The WW chicks are in a pile in the back of the nestbox with Beau on kid-sitting duty.  The chicks are a bit damp but they are in the driest part of the box.  Beau on the other hand is dry ... ooops, now he's gone and Beatrix is feeding the kids!

West Winnipeg Banding

We found that Beatrix and Beau have four chicks - 2 males and 2 females - when we banded them today.  The chicks are surprisingly close in size but their feet looked male/female.  So we measured them up and the feet told the tale - 2 males and 2 females.  One of the male chicks was so cute right up until the point where he tried to eat my hand  :D and all of them were vocal and just as independent as their aunts downtown!  Beatrix was definitely defending the nestsite but we aren't sure about Beau, we'll have to check Dennis' photos.  He does at times disappear, we assume to go hunting further afield.  Jules was such a dominant at the nestsite, he may have gotten used to being able to "shop" further away from home at times.  Fortunately, the rain held off until the chicks were all back in their box, Beatrix had settled down and we were on our way.

At 2030h was watching a feeding and it didn't take long for the kids to say "burp, had enough" and Beatrix kept trying to tempt them but they weren't interested.  Nice to see fat and happy chicks.

At 4:50 pm spotted Beatrix on the SW corner of the Diner. Then she took off and there were two falcons circling around. Beau contained to circle toward the north and Beatrix landed by the nest box.

Now at 8:30 it is pouring rain in WW.

No adults around at the moment...it's now perhaps nap time after a feeding ? One of the chicks just finished adding some touches to the "Poop Art" mural on the side wall.

Spotted both Beau and Beatrix this evening  ;D

Maybe because it's not raining?  ;)

And because the chicks don't need to be hovered over anymore - the four of them make a decent sized chick pile!  :o

At about 6 pm, Beatrix was standing in/by the nest box such that you could just see her head above the wall from a distance.

She spent all of yesterday doing that - almost like she wasn't going to take a chance that the rain was going to sneak in while she wasn't watching.  Chicks lay in piles all day - very cute.  And it looks like she might have inherited some of her grandfather's (Trey's) neat genes.  Her box has just one small black head sitting in the corner from when it was raining so hard.  No feathers or legs or anything.  Not like the Radisson - man o man, Smiley has got to learn to just bring the edible bits so the inedible bits don't collect.  Never seen the Radisson box this messy this early.

now I know where Radisson gets i from. messy nest box tha t is ;D ;D

Beatrix is in the box with the kids but isn't velcroed on them like she was on the weekend - shows what a few more days can do.  The chicks are tucked up against her breast, much the same as with Princess but Beatrix doesn't have them in the corner - think she has figured out where the driest spot is.  Beau is sitting just beside the nestbox, very much a family image, well, an out-of-focus family image because of the rain!  The chicks look fine if perhaps a bit damp.
