With the weather being so nice, we have been able to clean up the nestsites without mittens and mufflers this year.  Today was the Logan Territory and we had a visitor who watched us intently.  Think it was a male by the size.  If we had to guess, Hart or Smiley - Hart because it is his territory and it was (to me at least) a small male OR Smiley because he was the last bird in town last year - we last saw him in 2013 on November 7th.  Of course it could have been a total stranger but it seemed to know its way around some so likely either Smiley or Hart.  So some of you might be saying, why aren't you just looking at Dennis' photos ... well, it was a working trip so we just had a small pocket camera and a pair of medium range binoculars.  So now Wowzer to help Dennis and no Dennis to help out with an ID.  Hopefully we will get the internet connection back at the Radisson soon so I can check the recorder - we know someone visited the nestbox since we did our first cleaning visit earlier in the month.

2 pf's on the Brodie building letters this morning at about 11. A few stray birdie parts on the ground underneath!

Thanks for this BCF!  Can't say who it might be at this time of the year - that spot is popular, we have seen Radisson birds, West Winnipeg birds and "tourists" there at this time of the year.  But now that we know, we'll have to see if we can catch sight of a band or two.  That's how we caught sight of Luck (from Brandon), Beatrix (well, you know her), Smiley (you know him too) and of course Ty.  Given that 3 of the 4 returned later to nest here "tourists" are always welcome and it does provide us with a little fun at the end of the nesting season.  We do know that Beatrix is still around and I'm pretty sure Smiley was our CTV traffic cam visitor so either of them could be there.  West Wpg cam is still up and running and I catch sight of Beatrix periodically but we are having some problems with the connection to the Radisson that we are hoping to fix this week.  That might help us to confirm who is still in town and who might be visiting (or not visiting) the Brodie building.

The last few days both Hart and Joli have been hanging out on the Brodie letters.
Others have seen at least two of the chicks in the last week.

The Logan chicks (Pip, Will, Squeak & Tory) all appear to be doing well though it is tough to keep track of them all in the area around the nestbox, but Joli and Hart are still around and the kids are seen off and on and we haven't had any reports, so fingers crossed they are doing as well as last year's chicks!

It looks like at least one more chick has fledged - one of the females.  Yesterday got a call about and "injured" bird and went down to check it out.  Bird was fine, just perched on a fence out of the way.  I decided to see if I could get close to it - either to retrieve it or for it to fly.  She showed me her band (yellow tape) so I knew it was Tory and she flew just fine.  Gained some altitude, aborted a landing on a tree branch and off she went to another rooftop nearby.  Check to make sure she was fine, and she was and she had lots of options and space for her next hop and that was all there was to do for her :)

No calls since, so assume all is fine because "no news is good news" ...  ;)

Reports from the Logan site today is that the first of the chicks has fledged and has been mastering the building to building hop!  This is excellent.  These chicks all appear to have hatched within about 48 hours of each other so they are only 39/40 days old - not too young for the males or females and none of them are very large so hopefully they will do as well as their half-siblings last year!

The Logan chicks are getting stronger - they have been hopping up on the wall around their nestsite but they have a week or more before they are ready to go.  Looking at notes from last year, they are doing exactly what their older sibs did - lots of up/down and running around.  Hopefully they will do as well as their cousins out in Brandon seem to be doing!

We banded the Logan chicks today...

So glad to hear that you were finally able to band the Logan chicks. With all the rain we've been having lately, I was beginning to wonder if you would be able to band them. Anyhoo, I'm also glad to hear that all 4 chicks survived the nasty rain storms we've had in the past few weeks. Joli & Hart deserve a medal!  :D

We banded the Logan chicks today - all very cute and noisy and fortunately not quite as blood-thirsty as some of their cousins!  Two males and two females, which seems to be a bit of a trend this year ...  Joli was around of course causing mayhem and chaos and Hart too, didn't have to wait for him to arrive, he was right where he was suppose to be.  Not quite as blood-thirsty as his predecessor Cowboy but it looks like Joli learned from her former mate and hopefully Hart will learn from her!  Lots of prey remains in the nestbox, fewer pigeons than last year, guess Hart prefers more wild game - looks like grebes are particularly appealing - found a few of their feet while we were retrieving/returning the chicks.

I am wondering about all our Manitoba chicks, how they all managed this horrid weather over the last few days?  Do we know anything for sure beyond what we can see on the Radisson cam?

All the chicks are old enough to get wet and with siblings they have extra sources of heat to work with when it's wet/cooler.  The West Wpg chicks look fine and the McKenzie Seeds chicks are half downy feathers / half flight feathers so they are well on their way.  Last check of the Logan chicks was after the last huge rainstorms last week and they looked good too, so they would have been a week older with this latest storm shouldn't have been a problem.

Special Weather Statement
updated by Environment Canada
at 4:54 PM CDT Sunday 29 June 2014.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Special Weather Statement for:
      City of Winnipeg
Steinbach - St. Adolphe - Dominion City - Vita - Richer
      Selkirk - Gimli - Stonewall - Woodlands - Eriksdale
Dugald - Beausejour - Grand Beach
Portage la Prairie - Headingley - Brunkild - Carman
      Morden - Winkler - Altona - Emerson - Morris
      Brandon - Carberry - Treherne
Killarney - Pilot Mound - Manitou.

Strong winds gusting to 80 km/h producing local damage.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

An unseasonably intense storm system centered northeast of the Dauphin area is producing strong westerly to southwest winds over southwest Manitoba and the Red River valley today. Winds gusting to 70 or 80 km/h are being reported with a peak gust to 96 km/h at Brandon Airport earlier this morning. These winds together with full tree foliage and saturated ground are leading to several reports of tree branches down along with local power outages. The winds are expected to stay strong into this evening before they start easing off overnight as the storm system weakens somewhat. Until then residents in the advisory area should be aware of the potential for further local tree damage and power outages today due to these strong winds.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.

Great news that at least 3 chicks, and probably all 4, made it through the terrible rains.  :)

Bit confused Sparkster.  Did you hear something about the chicks at this site?

Sorry, Moonstar.  I wrote quickly on my lunch break, not thinking that I could/should have done a copy & paste from the webcam page, or at least referred to TPC's report. I still have much to learn about posting.  :-[

thats okay Sparkster.  I realized this once I got home.  I never check the CBC page at work because I can't see the video and I don't think of TPC's reports there.

From Tracy's twitter feed:

Logan - finally managed to get a peak & though could only see 3 chicks, we think 4th just tucked into corner behind nestmates! #mbfalcons

Nuts  :-[ , thanks Birdnut for transferring this over ... I was having problems accessing the forum and then had to head back to work before I could get on and forgot later ...

I tried to find an app that would let my tweets scroll here as well but can't do it with this particular version of the forum software ... I think with the next version there might be one ...

I have only seen one bird at a time for the last week.
This morning it was Hart sitting up on top the building.
Yesterday it was Joli on her favourite antenne perch.

So here hoping when I see only one bird, the other is with the little ones.

Thanks for the update birdnut!  I’m thinking this indicates at least some life in the nest, so hoping all four are still well.

TPC, does this tupperware nest have drainage holes on the sides and bottom? Also I can’t remember if an enclosed box available here or not.

The tuppernest does have drainage holes just like all the other boxes - and 3 or more inches of gravel so way above any possible puddling on the roof.  And no, there isn't an enclosed box at this site.  We tried to get one installed end of last year and again this spring but building management still has concerns about the peregrines nesting here, so we do what we can as we can.  Last year Joli did very well in the rain with her three boys and the spot is pretty sheltered for a rooftop - not like West Winnipeg which has been getting hammered today.

Still trying to stay positive, but yesterday while water pooled in my yard, it was too much a reminder of the chicks we lost in previous years. Sure hope you find good news here TPC! Perhaps this spot being somehow sheltered provided help!

Really? Only 18+ mm of rain? I would have thought more. I have a bucket sitting on my back steps that has 4 inches of rain in it and I only live a couple of km south of there. Perhaps it is very regional than I thought it could be.

I think you may be right - a watering can at my place has very little, West Winnipeg had 12mm about 1300h and downtown was 18mm at the same time.  These stations all have precipitation gauges so they never record what I think poured on my place but it is at least a standard to gauge (no pun intended) by.

Just checked a weather station closer to the Logan territory and they are showing the same shift in the wind and the configuration of this site is that any winds from the south are completely blocked.  18.3mm of rain received at this location so as long as Joli, who is likely the biggest of our females right now, was able to keep all the kids under her and warm, they should be fine.  Won't know until tomorrow at the earliest though ....

All the best to Hart and Joli - they can only do their best against the elements!  We are hoping for the absolute best outcome!

Odd pairing....interesting, made to be, ie: fate?!  Jolicoeur actually means, "pretty heart" and she is paired with a very attractive male named Hart.

Dennis and I were shaking our heads over that when they first paired up.  Wouldn't have been any better if Beau and Joli were together , they would be "beautiful" and "pretty" - not inaccurate, they are both very attractive birds.  Same for Beatrix and Beau based on their spelling - we couldn't call them Bea and Beau that was just too twee.  Fortunately or serendipitously, Beatrix is the feminine latin for "voyager or traveler" which of course makes it the perfect name for an anatum peregrine and Beau is beautiful.  As for Jolicoeur, Coeur de Guerrier might be more accurate but not as attractive a name or easy to pronounce.  Hart has a bit more growing into his the phonetic spelling of his name but he seems to be making progress for one so young.

All the best to Hart and Joli - they can only do their best against the elements!  We are hoping for the absolute best outcome!

Odd pairing....interesting, made to be, ie: fate?!  Jolicoeur actually means, "pretty heart" and she is paired with a very attractive male named Hart.

Been raining all day (up to 20mm) and tomorrow is forecasted to rain all day again - another 20-30mm.
These chicks here are the youngest we have which means they are smaller but more vulnerable to wet/cold.
We will just have to wait until after the rain stops to see how Joli managed.
Keep your fingers crossed folks.

Joli and Hart from the Logan area are please to announce the arrival of their quadruplets. All appear to be doing well...keeping with tradition a party will take place to adorn the chicks with their jewellery in the next 21-25 days.

Thank you for doing all you can TPC, and good to know they are pretty sheltered for a rooftop. Hopefully, bldg management might have a change of mind though.

Similar places remain thrilled with peregrines nesting on their buildings!  ;)

I do remember that about Beatrix.  She's been a unique adventurous girl, that one.

Can't imagine them tasting very good!  Perhaps she was just catching them to entertain herself ???

Is Beatrix the PF who catches & eats those large water beetles? :-\ I forget what they are called.

Yes and Lethocerus americanus (giant water bugs)  :)

Hope no longer - we have four (finally) chicks for Joli & Hart.  Looks like they hatched Sunday/Monday...

That's fabulous news! :D Sounds as if Hart is learning the ropes. Is a 2 yr. old PF unusually young to be parenting chicks, TPC? ???

For a male, yes, particularly here in Manitoba, our males are usually older when they start.  Males on average don't start nesting at 3 or more.  And yes, that extra year can make a big difference  :)

All the birds are doing great, Joli is doing a great job and it seems Hart is holding up his end of the operation but not quite as well as Beau, Brooklyn and Smiley.  But he's young, only two whereas Beau and Brooklyn are 7 and Smiley is 5.

No chicks yet for Joli and Hart - maybe next week ...
They are currently on (as best we can estimate) Day 33 of incubation.  Last year, chicks hatched out on Day 34.

Right... hadn't thought about the skill of defending the nest. Just assumed that skill was innate in all fairly mature PF's.

Do you mean that Hart is not very good at incubating or is he not good at "bringing in the bacon," TPC? ???

In this particular case, he sucks at paying attention to who is getting too close to his mate and his offspring.  But it wasn't just that he wasn't paying attention, he almost missed our visit altogether.  And I don't think this is a new thing, Joli was velcroed to her eggs and didn't get off until Hart finally remembered that he is suppose to fly at the featherless bipedal thingies while making some kind of noise (did I mention he sucks at vocalizing too?).  When he finally remembered what his dad used to do, Joli finally made a noise and hopped off the nest.  Fortunately Dennis had a decent telephoto lens on his camera because we weren't that close and he managed to get a couple of shots of her and of the eggs before we departed.  If he hadn't turned up Joli wasn't in any kind of danger from us, but had it been something else, he was too inattentive to realize there was a threat.  This I do believe he will learn, Ivy was a bit slow in the beginning relying on Princess to show him everything.  But he made it up in stuffing his greedy little children until they were nigh to bursting - even the sainted Trey was not that overachieving a provider.  With luck, Hart will figure out what he's suppose to do to defend his young and he'll have other stellar hidden talents.  If one of those talents is that he learns from one year to the next, that will work as well.

We checked the nestbox on Friday and all was well - 4 eggs look great and Joli sure knows her job, but Hart  ::)  he really is a very very young dad.  No attention to detail.  We were only there for a few minutes, hoped to see how many eggs she had but wasn't going to disturb her more than we had to to find out - would be enough to know she was still incubating.  Hart almost didn't turn up before we left and when he did, pretty lacklustre performance but it was enough for Joli and that is what matters.  We may be being too hard on young Hart, Cowboy was an act nobody in the province, not even Jules in West Winnipeg could match.  But heck, even Ivy was more assertive and Ivy was not Trey or T-Rex.  Maybe once he has something to wiggly and vocal he will be upping his game, or maybe we just have to wait until next year.  On the other hand, if he isn't a Cowboy in defence but an Ivy in "chick-rearing" that would be okay too - Ivy's chicks were fat and happy and for future prospects, that might be a better test of fatherhood.  Particularly since Joli can almost her inner Cowboy when she needs to.

Any more news about eggs/inculating for Hart & Joli?

Haven't checked on them for awhile because of the cooler/wetter weather.  At our last visit, looks like they should hatch about a week after the Radisson/McKenzie Seeds.  We are hoping to get a look at them when the weather is a bit warmer/drier.  Joli tends to get off the nest when we turn up and then is sometimes a bit slow getting back on, I think because Hart is not nearly as aggressive as Cowboy was and she isn't sure he's doing enough to drive us off.  But that is just my impression so far in their relationship and we have been purposefully keeping a low profile so that she isn't torn between trying to be "mum" and "Cowboy".

I'll certainly post an update when I have one.  :)

Last year Cowboy spent alot of time perched on the smokestack antenna.

I have not seen any birdie there at all this year until today.

Cowboy back ? or Hart found his old perch.

Saw Joli twice today, so she is not sitting on the egg(s).
