anymore and I caught them "wingersizing" this afternoon! :D

I enjoyed these darlings off and on all weekend. :-*  They grow so fast and soon they'll be gone!  Phoebe is a great mom and it's fun to watch her feeding the babies, jamming that long beak of hers down their wee throats :o  It's nice to see the colourful vegetation surrounding the nest, while we shiver in the deep freeze! :P

Chicks are SO big now! And one of them (Bea, I think) could fledge any day! :o Hard to believe, considering she only hatched January 18th!

I know! :o  Everything these guys do is so fast!  I'm sure little Bea will be gone any minute.  I'm guessing that once they leave, they're gone - no coming back to the nest for these guys :'(  Ill miss them.

I haven't been able to check in on Bea and Jay for a couple of days :'( and was sure that when I tuned in tonight, I'd be seeing an empty nest!  I'm so happy to see that the little ones are still there, still growing and getting more beautiful...and outgrowing the cradle a little bit :o

Just checked to see if either of the chicks have fledged. Doesn't look like either has. But according to the website, Phoebe has been working very hard at building a new nest, which would bring her up to 5 nests in the yard. No more room for her to fit in the nest with her chicks now!  :o  So is it any wonder that she feels the need to build a new nest?! LOL! ;)

Bea and Jay were still at the nest site and with a couple of hours light left I can't see them fledging today.  Phoebe has been trying to encourage them to take flight though.

Bea fledged at 7:10 and Jay shortly after, KC.  That must be California time, so it was probably just after you and the chicklets checked! :o  There are two very good little videos, showing their flights away from the nest (the links are just above the chat page).  Poor Jay, looked so startled when his/her sib whirled away!  I miss those little guys! :'( but am so happy that they're healthy and doing what they're meant to do! ;D

Yes Phoebe has a new nest, she was working on building it up before Bea and Jay even fledged.  I gather the kids have been to the new nest but Phoebe has started to chase em out of the new nest if I am not mistaken.

First egg has been laid!  But one of the babies from the last clutch doesn't want to share her mom just yet, it seems!  :o  There's currently a very entertaining little "battle" going on.  Phoebe is trying to sit on her egg while another hummer keeps coming at her.  The chatters are saying that it's one of the babies who just fledged.  It's very entertaining  and keeping me from my chores :P  Oh well, they're not going anywhere! ;)

It'll be another fun adventure, however they do it! ;D  Looking forward to seeing Phoebe in the light of day tomorrow.  Work sure gets in the way of my wildlife watching :P

OMG! Lots of drama at the hummingbird nest today! :o I missed it all. Had tons of errands to attend to all day. ::) Just checked and it looks as if the second chick is still moving, although seems to still be partially in the shell. It's head is moving around a bit. Mom just returned and fed the first chick but not the second one. Apparently, the second chick has not eaten yet. That is not a good sign. Maybe Phoebe knows it is not doing well? :-\ I do hope that it will survive, but I guess time will tell.

I sure hope not!  We'll know soon though, since changes happen very quickly with Phoebe's babies as we know!  Baby #1 also wasn't interested in eating the last time Phoebe offered, so hoo nose?!? ???

At least the #2 is now sitting alongside #1 like the other chicks have been.  Of course, now you can really see the difference in size  :(

I actually did think that Che Che might be a preemie, because she was only laid on April 15th and hatched on April 29th or 30th. That might have been a wee bit early for her to be hatching. Hatch is usually 16-18 days from date laid.

Just an additional tidbit of information about the name Joplin, while we are on the subject.  I thought Joplin, Missouri was named after the ragtime composer Scott Joplin, who hailed from Missouri, but apparently not; Joplin, the town, is named after the Reverend Joplin, a Methodist minister who settled in the area.

Ah... I imagine you are right about that, jadoo... Also, interesting "tidbit" about how Joplin, Missouri got it's name, Elaine. I didn't know that either.

As for Phoebe, her 2nd chick hatched this morning between 10:30 & 11:00 AM. The Kinderchicklets were watcing and were very excited to see this event. About a half hour before the hatch, we could even see the baby chick moving around inside the egg. It was VERY cool! ;D 8)

You're right, susha, they don't look ready to make a move yet. ::) Mom just flew in with another feeding. That's what enticed the last ones to finally leave home. Lots of feedings, just prior to fledging. LOL!  Maybe for energy. ;)

Lots of wingersizing going on with both of these two. Even a few vertical lift-offs in the air, but right back down in the nest again. Or on top of each other. LOL. 8)

I know!  These two are hilarious!  They're just bulging out of the nest, sitting on top of each other...Phoebe eems to be trying to coax them to fly away, but they seem to want none of that... ::)

No, that's Heather right now, one of Phoebe's 2 chicks, still sitting in the nest, Doreen. Joplin keeps fledging and then returning to the nest. ::) I've never seen a hummingbird fledgling return to the nest so many times. Most of the photos on this board are from past years, I think. Darned if I know, Doreen. ::)  I can't seem to tell them apart. All I know is that the website has reported that Joplin has been fledging and returning home all day long and that is what the people on the chat board seem to be saying. So if you see one lone chick in the nest, that must be Heather because she has not yet fledged... BTW, great screen capture! :-*

I've had this nest on for much of the day and am completely fascinated by Joplin's behaviour!  I've been away for awhile and see that Heather is still on the nest and the folks on the chat point out that she hatched a day after Joplin, so she might not fledge until tomorrow.  They're very similar, obviously, but according to the "chatters", Heather has a shorter tail and a thicker neck.  Sometimes when the two of them are together, I can see a bit of difference between them, but it's very difficult! :)

Title: Re: Re: Allen's Hummingbirds - California / Phoebe (2011)
Post by: Elaine L on December 13, 2011, 14:37
Kinderchick, I don't think that is a silly question.  From what I have read on BCAW and other bird sites, they often get the sex of the hatchling wrong.  So, I am wondering if they are just guessing, based on what, I don't know; because hummingbirds are so small, I would think you can't tell based on size, as is often the case with falcons.
Title: Re: Re: Allen's Hummingbirds - California / Phoebe (2011)
Post by: Kinderchick on December 13, 2011, 21:02
MayShowers actually asked that question, Elaine, but I have to admit, I have wondered the same thing, particularly since hummingbird hatchlings are so tiny. I don't see how they could possibly identify the gender of the hatchlings. I think they just pick names and some sound like female names and some sound more like male names. :-\
Title: Re: Re: Allen's Hummingbirds - California / Phoebe (2011)
Post by: susha on December 17, 2011, 15:23
I've read somewhere on the Phoebe site that they don't ever know the genders of the babies because they fly off to establish their own territories once they've fledged and they're not banded.  They pick one male name and one female one for each clutch.

A sad, sad day :'(  A bird attacked the nest yesterday and Mary Jo and Woody are gone.  Just tuned into a view of the nest in pieces.  The chat banner advises that Phoebe is repairing the nest.  How very tragic for this little family.  But of course, Phoebe carries on! :-*

Oh no! This is terrible news! It is awful to look at the nest in tatters. Web chat says it was a Coopers Hawk that snatched the chicks. They were only days away from fledging. I will not be able to share this news with my Kinderchicklets. They will be heart broken. :'(

According to the chat board, a fledgling has been visiting one of the other nests, so it's thought that there might have been one survivor from the attack on the nest a few days ago. :D Here's hoping.

Phoebe's webcam has been turned off till the Fall, unless she shows an interest in having one more clutch this season, which is doubtful. She certainly deserves a break and needs to replenish the calcium in her wee little body. Until next Fall, Phoebe... :-*

Well, I can hardly believe it! My husband happened to take a look at Phoebe's website last evening and informed me that her webcam had been turned back on. Phoebe had laid 2 more eggs on June 5th & 7th. "Flash" hatched on June 22nd and "Opal" hatched on June 23rd. :D Fledgewatch begins july 13th. Here is a link to the hatch...

Well, I'm thanking my husband, Jazzerkins, because I never would have thought to look. She is usually finished nesting by the end of April... And here is a link to a video of Phoebe laying her most recent eggs. It is a great close-up and you can actually observe the eggs being laid. I've never seen this before. It is awesome!

OMG!   :o  I can't believe there's another clutch at this time of year!  Thank-you to your hubby, KC!  I was just thinking of Phoebe the other day.  It'll be so nice to have her family to check into again.  I wonder if she'll continue laying once these two cuties have fledged ???
Title: Re: Allen's Hummingbirds - California / Phoebe (2012)
Post by: Kinderchick on July 01, 2012, 20:03
Well, I think this is unusual, susha. She usually has about 5 clutches between October & May. But in reviewing the archives on her website, this year she was later and her 1st clutch of eggs were only laid in late November, with 1st hatches in mid December. So I guess it stands to reason that her last clutch is later in the season. I'm thinking, though, that this will be her last clutch until the fall. She certainly needs to replenish the calcium depletion in her wee little body.

And then Flash returned to the nest early this morning. For now, he keeps hovering up and down, above the nest and then back into the nest again. I guess he's demonstrating to Opal how it's done. ;) It almost looked as if he was trying to push Opal out of the nest. It is getting rather squishy for the 2 of them together in the nest.

He actually came back right away KC!  There was quite a flurry in the chat room - I missed his return as well ::)

According to the banner at the top of chat, he's left and returned several times.  He's there right now actually :)  These guys are so cute.  I can't believe how that nest is holding up!

Webcam's live ;D

It's not focussed on a nest yet, but if we're lucky, we can see Phoebe darting about the rosebush, making decisions about where to set up housekeeping for her first clutch.

The Phoebe season has begun :)

The non-viable egg was removed yesterday by the host of the webcam and an orphaned hummer placed in the nest today.  Phoebe didn't bat an eye, just fed it along with Fleur.  The new adopted baby has been named "Pip".

Yippee!!  What an interesting Phoebe season this is shaping up to be! ;D

Both baby hummingbirds are looking about, very interested in their surroundings.  They are so crammed into that little nest, but somehow, they adjust, taking turns in different positions, very accommodating to each other.  Phoebe just came by and fed them, so all is right with the world.
