The Peregrine Chick:
Here's some informaton on DDT ...

about the bans & use fighting malaria - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDT

and a video - http://www.science.gc.ca/default.asp?Lang=En&n=730D78B4-1

Most current articles & literature focus on ddt for killing mosquitos that carry malaria, and DDT is very effective and does exactly what it was designed to do and does it well.  What isn't mentionned often is that it is used as a pesticide on agricultural crops in Central and South America, some say because the crops are cash crops and particularly vulnerable to local pests for which they have no resistance.  Our birds winter in Central and South America as do their prey - the prey eats bugs that have eaten DDT or they eat seeds sprayed with DDT and then they become food for the peregrines and the DDT is stored in the falcon's fat reserves which they will then convert to produce the eggshells come next nesting season.

I didn't know that DDT is still a concern.  :o I thought it has been banned in Canada and the States since the early 70's. :-\
