Don't get me wrong, I'm not pro-peregrine or anti-raven.  Wildlife does what it does.  Problems only arise when what they do comes in conflict with human activities.  In this case, the activity is the recovery of an endangered species.  Ravens as a species will survive and thrive even if this pair fails this year.  Peregrines, which are much fewer in number and while they are doing better than they used to, do still need some assistance, and we have invested in laws/money/time/energy to help them.  The box was installed for peregrine use.

The ravens have proven how fast they can build a nest; they can find another location and will probably do just as well there; their eggs have not been destroyed; and the adults have not been "scared" off site nor have they been injured in any way.  It is unfortunate that the project needs to choose one species over another, but that is what the project was set up to do.  Perhaps if the ravens (or other species) return next year, the project might feel that they need to have a door or cover through the winter which would then be removed once the peregrines return.

Species-at-risk projects are well aware of the ecological dangers of choosing one species over another - that's how we got into this mess in the first place.  Everything has its place, but we have caused things to be out-of-whack and now and we have to redress the balance without making the same mistakes - everything has its place but some things need our help to get back to theirs.  The ravens, as a species, are fortunate to have avoided the damage we did to the peregrines.  Eviction is preferrable to extirpation.

Wonderful explanation as always TPC!!
Everything happens for a reason!  And sometimes, humans do need to interveen, especially when it comes to the peregrines.  This nestbox was vacant and had a sign "suite for rent".  The ravens grabbed it and moved in, but this box was built for the peregrines.
In a way, I do feel badly, especially after watching them work so hard & double time to make up a nest, but I'm very confident that they will work triple time to get another made up.
To these ravens, it's a lost/failed nest site, and I do hope they will succeed somewhere else.  After watching these two work together, they deserve a penthouse suite up in the trees...
I wish George & Weezie all the best to find that penthouse to raise their family.
Let's all wish them luck!
GOOD LUCK GEORGE & WEEZIE!  We wish you two all the best!

Strange.
I just tried logging back to the Alberta cam and could only get a JAVA logo on all three cam links.  Now I've switched from Safari to Firefox and have them all in view again.
No action at present.
Looks like a nice evening for Bev and her hubbie to walk off the doughnut looking for our birds, all birds!

Well she laid down in the box for awhile, then she came out on the perch and then she went to the edge of the box and look inside kinda confused and then she went back in, turned around and then back out and flew off.

Yeah and she's on the phone right now reporting a burglary to the local constabulary.

Let's hope the 'cleaner's' have hard hats, I have a feeling next time George will be showing them some 'raven 'rocks at ya' hospitality  :P

Here's a bit more to add to the mix ... the box was installed to help an endangered species.  Ravens are neat birds but they are not at-risk.  In my last post I mentionned that this site was hotly fought over last year ... from a project perspective, that would be a site I'd want for exclusive peregrine use because for whatever reason (I don't know the layout of the site well enough to make a definitive statement) that site attracted not two but three females last year.

And I would be evicting the ravens from the Radisson or West Winnipeg or Brandon nestboxes were they setting up shop.  I would do it fast and consistently so that they quickly learn that they were not going to nest in peace in that location.  If something had tried to nest at the Hotel last year after June 6th, I may well have done the same thing even when we knew the adults weren't going to re-nest - specifically so there wouldn't be anything to deter the peregrines this year.

If this were happening in Winnipeg:  Its a question of priorities.  Project priorities are to assist nesting wild peregrines.  Raven priorities are to nest somewhere.  My job is to make the first happen while my ethics make me do the latter as humanely as possible.  I have to believe the peregrines will return soon.  I do believe that the ravens will find a new location (near or far) and that they, being the particularly bright birds they are, will not want to repeat this season's upset next year which in turn makes me happy since disturbing them is not something I particularly want to do.

And I daresay you would get similar answers from the folks out in Alberta.
Well said Tracy.  ;D

My husband is due home so I am going to try and persuade him to go down with me.  A coffee and donut usually works ;D ;D
I want to check out the site for an falcon sightings and I will look for the ravens.I should spot them if they are  close beca use the area had magpies and a few crows., no other ravens and they were huge.

I hear ya Tracy.  Completely agree.  Over the last few days my frustration was that they were not consistently clearing out the ravens nest.  Like how about twice a day.  I kept looking for that kind of action.  I feel they are not managing this situation as well as they could and it disappoints me.  I know my knowledge is limited but this situation was kind of obvious.  I feel they have created a situation that just may have been averted, the situation being that I fear that poor mama raven is ready to lay eggs.  Man!
