Just so you all know, Hurricane has migrated.  Rose and I saw her on Sunday, Oct 4th.....haven't seen her since then. I hope she has a safe flight there and back to wherever she goes on her migration.  :)

It's going to be a long, cold winter! :(

I haven't gone back to check but from your recollection RCF, is there a pattern in who leaves first between Brooklyn and Hurricane?

From what we have seen, Brooklyn leaves about a week before Hurricane and she was still there today.  :)

Hurricane is still here! The weather has been fairly nice so that may be why she is still here. I do seem to recall it being much colder last year because she left around October 1st.  I haven't seen Brooklyn since the last time I posted. Gingerlee was the last person to see him.....that I know of anyway.

Here she is on the west light, me looking way up from the tiny parking lot on the south side.

Sorry, but the birds were on the lights of the clock tower, not the antennas

I was in Brandon on this past weekend & was able to get some shots of the birds.  Not as good as yours RCF as I couldn't get a good close up of either one of them & Hurricane kept hiding her head while I was there.  Think it was her by the colouring on the breast.  Then this morning both of them were on the antennas of the building.  Glad I got a chance to see them though.

Nice to see a pair still around!  They look to be in great condition too - well rested for their next big challenge (migration).

And yes, it does look like peregrine migration is in full swing - there have been peregrine counts at pretty much every migration site south of us for the last week.

Hope Brooklyn & Hurricane hang around a bit longer for you to enjoy RCF!

How wonderful it must be for you to continue to see these two every day, morning and afternoon, as the season grows later.

Just thought everyone would like to know that both Hurricane and Brooklyn are still here.  I see them every day, morning and afternoon.  I haven't seen a chick since August 27th, so hoping they have a safe migration.

I'm happy you were able to spot all four chicks RCF. Thank you for the updates and beautiful photos. :)

I see there are several nearby sitting areas where the falcons can pose for you, and these chicks were most accommodating!

All four chicks seem to be doing well here. I don't always see all four at once but on the Tuesday July 28th I saw all four kids flying in and around the McKenzie and Scotia buildings playing chase and tag. They are always lots of fun to watch.  8)  ;D

Armstrong was the first to fledge, then Ellington, followed by Ella and then Nina was the last to fledge. The one male chick likes to hang out on an aerial on the west side of the Annex building. For the last few days I have seen the other three perching on the north and east window sills on the Scotia building.

This is from a block west of the McKenzie building. Hurricane is perched in her favorite spot on the communications tower. One of the boys likes to perch on an aerial on the annex building.

Any news on the Brandon chicks?  Have any fledged yet?

The two males have fledged and are flying very well. We watched them playing tag with each other yesterday morning. We saw all four this morning in the rain, two on each of the lower roof pillars.  These are some pics from the last few days.

Last report from RCF on the Birdcams Around the World forum was some photos on July 8th that showed the chicks on one of the walls but no news directly from RCF or on the BCAW forum if the chicks have fledged yet.

Also haven't heard from any of the folks at Conservation or any of the rehab organizations so hopefully, knock on wood, none of the chicks has fledged and crashed in the interim.

If I hear anything, I will be sure to post.

No reports yet but the Mckenzie seeds chicks should have just started or be just about to start fledging. Like usual the females aren't a great deal larger than their male siblings so they could join their brothers sooner rather than later or not depends on the individual birds of course  ;)

The McKenzie Seeds chicks appear to be about a week younger than the West Winnipeg and Logan chicks based on their development when we banded them.  But like their siblings from previous years, it didn't take them long to figure out how to get out of the rooftop nestbox and they have started to explore their rooftop playground a bit.  They will have at least a week until they start fledging though with a mix of boys and girls, it might take a bit longer - the boys may decide to wait a bit longer as their sisters, despite being smaller like their previous years' siblings, won't quite be ready to go as soon as their brothers.  We'll just have to wait and see - every family is different!

During a check today all four chicks were out of the box and roaming about on the roof though not far from the nestbox yet.  Still very white and fuzzy yet so won't be be fledging in the next couple of weeks.

So glad, TPC, that "spur of the moment" you were able to band the chicks.  It is too bad your real reason for being there did not work out.  Is there going to be a naming contest for the 4 chicks?  :D

That's a good question Jazzer, hadn't gotten that far yet what with work meetings out of town and bandings today.  Will figure out the logistics and let folks know.

we got the call that MTS would be able to meet us today about the connection and we took the chance that between RCF's observations and a couple of photos Conservation managed to take that the chicks would be old enough to band safely.  And though the real reason for our trip wasn't successful, we were able to band which given everyone's schedule at the moment was a stroke of good fortune.

I am disappointed that the banding took place with no notice to the forum.
I had planned to drive out to Brandon with friends to see the parents yell at the project members and to get some pictures.
What a great experience lost due to communication glitches.

There have been a number of disappointments this year unfortunately.  We lost Beau as the West Winnipeg resident male, we lost Ty and Paris as the Selkirk pair and we may have lost Paris' as a part of our wild population as we haven't heard what her prognosis is yet.  We were looking forward to a successful nest at the Radisson which of course didn't happen and we lost two eggs at West Winnipeg all due to the unseasonably cold weather.

And then though we managed to find an internet partner and it looked like we would finally be able to resurrect the McKenzie Seeds webcam, we were thwarted by a cable cut during demolition at McKenzie Seeds.  And then when we were all set to announce we would be banding the Brandon chicks on Saturday (tomorrow) we found that we needed to be in Brandon earlier.  And though we were disappointed we wouldn't be able to get the webcam working, we did find that the McKenzie Seeds chicks were old enough to band and doing so then saved us another trip when most of us had other things we should have been doing.  But what was fortuitous for us meant that we would disappoint long-time phanatic RCF who almost always makes the time to come out to watch the banding from the street.

Given that we are all volunteers who take time away from work and pay our own way when we travel to monitor and band the birds, being able to band the chicks on Tuesday and not make another trip four days later, was the right decision even though it, very regretfully, meant that the McKenzie Seeds peregrines' staunchest fan didn't have an opportunity to attend this year.  We started announcing bandings in advance so that folks wouldn't miss watching them live online on the FalconCam and it is nice to know folks still enjoy watching them.  Hopefully next year we will have bandings on the webcam again (and not just at the Radisson) and that way, no one will miss the  action, online, live or a bit of both.

TPC, was there a video made at the banding? Is so, will it be posted on Youtube?  ???

I'm afraid there wasn't - small technical issue with the camera. It is new and we bought it with making videos in mind as we have had problems converting video in the past so they could go on YouTube.  Think I have issue sorted now thanks to some very detailed instructions via Mr Google.

Hurricane and Brooklyn have two male chicks and two female chicks who look to be about 25 days old.  Like past years Hurricane'sand Brooklyn's chicks aren't particularly large (thank you Princess and Trey) so I would expect them to start to fledge in about two weeks based on past experience.

We had hoped to get the FalconCam operating here today but it wasn't to be.  MTS through their Future First philanthropy program had agreed to help us out with a connection but with the work necessary to get a line in place and our small window of opportunity (I.w., before the chicks fledge) it wasn't feasible so I will be talking with the program to see if they would be interested in helping us out next year instead.  No guarantees of course but keep your fingers crossed!

And RCF's sharp eye at the beginning of the month was bang on.  She spotted one of the adults with food and thought the delivery looked more like a chick meal than dinner for a hungry incubating adult and she was right looking at the age of the chicks. We weren't sure exactly what we would find - we got the call that MTS would be able to meet us today about the connection and we took the chance that between RCF's observations and a couple of photos Conservation managed to take that the chicks would be old enough to band safely.  And though the real reason for our trip wasn't successful, we were able to band which given everyone's schedule at the moment was a stroke of good fortune.

Dennis I'm sure will get his photos processed and posted as soon as he can.

I think I remember saying something about them having four chicks after you told me they only had three. It must have been hiding under the chick pile.  ;D

Here's one of them from today poking it's head up just so you can see it.

Big surprise for the NRO checking the nestbox for us - Hurricane and Brooklyn have four far and healthy chicks not three!  Way to go Hurricane & Brooklyn!!!  :o  ;D

On Tuesday I saw Hurricane on the edge of the nest box which made me wonder if the chicks were old enough to thermoregulate.  Today I am sure because both parents were either on the communications tower or perched at the bottom corner of the clock tower. So the chicks must be at least 9 to 11 days old.  ;D

I went to Brandon today and took some photos of Hurricane and Brooklyn doing a nest exchange when they were feeding the chicks.  :-*

There seems to be an impression from a couple of posts here that a webcam in Brandon is imminent ... that isn't precisely correct.

We have been working on finding a new partner for over a year now, but haven't been successful thus far.   As we have lost the Radisson nest, it would be especially nice to be able to get the McKenzie Seeds site back and running now, and that is what we are working on.  CBC has lots of other things they could be doing with the resources they are providing for the FalconCam but they are just as fond of the peregrines as we are so they are giving us time to see what we can pull off.

Sorry to be a kill-joy, I know how much everyone would very much like to watch one of our peregrine families, I just don't want folks to get their hopes too high.  Be hopeful, we are, just don't go crazy.  If we get a cam going, they go as crazy as you like :)

Very happy news. Hope to see everything on a cam. CBC, do you hear this phanatic?

Wonderful news! Here's hoping that the cam works out. I think I recall TPC telling us that CBC is willing, but that there is another party's involvement that is necessary. Fingers and talons crossed!

Yes, CBC has been great since we lost the Radisson nest.  They agreed to let the cams stay live while we work on getting a new feed if we can.
Fortunately, Princess and Smiley have been very active, and entertaining at the nest box for the last little while.

 8)    It is wonderful news!!!

We were there today just when they were doing a nest exchange.  Brooklyn went in the box and Hurricane perched on one of the posts of the communications tower where she preened for a bit. We then saw her eating on the northeast corner of the McKenzie building, maybe preparing lunch. We used to be able to go up to parkade but you have to pay now, so only free on the weekend and after 6 p.m. That is the best place to see in the nest box....Saturday is coming though!!   ;D

Just as an FYI, our best estimate is that Day 33 will be June 6th.  Given that it takes about 3 weeks to begin laying and Hurricane was first observed on April 11th by RCF.  We know that there were four eggs in the nest box on May 11 which means incubation had already begun.  RCF thinks she saw incubation behaviour about May 4th which if Hurricane wasn't being coy before April 11th and hiding from RCF, then May 4th for incubation would be very fast, even for Hurricane and Brooklyn who are usually fast.

So, if RCF's observation is correct, Day 33 is June 6th so we will start checking the nest box a couple of days earlier just in case Hurricane and Brooklyn met up on migration and are faster than any of us anticipate.  We will keep checking until all the eggs hatch.  That way we will be able to refine our hatch/incubation match after the fact and be sure of their ages for banding.

More news as I have it.  :)

Report from Brandon - all four eggs are right where they are supposed to be a) in the nestbox and b) under a parent.

All looks good.  Our best estimate for hatching is end of the first week in June (32-34 days incubation) but in case we are a couple of days off the start of incubation we are going start keeping a watch the end of May.

Great news RCF!
I think a lot of us are still in shock about the Wpg birds, but this is after all, the Manitoba Falcon Cam Forum (and abroad  ;D).

Wasn't there a cam at this site?
Maybe we could watch the happenings at Brandon...?

Fantastic idea Alli, spot on, way to  be proactive.

TPC  ????

It is a good idea and one we are working on.  Problem is that most internet service are not unlimited, there is a maximum amount of band width/data transfer and if you exceed it, it is prohibitively expensive, even with generous supporters.  So for us, partnerships are required.  Westman has again declined to partner with us on the internet connection again this year but we do perhaps have another iron in the fire and CBC has agreed to move the feed to the Brandon site if we can get the connection up and running.

More news as we have it ...

Will the camera be up at all this year in Brandon?

The camera equipment is already to go, still trying to get the internet connection worked out.  Keep your fingers crossed though!

Crossing fingers, toes, talons, wings, whatever it will take.  I hope you can get it to work out.  If it does, at least we'll get our fix of watching the little fluffballs as they hatch and their adventures.

Fortunately Brandon did not get the rain that Winnipeg received.  It was very windy here but no downpours, mostly light rain.  In a 24 hour period there was only 8 mls of rain and there had been none since last evening. The sun shone all day here but the wind was cool.

The key would be the lack of flooding, I'd think, and the ability to keep the eggs tucked snugly under a warm parent :)

Hurricane and Brooklyn are fortunately old hands at this parenting thing, and parenting in bad weather isn't new to them but still, their nestbox is open to the north and east which means they like the WW and Radisson birds were getting pelted by the wind and everything it carried with them.  I have been in contact with a contact in Brandon and I hope to be able to get an update early next week.  I'm sure RCF will be able to report if their behaviour seems normal to her for mid-way through incubation.  I'm optimistic though but will wait until reports come in before being too optimistic.

Four eggs confirmed for Hurricane and Brooklyn.  Because without a camera we couldn't confirm when the third egg was laid, we'll be keeping a closer eye on this site as we get closer to their estimated hatch date.

Thanks to MCWS for the assistance and RCF & her camera for keeping an eye on these two while we are cam-less.

Little excitement at McKenzie Seeds when a nest check was attempted this week - pigeons had found their way inside the building and because of where we have to get to to check the birds, it was a bit too hazardous for people and pigeons.  But we will be trying again and as soon as we have an egg count we will post it here!

We haven't been able to get a look at how many eggs Brooklyn and Hurricane have yet, but we hope to very soon!

It usually takes at least 3 weeks between return date and the date the first egg is laid.  Hurricane was first spotted on the 11th by RCF which means that May 2nd was 3 weeks from her arrival.  If she started laying at three weeks and laid at the regular interval, there should have laid her third egg and started incubating on May 5/6 and a fourth egg should be laid by tomorrow (May 8).  If they had four eggs before this time, then I suspect that Hurricane and Brooklyn were getting together earlier away from McKenzie Seeds - but they are very fast at laying eggs after they arrive home so it will be impossible to tell for sure unless they haven't laid their last egg yet.

Now Hurricane and Brooklyn often lay four eggs but they have never managed to raise more than 3 chicks past one week of age.  If they do have four eggs, fingers crossed for this year though - it is their six year together so it would nice for them to break their routine!

Given Hurricane returned on the 11th, I'm not expecting any eggs until the first week of May at least - sometimes they get them prepped in three weeks, mostly it is four, but these two can get work done fast, so we'll start checking the first week in May and keep folks informed.

Way To Go RCF!!! Two for two!  Well done indeed.   :D
And these two don't always cooperate this early in the season as I recall.

Hurricane is home! ;D

Even if I didn't manage to get her band I would have been pretty sure it was her because we weren't there five minutes and I caught them canoodling.
  ;D

Well done RCF catching his band number in flight!!  :D
  ;)

I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, he wasn't perched there very long after I spotted him.

I think Dennis will back me up on this one, catching the band when you don't have much time to get prepped "in case" he flies makes the shot an even better catch!  Bravo!  :D

Brooklyn arrived on April 6th, Hurricane on April 9th
Looks like they might/could repeat themselves this year ....

You know them both well enough to be pretty sure who was home but its great to have the confirmation, particularly with so many changes in the pair configurations in the last year!

Looking forward to your first photos of Hurricane when she arrives.  ;)

Good news that Brooklyn is back. I hope Hurricane will be "home" soon, too. Fingers and toes still crossed for the webcam this year.

1914h CDT

It has started to rain in West Winnipeg and the female at the box has decided to make it hard for anyone to get into her box.  She's moved out of the rain and into the box - another bird still flying past at semi-regular intervals ...

??? We have birds back in Brandon....Geez I thought I would know cause I have been looking diligently.  ???

Just wondering if there will be a live cam at the McKenzie Seeds site this year?

We hope so!  We've been working on a couple of options but nothing finalized yet!
Keep your fingers crossed.
