I'm missing a report on La Peregrina but Andamooka is hanging out in south Texas hunting along the coastal wetlands and hopping out to the oil platforms just offshore.  I'll have to have a look and see how close/far she is from South Padre which is a very hot spot for birds in the winter months ....

And Juliet is sticking to "her" spot in Iowa.  She was there last year so she knows what she is doing and being a year older she much more experienced.  Will be very interesting to see where she goes in the spring ....

I've requested information on La Peregrina and will post it when I get it ... she was the first of our chicks to bolt - she was in southern Mexico having just crossed the Gulf before any of her sibs or cousins had even seriously begun considering migrating last year!

May 1 - Nest Check

Nothing last time we visited but one egg for Beau and Beatrix as of today - and in the nestbox!!  Finally  :)
Next egg probably Friday, egg number three on Sunday or Monday and the incubation should start then.  Given that Beatrix is young, I think we should probably end up with 4 eggs here, but we'll have to wait and see.

And yes, we are hoping to put a camera on this location so that we can keep an eye on them without having to disturb them more than we have to.

Good to hear that egg laying has started. I'm so glad.

These two seem quite content and relaxed together. That is when Beau is not vigorously defending the territory from intruders (including that pair of geese yesterday).

Wonderful news that Beatrix & Beau are starting a family! :D And to think that Beatrix slid down a smoke stack a few years ago & survived to "go forth & multiply"!

Right Kinderchick!! - I forgot about that Smokestack episode!!! :D - Glad they're in a proper nest finally - I think it was Jules who liked to nest in terrible places for some reason.  :-\

Was in the West Winnipeg neighbourhood this afternoon. Around 4:00 PM, I spotted a PF perched on a letter on the south side of the building who looked to be enjoying a meal. At the same time, I spotted another PF perched on the north east corner of the building. So it seems that neither was on the eggs at the time. Was it warm enough this afternoon for the eggs to be left unattended? Seemed pretty chilly to me. :-\

Likely just waiting to lay number 3 - the timing would be right.  Usual interval between 1 and 2 is 48 hours, between 2 and 3 can be as much as 72 hours.  Thursday there was one egg, number two should have been Friday or Saturday so number 3 Monday or perhaps Tuesday and then incubation begins in earnest.

April 7, Beatrix had been hopping from one letter to the next, getting closer and closer to Beau when he flew away. Beatrix hopped down behind the letters and walked all the way to the other end of the sign. I think she was a lot hopeful and restless.

"You can't see me back here."

Yes, they are in the right nestbox.  In fact, it is the same nestbox Beau and Jules used very successfully in 2010 but in a different location from 2010.  It's basically the same design as the McKenzie Seeds box and about the same size.  Big difference is that it doesn't hang on the wall like McKenzie Seeds but rather it sits on a roof and the walls on the roof provide additional protection from the wind - this spot is windier than most but that's not necessarily a bad thing for peregrines.  Downtown the problem with wind is that the tall buildings create canyons that funnel the wind, in West Winnipeg it is much more open (it's mostly residential) so the buildings are lower and the wind blows above them.  Last year's chicks did very well keeping out of trouble, so fingers crossed that will be the same case this year.

How do you decide where to put a new nest box? ???

The birds tell us what buildings they find interesting or appealing.  We then look at the building to figure out if all we need to do is add a box to a spot that would be perfect for nesting or if we need to create a spot that would be perfect for nesting.  All of the West Winnipeg sites to-date are "created" to have nest appeal with a nestbox - without the box they technically couldn't nest there - no location, no gravel, no protection from wind or from rain and too open and vulnerable to predators.  We also factor in what type of building is it (commercial, residential), what other buildings are nearby - need places for the birds to perch, roost, eat, copulate, etc on.  We also look at what kind of food is nearby, how close or far to water, what kind of development, roads, etc, how close/far to the next territory ... you get the idea, lots of things to consider but it always starts with the birds and their preferences.

'Fraid not.  Don't want to disturb them as Beatrix is a new mom.  We know they have one at least, that it was in the nestbox and that given Beatrix's age, we assume there are at least 2 more.

All is very quiet at this site so they are definitely in the incubation groove.  Beau used to be impossible to spot after the first 10 days of incubation - haven't seen him in days - might just be my timing or it might be wonderful news.  I'm hoping for both!
: Re: West Winnipeg - 2014 / April & May
: dupre501 May 16, 2014, 09:39
In the past several visits to the site, my husband and I have seen Beau once.

We figured that incubation must be in full swing with one bird on the eggs and the other away hunting and/or getting away from it all for a short time.

Hopefully this weekend with warmer weather we may see the birds more as the eggs bask in the warmth. Assuming the nestbox gets sun. Does the nestbox get sun?

It does get sun, but not all day - if you can remember 2010, the box has the same orientation.  If the air is warm enough, they don't need to be in the sun, the warm air will be enough.  The box is sheltered, so even if there is a breeze or wind, they won't be affected by that.  The box is tucked down on the roof to protect them from the wind so we put a ledge along one side so the chicks when they want out of the box have two choices - the ramp onto the roof and on this ledge and from the ledge they can (if they want) hop up on the wall edge.  Why am I mentioning this now?  Because it seems that Beatrix likes to sit on this ledge and look out and over the edge of the roof whereas Beau and Jules have only ever sat on the wall facing in.  Different strokes for different birdies.  ;)

We were checking out the site yesterday afternoon/evening (6 o'clock-ish). Spotted Beatrix on the south side of the Diner in the sun. She then took off so we decided to swing around to check out the east side of the Diner, but before we got very far she was back on the south side of the Diner. Watched her for a couple of minutes and off she went again. This time I was able to see that she went off to check the nest box. So we set off to check out the nest box, when we got to a good vantage point she was sitting on the wall looking out at us. Still getting sun, but keeping a close eye on the eggs as well.

We checked the nestbox on Friday and both Beau and Beatrix looking be doing a good job there - 4 eggs, nice clean nestsite and well-defended by both of them in a really nice choreographed routine.  They rarely get disturbed at this site so they haven't had much opportunity to practice so yet another hint that these two could be a really good pair in the future if they manage to stick together in the future.  I'm always interested in how the pairs do each year, both with each other and their chicks, but I'm particularly interested in this pair - they just seem so right together, almost more so than Beau and Jules did, more a partnership than a dictatorship  ;D

1045h - Shift change, Beau is now incubating the eggs.  These two sure look like they have been doing for longer than 4 weeks!

Will be interesting to see how they do once the eggs hatch - first time for her but he's much more involved this year with the day-to-day stuff than he has been in the past - Jules used to velcroed to the kids except in the dark of the night, Beau used to handle graveyard shift when she'd let him.  There appears to be a much more equitable division of labour this year - day and night!

Unlike the nestbox at the Radisson where the afternoons are the warmest part of the day, the configuration of this box means that the by noon, most of the West Wpg nestbox will be shady and it is protected on 3 sides from the wind - which is good for the chicks because this is a very windy site.  Looks like Beatrix was on all night, Beau came in at 0615h and then she returned to sit on the wall beside him for an hour before she pushed him out again at 0738h just as the rising sun was starting to fill the nestbox.  It's 1055h now and where the eggs are is mostly out of the sun and she is standing over the eggs having a bit of a preen.  It's starting to cloudy over too, so not so much direct sunlight into the box.

It's an interesting name for the files for sure but here is my question to you  :) ... would the name really be "his"?  Or just that "he'd" been named after something that happened to his mother who is turning out to be a really neat peregrine?  Or should we keep the name for a peregrine that perhaps suits it better?

As interesting as Beatrix's adventure was, it wasn't the first time one of our peregrines has gone down a smokestack - not even the first time one has gone down that particular smokestack.  Fortunately that stack hasn't been much of a problem in recent years simply because there are so many other, higher buildings in the area now - at one time in the Project's history it was a pretty tall structure in that part of downtown Winnipeg.

Hmmm, you ask tough questions TPC!  Thought it was a good suggestion from gcg, but, guess we will have to wait and see. Perhaps one of the chicks might bring a well known name to mind, (possibly even Smokey the Bear!) Hahaha, you never know!

Regarding birds falling into smokestacks, this makes me shudder! I’m wondering why these buildings wouldn’t be required to have something installed over the top... such as a screen. Sad that some of our protected birds may have lost their lives this way.  :'(

I think, just think, that Beau and Beatrix have been purposefully screwing around with us ... in a good way ... not positive quite yet, but I'm pretty sure they have four chicks.  With the warmer weather and the chicks being larger and stronger, I'm pretty sure I saw 4 heads for a split second this morning.  Will have to check the recorder and then wait for tomorrow to check again - because of the positioning of the nestbox, the sun becomes a bit of a problem seeing into the nestbox later in the day.

Windy and raining harder out in West Winnipeg than it looks like at the Radisson.  Beatrix is tight on the chicks and seems pretty confident with what she is doing.  She's under the roof though the box is pretty much soaked except where she is, or rather under where she is.  She's pretty damp.

Big test for her skills ... we'll have to see how she does ...

Box dried out after about 5pm then the rain started again a couple of hours later.  Kids are squirming under mom but she's got them pretty clamped down under her.  Two meals this evening and they looked okay - meal after 1700h and another after 2000h.  Rain is suppose to taper off over night (not heavy downpours like today) and revised forecast for tomorrow is light rain all day with heavier periods early in the afternoon.  Suppose to end Monday.

Beau had the early shift this morning - very wet wee bird - more wee for being wet!

All 4 kids are fine and were very vigorously begging for food just after 0700h.  Beatrix (all nice and dry) took over shortly before 0730, got wet (still not as wet as Beau).  Just before 0900 she took off, he came about 0915 and fed the kids then tuck them under him as much as possible (wasn't raining much then), Beatrix came back at 0945 with more food and took over on the kids.  She's got them completely out of sight and has her face to the wall so the kids are as protected from the rain and breeze as they can be.

Just checked a nearby weather station and 12mm of rain has fallen since midnight, about 2mm/hour.  More rain to come though ...

Here's the link to Doppler Radar for southern Manitoba - http://www.accuweather.com/en/ca/manitoba/weather-radar

Winds are shifting to the south so the nestbox should be more protected from blowing rain so long as the shift isn't temporary.  Back corner of the box - walls and some gravel look drier so Beatrix and the kids may have an easier time this afternoon (fingers crossed).

There is enough rain/humidity now that all the box cams are starting to fog up some ....

Beatrix is clamped down on the chicks in the box - pretty sure not a drop of rain can get under or over her.  According to the Weather Network, rain is suppose to finish between 2100 and 2200h tonight.

Looking ahead more rain on Thursday and for what it is worth, a bit more next week on Monday and Tuesday.  Temperature trend however is good - warming to about 30C over the next two weeks.

Beatrix has been on and off the chicks a few times over the last hour - think she is looking for Beau to bring in dinner.  Hard to hunt in the rain though, no one flies when its raining.  All the chicks were sitting up bright eyed and alert so they look fine from what I can tell.  Beatrix is back on them now and/but I can't tell if it is raining at the box too wet.

All the chicks are fine at West Winnipeg.  They were lazing in the sun for most of the morning, no parent with them (likely on the corner out of sight).  Hard to count them because it really was on amorphous white chick pile.  Eventually the novelty of being parent-less, dry and "tanning" wore off and they decided to try their beaks at preening.  They are novices still but learning and it gave me the opportunity to count heads - one, two, three four.  ;D

She spent all of yesterday doing that - almost like she wasn't going to take a chance that the rain was going to sneak in while she wasn't watching.  Chicks lay in piles all day - very cute.  And it looks like she might have inherited some of her grandfather's (Trey's) neat genes.  Her box has just one small black head sitting in the corner from when it was raining so hard.  No feathers or legs or anything.  Not like the Radisson - man o man, Smiley has got to learn to just bring the edible bits so the inedible bits don't collect.  Never seen the Radisson box this messy this early.

Beatrix is in the box with the kids but isn't velcroed on them like she was on the weekend - shows what a few more days can do.  The chicks are tucked up against her breast, much the same as with Princess but Beatrix doesn't have them in the corner - think she has figured out where the driest spot is.  Beau is sitting just beside the nestbox, very much a family image, well, an out-of-focus family image because of the rain!  The chicks look fine if perhaps a bit damp.

West Winnipeg Banding

We found that Beatrix and Beau have four chicks - 2 males and 2 females - when we banded them today.  The chicks are surprisingly close in size but their feet looked male/female.  So we measured them up and the feet told the tale - 2 males and 2 females.  One of the male chicks was so cute right up until the point where he tried to eat my hand  :D and all of them were vocal and just as independent as their aunts downtown!  Beatrix was definitely defending the nestsite but we aren't sure about Beau, we'll have to check Dennis' photos.  He does at times disappear, we assume to go hunting further afield.  Jules was such a dominant at the nestsite, he may have gotten used to being able to "shop" further away from home at times.  Fortunately, the rain held off until the chicks were all back in their box, Beatrix had settled down and we were on our way.

The WW chicks are in a pile in the back of the nestbox with Beau on kid-sitting duty.  The chicks are a bit damp but they are in the driest part of the box.  Beau on the other hand is dry ... ooops, now he's gone and Beatrix is feeding the kids!

1842h - raining here in Winnipeg (yet again) - 22mm in the last 24 hours.

All the chicks in West Winnipeg are wet but are that isn't stopping them from trying to climb up on the inside box ledge to get to Beau who is sitting on the wall edge that surrounds the nestbox.  They aren't quite big enough to climb up nor strong enough to hop up, so unless someone gets very lucky, they are stuck in the box for a while long ... they will probably be able to do it by next weekend.

A little while ago, one of the male chicks hopped up out of the nestbox onto the ledge that we installed around the nestbox edge.  The ledge is lower than the wall around the edge of the roof and it provides the chicks and adults (Beatrix is quite a fan of the ledge) with a wide place to sit/lie down out of the wind where they can still see out and around.  There is also a small ramp attached to the ledge so that the chicks can do up/down from the box.  Because this site is so very windy, this gives the chicks the opportunity to explore and practice before they actually get up on the edge of the roof.  Design is a bit different but the same kind of set up we have been using at McKenzie Seeds.  The hope is that the chicks will be stronger and more prepared when they do actually fledge from the building.

As soon as one chick figures it out, others do too.  Have seen at least one of the male chicks and one of the female chicks get up on the ledge today.  Its possible they all have had a visit, will have to go back and see if I can tell what colour the tape is on their leg bands.

One of the chicks has figured out that he can sprawl on the box ledge and be a) away from his/her sibs (and their hot little bodies) and b) be up higher and therefore in a bit more breeze.  Unfortunately, tot is also figuring out that the ledge is in the sun more than the box is ...

Wind is picking up out here - chick on the ledge has his face into the wind which undoubtedly is more comfortable than being sheltered in the box.

Checked the recorder and at 1538h today, first chick (smallest male) slipped/jumped off the ledge down onto the roof. Second chick (a female) at 1611h - exactly the same place yelling at probably exactly the same adult.  Not a big deal, suspect it was Mom and they weren't paying attention to where they put their feet.  The drop is all of about 24 inches and there is a ramp they can use to get back in the box if they so desire (and can figure it out) but they should all be leaving shortly - they are 29/30 days old right now and the right age to start exploring their environment a bit more ...

They are protected from the wind on the roof by the walls around the edge, there is always shade under the box and one side or the other of the building is shaded as the sun goes overhead.  There is also a large overhang on the front of the building where the chicks can get out of the rain - they go under the nestbox as well, there is room for them to walk right underneath.  So basically, now they have to walk/waddle/flap a bit more to get where they want to go and to follow their parents around the roof begging for food.  Good exercise for them that will hopefully result in stronger, more experienced chicks when they finally get up on the roof edge and fledge.

Just checked from another angle and both the chicks are by the nestbox, one just beside, one underneath, both in the shade and both talking to Beatrix who is at the moment on the roof of the nestbox looking for/at something to the west.  Wind is definitely coming up now, hopefully it will cool it down a bit for the kids - those in the box and those out of it ...

Wind has definitely picked up out in West Winnipeg, Beau has had to hunker down a bit while standing on the roof of the nestbox so as not to get blown around.

And just so folks know, both of our little escapees from yesterday wandered back up the ramp and back into the nestbox by bedtime, first one at 1921h, second at 2042h and then it was everyone into a pile and lights out.  All still in the box this morning.

Everyone has been up on the ledge this morning except the largest or slowest to develop female.  She's been eyeing the jump, just hasn't made it yet.  Winds seem to be making hanging out in the box more appealing than yesterday (not surprised!!) - all the kids so far have been hanging out in the box with occasional stints on the ledge but no one has wandered back down the ramp or jumped from the ledge onto the roof.  Best still, none of the chicks have shown interest in the edge of the building like they did yesterday.  Now that they can get up/down from the box ledge, that seems to have filled their need to expand their horizons.

It is also interesting to see how they are becoming familiar with the wind ... this site is windier (more & stronger) than any of our other sites, Radisson included, so it is important for the chicks to be comfortable with the winds here so that it is one less thing they are spooked by when they fledge.  Example of how windy it is here right now, Beau is standing on the roof with his wings tucked against him and he just got blown diagonally the length of the nestbox - he caught himself no problem, but it is the kind of thing the chick will need to contend with.  Last years' chicks did very well, so hopefully growing up with these winds is the key.

I checked Environment Canada and the wind was recorded as NNW 25 gusting to 40 at 11:00. Although I’ve heard wind is stronger at heights and much worse if not sheltered, I’m curious how much worse it is at this site. Hang on little chicks! This is a little scary considering the gust that affected Beau today. I’m wondering (if compared to wind recorded at ground level), would it feel like double the strength way up there, or perhaps even higher?

: Re: West Winnipeg - 2014 / July
: The Peregrine Chick July 06, 2014, 23:23
Chicks totally ignored the wind, hung out in the nestbox or napped on the ledge flat on their bellies both of which meant they were out of the wind.  It was only Beau and Beatrix who had to battle the wind when they were sitting on the nestbox roof - it's a flat surface with nothing to hang on to.  The sat on the wall edge with their back to the wind and on the box ledge where the chicks jumped from and the winds didn't bother them as much.  Watching both West Winnipeg and Radisson, you can sure see more wind at WW than at the Radisson even though the Radisson is higher.

Thanks for explaining this TPC, although, since these parents sit on the nestbox roof at times, I imagine it won’t be long before their chicks try to join them!

Just wondering... with this being a very windy location, would it help to add something they can grip on around the edge of their nestbox roof? Perhaps similar to the little strips on the ramp in Brandon?

Just wondering... with this being a very windy location, would it help to add something they can grip on around the edge of their nestbox roof? Perhaps similar to the little strips on the ramp in Brandon?

We'll need to look at it - because the site is so windy we have to make sure whatever we put on, will stay on in all sorts of weather - even little things flying off a roof can cause damage to people, property, etc.  And to be fair, mostly the adults don't use the roof if it is windy, they sit on the roof walls, the box ledge, a couple of nearby supports, my observation was really just to illustrate how much stronger the wind was in WW than at the Radisson at that time.  Beau didn't even notice it, he just hopped back to where he wanted to be and aligned himself more aerodynamically in the wind and hey presto, no more problem with the wind.

As for the strips, not sure they will work in this case - remember that peregrines have long curved talons so when they stand on something, their talons make the tips of their "toes" upwards, so no like humans using strips to walk up.  The strips in Brandon was something we added but not really of much use in the end - the West Winnipeg chicks have a ramp that is on a much steeper incline and goes 2 or 3 times higher than the ramp into the Brandon box.  Didn't take the WW chicks more than about 10 minutes to figure out they could walk back into the nestbox once the first two went walkabout - no strips or treads or carpetting on that ramp, just plain wood.  But we will see what if anything might work and what/how we could keep it in place.

Thanks TPC, your explanation was very helpful. I see there is much to consider before proceeding with changes of any type.

Sorry I wasn’t clear, but initially when I read your post regarding Beau I knew he was just fine. My concern was for the safety of these birds during much higher winds, especially since the wind that caused Beau to lose his balance was only 25 gusting to 40 near ground level.

However I probably shouldn’t worry too much as it sounds like there are several other perches available within this setup, so these chicks may find something preferable to the top of their nesting box. Also, I suppose they might spend much of their time playing on the roof.

Your question was a good one Burdi, so no worries.   :)
And it would be nice if there was a one answer fits all sites but there isn't and the only way to figure out what could/does work best is to work through scenarios.

The wind is much lighter today and 3 of the kids are a wandering about on the roof, exploring under the nestbox and the area immediately around the box.  Beau is parked on the roof just keeping an eye on those still (1 came back to nap) in the box and the little wanderers.

All the kids have been active today - the two males have been checking out the roof near the nestbox while the smaller of the two girls was the first to go from the box ledge to the roof edge!  Ackkkk!  Only sat there for a moment with Beatrix then retreated back to the box and her siblings as they were all settling down for a nap in the shade.  Once they have the hop-to-the-ledge and the ramp worked out they are quite happy to relocate to the shade under the box for short periods of time before coming back up to see if there is anything more interesting going on "upstairs".

One of the chicks is curled up asleep on the roof where he can see Mom on the corner of the building, the other boy and the smaller girl have been going up/down the ramp almost as though they don't know where they want to be - nearer Mom or nearer their sib where he is very comfortably napping.  The bigger girl has lost a lot more of her white fluff in the last couple of days and is looking more like her siblings.

Stopped by today at 6:20 pm. Beatrix was on the east side of the Diner. Then found Beau hanging out by the nest box. Could see the tops of some wings flapping furiously at the nest box. The chicks must be growing so quickly.

Don't think I am going to watch this cam today ... WAY too stressful.  The little terrors have been all over the place - in the box, on the roof top, sometimes running up and down the ramp, just as often jumping off the box with their wings out!  Yesterday Belle (our largest female & homebody) finally figured out how to get up on the box ledge and holy cats has she been making for lost time!  The other female Bristol was the first to walk along the wall edge (gave me a heart attack) and she and Bishop (smallest of our males) showed the other two how to get up on the roof of the nestbox.  Beaumont looks to be the one who has been flapping the most though Bishop has a glint in his eye I just don't trust.  Little terrors I tell you!! At the moment only Belle is in the box everyone else is either in the shade under the box or out of camera range in the shade on the roof.  When the sun goes overhead they'll have to move again and we'll track them down - actually, they are pretty good about coming back to the nestbox and letting me count them a couple of times a day.

Since this box has more height (compared to Brandon) I’m thinking it might be helping the chicks gain wing strength quicker - and in turn, perhaps feel a little braver?

Actually the WW nestbox and the wall box at McKenzie Seeds are pretty much the same size and design.  Certainly the Brandon chicks when they fledge from the wall box do hop up on the roof but I think it is easier for the WW because they have a wide ledge around the box edge - they have a better/wider surface for hopping up/landing on.  The distance from the box ledge to the building roof is about the same as from the box ledge to the nestbox roof is about the same so between running up/down the ramp and jumping down from the ledge, the roof was just one more level for them to hop to.  The wall box at McKenzie Seeds doesn't have that many levels.  The roof top box at McKenzie Seeds does though - between the box (which also has a ramp) and the skylights the Brandon chicks have more places/things to practice hopping and flying on on the McKenzie Seeds roof before they are get up on the wall around the edge of the roof just in advance of fledging.  More things to practice on than WW.  Both work though and that is really all that matters!  :)

All the chicks were in the box last night to sleep then until about 0530h this morning when Beaumont took off onto the building roof and Bristol staked out her spot on the nestbox roof while Bishop tried to yak up a pellet and Belle finished off breakfast with mom.

Beatrix parked herself on a post on the roof after breakfast with Belle and then just before 0600h, Belle hopped off the box onto the roof to go join up with Beaumont and Bishop joined Bristol on the roof (the names are working out better than anticipated  ;))  With Beau watching intently, Bishop flew about 20 feet across the building roof from the box roof (figures our pilot is the first to get air under his wings).  Bristol took a few minutes longer and was doing a lot of practicing with her her tail gear before she jumped down from the box roof - she's further along than Belle but Belle is much more gung-ho, very little hesitation when she decides to do something it seems so far.

Kids remained out of the box until Beaumont checked out what Beatrix and Beau were "up to" at the nestbox around 0800h, then he returned for a private snack from Beatrix around 0900h leaving a sibling - I think Bristol - playing with some roofing fabric that has come loose (they all like playing with that stuff!) in a shady spot not far from the box.  Bishop and Belle/Bristol are out of camera view, likely in the shade (there is a lot of shade on this roof at all times of the day - nice feature).  Beaumont hopped down on the roof and ran off to Bishop followed by Bristol (?) a few minutes later.  Beatrix in the meantime finished off the snack and parked herself for kidsitting by the nestbox.

Since then, Belle every so often runs in and out of camera view, occasionally followed or following one of the boys - I'm inclined to think Beaumont but can't be sure.  The box has been empty for the last 1.5 hours with just Beatrix watching from the roof of the box.  The wind is starting to pick up and it is clouding over - will be interesting to see if the kids come back to the box as the winds come up (gusts in the area are already up to 40km/h)

Okay, now I remember, I don't like cam-chasing the chicks on this roof!!! I can see half of the roof, but not the other half and peregrine chicks do like to wander so it becomes a case of me poking napping chicks with my cursor so I can check the tape on their legs.  AARRGGHH.  Actually not too bad as the do tend to go where there is shade and that makes it a bit easier to discern colours even when you only see them for a second.  The Radisson girls are much more considerate ... they like to stand in front of the outer-box-cam.

Can only see 3 of the chicks at the moment ... Bristol & Belle for sure not sure who the boy is ...

Thought Bishop might have fledged this morning when I couldn't find him on the roof for hours.  Took a trip down to check and Beatrix was kakking at me and took a fly over so I thought he must have gone down and I was getting close.  After checking vegetation, concrete, building rooftops, you name it, she was still annoyed with me but no Bishop.  So went home, started stalking the chicks via camera and waiting for them to show me their colours - yellow - Belle is easy, she has the most white still on her, then red, Bristol has less white on her head than Beaumont which always confuses me when the run out of camera range.  Then blue, well, didn't actually see the blue as Beaumont was tucked up in a small hollow on a wall facing the wrong direction.  He did obligingly show me his band number though - either way will work.  And still no silver band with no tape.  No Bishop.  After checking everyone's bands again (I should mention that the kids are all spread out on the roof, they all find spots they like).  Then Bristol was missing and I had to sweep the whole roof again - Beaumont, check; Belle, check, Bristol with two heads, check; wait a minute, zoom, zoom, zoooooooom.  And there is Bristol and Bishop sitting side-by-side at the base of the ramp - there is a sandbag there to hold the bottom of the ramp in place so it doesn't get caught by the wind and all the kids love it to sit on and to nap on.  There is always one little that stresses you out more than the others ... this year at this site, it may be Bishop ...  ::)

Winds have come barrelling in on West Winnipeg, only dry spot seems to be under the nestbox - can't see the chicks because the cover on the camera is totally wet and the cam is shaking like crazy.  But no one is moving and no parents in sight - even they are hunkered down!

Airport has been reporting gusts up to 73km/h in the last 10 minutes and the temperature has dropped 8 degrees in the last 11 minutes.  Heavy rain in spurts, no hail but boomers periodically.

2005h

Bishop, Bristol and Beaumont are all sitting on the nestbox ledges and rooftop doing some preening and there are white feathers blowing everywhere!  Belle has decided that she wants some alone time and is on the other side of roof curled up on a cool spot out of the wind and out of the sun.  There is an adult with its back to me midway between the two camps, can't tell for sure who, but I think Beatrix ...

Belle is in the nestbox napping even though it is breezy.  One of the boys is across the roof out of the wind and mostly out of the rain - think it might be Bishop.  Beaumont and Bristol were with him but I think they decided to relocate to under the nestbox.

Went out today and spotted Beau on one corner of the building. Beatrix then flew over the nest box a few times, then landed on the corner kitty-corner from Beau, so they were watching the entire roof.

I downloaded and reviewed my pictures from the past few days and realized that I captured one of the chicks with Beau on the wall on July 10 at 6:45 pm.

All the kids have been tucked down for the last little while but all near the nestbox - two on the ledge on the box, two on the roof on a little pile of roofing fabric (they always like roofing fabric).  The winds here are gusting to 50km/h and this little band seem to be pretty wind savvy and that this is not something they want to play around in.  They are 38 days old today, so old enough for the boys but they don't look like they are quite ready to bolt yet - at the moment there is a boy and a girl in each of the two piles, so they are still a pretty tight group - they were all in the box last night in a chick pile - cute when they are this old, but not surprising given how cold it was!

Anywho, I think we may have a couple more days before the boys fly but if the weather improves Bishop & Beaumont (who has already been running the wall edge) may prove me wrong.  Belle isn't going to go for awhile and Bristol is hard to gauge, she's further along than Belle and adventurous so we'll just have to see.

Bishop just made a fly/hop from the box to the top of the camera - one gust of wind while he was airborne and he would have been fledging whether that was intent or not!!  He's back on the box ledge now ... probably given the others ideas now ...

: Re: West Winnipeg - 2014 / July
: The Peregrine Chick July 15, 2014, 11:17
So far these guys are going very well - youngest is 39 days old at the moment so the boys are old enough and the girls are nearly so.  The longer they hang out and practice on the roof the stronger they will be when they fledge (accidentally or not) which will make it easier for them to avoid all but the most unavoidable accidents - or so we have to hope.

The kids have been wingercizing but not excessively and even the boys don't seem up to full strength yet, so might be a couple more days.  The nice weather should get them more interested in fledging though so we'll have to see what the next few days hold ...

The little Bs have been fun today - well, more fun for them than for us  ::)  There are sections on the roof we can't see and that is where they wanted to hang out so they were all together in the morning then everyone but Belle disappeared only to reappear 10 hours later, then they disappeared again and reappeared just in time to go to bed.  Little terrors.

Went out and spent about 2 hours watching these guys. Beatrix was on site but away from the chicks the whole time. Beau was with the chicks, then would take off and come back 10 min later with food, then take off again for 15 min.

Spotted 3 chicks on the wall and at times one looked like it was thinking of taking off, then didn't. Wow, knucklebiting for sure.

Was out for dinner with a friend in West Winnipeg this evening. Did a little PF watching. Saw 3 of the chicks perched on the northwest corner of the building for quite awhile. Did see one chick doing a bit of "wingersizing" but no fledging tonight. Also saw an adult doing a few fly-abouts. Wondered if Beau was trying to entice the boys into fledging? Might have been there around the same time as you, dupre, but didn't see you.

Three of the kids are at the nestbox at the moment - two eating (one in the box, other at bottom of ramp).  Belle is on the roof of the box and not begging for food so she had something earlier.  Not sure who the ramp eater is but it is one of the boys - think it might be Bishop but can't really see his band.  Bird eating in the box is Bristol by the size.

My husband and I went out in the afternoon and spent a couple of hours. Spotted one chick on the west wall about halfway down. He wasn't there long. So we decided to go home, feed the cats and pack a picnic supper. Headed back out at 5:30 pm. Again, one chick on the west wall, so we decided to pack up. On the way to the car we could hear some calling so we turned around real quick to spot an adult coming in to bring food. Sigh, food was dropped by the nest box and all birds disappeared, so we continued to the car. Packed up our lawn chairs, noting that Beau was on a corner and a couple of chicks were on a different corner.

Headed round to the passenger side of the car, lots of calling going on so I glanced back one last time to see two birds in the air, one was a chick. The chick landed on the higher center portion of the building, it was 7 p.m. Now I am no longer sure which bird is on the corner, doesn't look like Beau anymore, the end of the tail feathers are light.

I pulled out my camera again and watched the chick in the center of the building, sure enough 5 min later at 7:05 there was more flying. Now my camera is brand new, delivered to my house late yesterday afternoon, and it is much more responsive than my previous camera. I was able to capture several  shots in flight. The chick then landed at the nestbox, shortly followed by the other bird (I think Beatrix).

We can confirm at least 2 more fledges this morning - well Dennis can, he's the one who was up way too early and watched them go.  One of which could be Dupre's from last night can't be sure as it was out of camera range.  Chick came back though because they were all in the nestbox way before dawn this morning.  An hour later they were all off on their morning romps and then three were back at the box = Beaumont, Bishop & Belle.  Watch Beaumont and Bishop both take off and return a couple of times this morning and they were doing very well with the winds which have been very brisk but constant.

Dennis and I were out checking to see if we could see where our two/three fledges had gotten to and we found the two adults at the nestsite with three chicks for sure - fourth could have been elsewhere on the roof.  Two of those chicks have fledged - one was back on the nestbox with Belle, the other up on the high rooftop where Dupre saw a chick last night.

Went back and checked the recordings and our first fledge, if out first fledge was the one who returned to the nestbox at 1905h last night, was Bishop.  Figures, he was the first to get up on the ledge, then onto the wall, then onto the camera (Bristol was the first to the nestbox roof though) and he was the first to get some air flying from the nestbox roof to the building roof sometime in the last week.

Still haven't figured out where Bristol goes, but she's been doing that since they figured out how to get in/out of the nestbox ...
: Re: West Winnipeg - 2014 / July
: The Peregrine Chick July 20, 2014, 17:31
By no means positive but I think Belle has fledged ... Bristol was on the roof of the nestbox in the wind and suddenly a bird appeared and it almost seem as though they had hopped over from the camera mount (they like to sit on there) but a couple of minutes later, wings went out, bird went straight up (no flapping) and then came down and landed perfectly (like a Harrier jump jet) then it did it again.  Had a light coloured band so either Bishop or Belle but this bird looked to be about the same size as the bird on the roof who I'm pretty sure has red on its band though the light is a bit of a problem right now.  Could be Beaumont on the roof (blue on band) and Bishop but Beaumont has fledged and this bird just seems to be a bit too hesitant for a chick that has fledged and come back in the same day.  Hopefully chick will come a bit closer to the edge of the box and I'll get a better look at the colour - will confirm two fledges with one colour if they do!

Yup, it is Bristol and at the moment she is running down the wall yelling at her father who is perched at the corner ... wind gust and she got swept just out of camera view.  Can't find her but it looked like she was swept onto the roof, not off of the roof.  Scanning around the roof (can only see 1/2), I found Belle, not sure where she came from ... so have seen both the girls in the last few minutes ... holy cats, have a convention now ... Belle for sure and two others - Bristol I assume and one of the boys ... going to zoom in for band colours ...

Ahhh, there is an ex-white bird under those three teen-age peregrines.  Not sure if a gull or a pale coloured pigeon.  Beaumont for sure (he was very cooperative) ... oops, now a three-way tug-o-war over the remains of the meal ... other two chicks not showing me their colours ...

Chicks all together last night, all night.  They hung around late this morning because of the rain and then they didn't (at least not on camera) take off rather they flew/ran to the shady side of the building and I haven't seen anyone but the parents nibbling on the remains of this morning's meals.

Just had Beatrix at the nest site, with 1 chick that she had brought food for a little while ago...then a 2nd. chick just came screaming in...so 2 chicks now back at the nest box.
Will have to wait and see if the other 2 show up  ???

I was at the Grace Hospital this afternoon and as I was leaving at about 4:30, I saw what I thought was a peregrine perched on the wall next to the lane leading to Emergency.  I was confused because the bird was a light gold colour but once I checked the Forum and found out that the chicks had fledged I realized that this was one of the chicks.  It seemed quite strong and confident as it flew off so I hope it made it back home OK.

Now have 3 chicks back in the nestbox and all facing North...perhaps it's the wind or perhaps they are waiting for # 4 to come screaming in  ???

At around 7:15, I saw one of the chicks on the wall, gearing up for a short flight. S/he took off to the northwest, flapping madly in a circular path out and back to the building, and glided in for a landing somewhere on the roof.  8)  Beatrix and a napping chick were perched on the letters.

Sounds so sweet…and very obliging of all to return! I suppose they like the setup on their roof, and it certainly appears they enjoy the company of each other (at least for now). I would love to see them on a live cam. Although, the updates are all great, and sometimes we even get play-by-plays! :D

And they still enjoy each other - and they seem to understand time better than a lot of humans - again by 2155h all the kids were home at the nestbox.  Won't last for much longer, but nice, and amazing, to see while it does.

No plans for a public camera here - cameras are expensive and they mean that occupants/residents lose a lot of privacy so they aren't often popular which we can fully understand, having peregrines on your building isn't the easiest thing to live with (despite what we might think  ;)) and having a live webcam can make it a thousand times worse.  The Radisson is okay with it in part because it is a public space already and the peregrines have been there since 1988 (first successful nest in 1989) so they are very used to them.  McKenzie Seeds is unoccupied at the moment but the peregrines have been there since the early 1990s nesting, earlier than that we were releasing captive-bred chicks there so they too have a long familiarity with having peregrines on-the-roof.  No other site in the province is like that and with the explosion of the internet and all the benefits and problems it provides, public webcams are not something many folks jump at.  So it may be that updates and play-by-plays (when we can) are the best we can provide I'm afraid.  :)

The Bs had an early start this morning - but all I believe have been back on and off, alone and with others a couple times up so far this morning.  They are looking very comfortable and confident these days.

Last night all the kids got together for a pre-bedtime confab but it only lasted about a half hour before they all took off again.  By the size, looked like Belle and Bristol were the ones who came back to the nestbox to spend the night - the boys were probably nearby on the roof just out of camera range.  All the birds - adults and chicks - seem to prefer to hang out on the building at night (good for us!)

It has been a lot of fun watching these chicks over the past few day. They tend to hang out close together and often two or three birds can be spotted relatively close together. At one point 3 were flying and chasing each other, but I only captured two together in flight.

Wind is up in West Winnipeg - two of the chicks arrived and hung out for a few minutes around 2030h then took off again.  Beaumont arrived a few minutes ago and he tried to find a spot on the ledge to lie down out of the wind, but didn't seem to be able to find one, then he hopped into the box and that too was not what he was looking for.  Now he is back up on the ledge, back to the camera.  Bristol arrived and nibbled on Beaumont's tail from the ramp before hopping onto the wall edge for a last look around.  Beaumont has retired into the nestbox and Bristol is on the nestbox ledge just where Beaumont was a few minutes ago.  Now she's gone into the box to join him.  Maybe Belle and/or Bishop will join them yet ...

Shortly before 7 pm yesterday, we arrived to find Beatrix plus one chick sitting on the east sign (Chick 1). There must have been another chick on the roof 'cause it was being very vocal (Chick 2). We decided to move to try to see that chick. I then discovered that there was another chick on the neighboring building to the east (Chick 3).

That's when Chick 3 decided to take off and was carrying food. Well, Chick 2 launched off from somewhere on the WW building followed closely by Chick 1, they were both chasing Chick 3. What happened next was a lot of aerial acrobatics, with all three chick returning to the WW building. Beatrix watched and cocked her head, but didn't move from her perch.

Today we found 2 chicks hanging out on the Diner, one on the south sign and one on the east sign.

We went looking to see if we could find any others. Just as we were giving up, we could hear the falcons calling. So we turned around and zeroed in on 3 birds flying and chasing each other. I took a few pictures, but there wasn't much to look at. I was able to identify that one of the three was an adult (due to the whiteness of the chest), probably Beau as the head was so dark. These birds circled to the north and we lost sight of them. We are not sure if these were the same birds that were on the Diner or not.

Thanks for all of your wonderful photos Dupre! I almost always see one two or more birds at the diner when I pass by on my way to work around 8:00 - 8:30 in the morning. This morning one chick calmly surveying the situation from the letters on the south side. Earlier this week 2 (and maybe 3) having a game of chase around the building. Of course, viewed from my car I have no idea who is who, so it's great to read your reports and see your photos. I too will enjoy seeing them as long as I can.  :)

Came across either two adults and a juvie or two juvies and an adult today.  Had my camera (wonder of wonders) with me so snapped off a few pics even though I knew the light sucked and I don't have 1/20th of Dennis' skill or his steady hands.  Will check them out anyway and see if I can tell who it might be.  It was still within the West Winnipeg territory, so I assume it was 3 of the Bs (B juniors and B seniors), but stranger things have happened.  Likely all I'll see on my photos is a peregrine shaped blob on the corner of what is presumably a building  ::)

Yesterday morning we were headed out of the city at 6:45 am and spotted 3 birds, each on a different corner of the Diner.

This afternoon we went for a drive and spotted one lone chick on the Tower, it was Belle. A little later one of the adults came circling through. I'm not sure, it may have been Beatrix. It circled the Tower and then circled to the north (maybe a bit east, but mostly north). Belle showed no interest in following. A bit later she went to the Diner, but within just a few minutes she was chasing some bird east out of the territory. She returned quickly to the Tower. That's where she was when we left.

Not really interaction - I was photographing the chicks (lousy photos but fun to take nonetheless) playing tag and one of the adult kites flew by and neither the chicks nor Beau who was hanging out with them nor the kite paid any attention to one another.  Nice to see they don't have a problem with one another at this stage of our chicks' development!

Caught sight of two of the chicks - no idea who but they looked large so I'm happy to guess they were Belle and Bristol - playing fly-tag west of the B&B.  Might have been hunting dragonflies, I remember chicks about this age one year we had lots of grasshoppers catching them in mid-air at this time of the year.  And last year of course, Beatrix was a big hunter of giant water bugs when she visited in the autumn.

For a couple of days, when we went looking, we only found Beatrix on the Diner. But yesterday, was a successful day.

We found three of the chicks sitting together, pretty as you please. They were Bristol (red tape, on left), Belle (yellow tape, in middle), and one of the male chicks (not sure which one, the tape was just "dark"), when a helicopter came by. So... four birds in the picture.

A short while later Bristol was chased off her perch when Belle launcher herself in Bristol's direction. Both birds circled, then took off and we lost sight of them. The male seemed to be happy being left alone.
Bristol...                                                                      Belle...

I saw them last night, too, at about 7:30. I saw one on the southwest corner, but then lost sight of it. One was on the east P, and another joined it on the R. "R" made quite a few comments when s/he joined "P".  ;D They hopped on and off the letters a few times. I learned from a much earlier post of Dupre's that they sometimes "hide" behind the letters, so I watched carefully. It was great to see them.  8)

Got home from work about 5:30 pm, headed out again right away to see if I could find the peregrine chicks before it rained. When I left the rain gauge was empty and a few rain drops were just starting to fall. By the time we get to the usual spot, its raining harder. We did see three, two were on the NW corner and one came flying in. Then they all disappeared behind the wall to seek shelter. Through the windshield between wiper strokes I managed to get this picture.

Then it was raining too hard to see so we came home. At 6 pm, the streets were raging rivers and the rain gauge... 2 3/4 inches. And it is still raining. :o

Dupre:  Have you seen all four chicks together lately, or just three? I hate to even think this, but am wondering if one is MIA.

Sparkster: I can confirm that I saw all four at the beginning of August. But as TPC always says "no news is good news". Chicks don't always hang out together. What I have seen is the two girls hanging out together, and sometimes a third chick joins them. That third chick may not always be the same one. I'm not worried about what I see. Usually, if I do see three chick, then I don't see any adults. I like to think that one of the boys is too busy hanging out with dad to play with the other kids.

One of the chicks calling but no one responded at the B&B yesterday about mid-day.  Today between 1100h and noon, Beatrix was visiting the nestbox for about 40 minutes then shortly after she left, one of the kids - Bishop I think though the rain made it tough to be sure - turned up and hung out for about 10 minutes.

1353h - Beatrix and Beau have been renewing their pair bond today ... one or the other has been in the box pretty much all the time since 0700h.  At the moment the light is shining so I can't tell who for sure, but sure looks like Beau inside the box in the shade.

At about 3:30, we found both Beau and Beatrix hanging out at the Diner, no sign of the chicks. It started with Beau on the last letter of the east sign busy defeathering something he caught. While he was doing this Beatrix was preening on a letter about halfway down the sign. Beau flew around to the north wall and Beatrix took his place on the last letter, where she dined on Beau's offering. I concur with TPC, definate pair bonding activities going on.

Beau...                                                                        Beatrix...

Beau...                                                                        Beatrix...

Nice to hear news about somebirdies this weekend! Now that the parents are back around the nest, I guess this is a sign that the chicks will all soon be gone? What a short season!  :(

Beatrix is back sitting on the box ledge napping half-heartedly in the weak morning sun ...

This afternoon as I was travelling home I swung by the B&B on an errand and spotted two peregrines diving and soaring around the building. So I rushed home to collect my camera and my husband. When we returned we were able to find 3 chicks there, looked like they were settling in for rain. But we only got a bit of a drizzle.

My husband and I decided to try our luck at the Diner as well. As we approached I thought I saw two chasing each other on the other side of the building, but when we got there, there were none to be found. Since we had some errands in this area we thought we would try our luck again later. We completed our errands and could find nothing at the Diner, so we headed to the tower, at first I thought we had no luck, but I soon discovered that Beau was a sneaky Pete and had found a new perch on the Tower. There was some recent work done on the Tower, and it has at least one new place of interest for Beau. While we watched him he took off to the north and intercepted another peregrine. The two then headed to the Diner. By the time we got there, only Beau could be seen on the NW corner, this was about 7:20 pm. Maybe the other one went into the nest box?

Before going home for the evening, we swung by the B&B again and confirmed there were still 3 birds there.

We spotted 5 birds today. That is a good day at this time of year!

So yesterday we went looking for peregrines between 6 and 7 pm and had great success.

First we went to the Diner and found Beatrix sitting on top of the south wall. Then another flew in and chased her from her perch. Then a great chase with many aerial acrobats followed. The two were quickly joined by three more. After a few moments two flew west and I lost sight of the others. Shortly after, Beatrix returned to the Diner.

We decided to check out the B&B and found three playing in this area. I spotted one with red tape (Bristol) land on a neighboring building. Then the other two landed there as well. Very shortly two took off, there was a female chasing a male. The male finally landed on a wall, where I think he was safe from being knocked off.

The following photos:
1. Larger female chasing smaller male
2. She almost got him (good thing it is play)
3. Chase continues
4. He lands
5. Don't think she can get me here.

Ditto! It is great to see and hear they are doing well and having fun! I thought they were on their way south.

This was a very nice sequence of captioned photos, dupre.
I love seeing the birds against your blue, blue sky!

Thanks everyone!

The last few days have been quieter.

Saturday, we went out about 2:30 pm and found only Beau at the Diner.
Sunday, we went out about 3:30 pm and found Beatrix at the Diner, and two chicks perched on the north side of the B&B.
Monday, about 6 pm we found Beau, Beatrix and one chick sitting on the south sign of the Diner.

I am thinking that this cold weather might send them on their way south!  :P

Last night, during rush hour on Route 90 (which is very very congested with construction at the moment) one of the adults was on the south side sign of the Diner.  Nice to see but after an eternity on the road I can only guess that it was Beau based on what I could see of the size of the bird on the "e".

Yesterday, about 6 pm.. we found Beau and Beatrix on the south sign of the Diner, then we found one chick at the B&B.

Yesterday evening we found Beatrix on the Diner and one chick perched on the north side of the B&B.

I also had a chance to review my photos from the day before (Sept 10) and the chick at the B&B had red tape on it's leg (Bristol).

Late this afternoon, Beatrix and one chick were both on the east sign of the Diner.

This evening, looks like Beatrix on the south side of Diner.

I saw that bird as well, Dupre, sitting on the letter "O".  I never know who it is...I'm just thrilled to see him/her!

Two mornings ago, I saw a bird on the NW corner of the diner and cheered as I drove by!  Season's not over ;D

Susha, I have a little help from my camera. I can see much better with it, better than I can with binoculars. Beau has such a dark head that he is easy to identify. If I see an adult (white breast), a bit large (female) with a mylar bar on the cheek, I do sort of assume it is Beatrix.

Today at 6:00ish, there were two adults on the south sign of the Diner. One was Beau, the other looked like Beatrix.

Yesterday evening, we spotted two birds on the Tower. As we approached I saw one take off after prey, so when we arrived there was only one left. Looked like a larger adult that was left on the Tower, so I am assuming Beatrix. I assume Beau was the one we saw take off.

I saw one bird last evening, in the rain, at around 6:00 p.m. on the east side of the building above the letters. It was a "drive-by" with no binoculars, so could not tell who it was.

Yesterday we spotted two peregrines on the north wall of the B&B at about 5:30 p.m. They were turned toward the wall, so we couldn't see enough of the breast to determine if they were white or golden.

Today at 5:30 p.m. we found a falcon on the north wall of the B&B, dark head, looked like Beau. We looked around to see if we could find any others and spotted one on the Tower.

About 4:30 pm today, Beau was on the south sign of the Diner, and another was on the east sign, perhaps Beatrix.
