Hi Tracy,

I was wondering if at the banding of the Brandon chicks, would they would be placed back in the nest box or left on the lower roof.

Not sure ... we haven't had any chicks injured or lost at fledging in the last few years, probably because they have more space to exercise more fully and objects (surrounding walls and skylights) to practice flying up to and between before they actual fledge.  They don't have those same opportunities when they fledge from the wall box.

Nice to hear about the chicks.  I guess we won't have a camera set up for Brandon.   

Unfortunately, not likely this year just because it always takes a whack of scheduling to get cam stuff up and running.  But that just gives us more time to work on getting the cam back for next year.

Thanks Rose ... didn't include the Zeus year in the list simply because pairs reproduce differently and even though Zeus was much older he and Hurricane successfully produced 4 chicks.  Brooklyn and Hurricane are both young and the same age, yet their egg success isn't so good.  Having said that, since Zeus and Hurricane were only together for one year, it doesn't hurt to add them to the discussion.

This is Brooklyn and Hurricane's fifth year together and though they usually lay 4 eggs only once have they all hatched.

• 2010 - 4 eggs, 2 hatched, 2 chicks fledged - Mac & Kenzie
• 2011 - 4 eggs, 4 hatched, 2 chicks fledged - Rain & Rosser
• 2012 - 4 eggs, 3 hatched, 3 chicks fledged - Sol, Hunter & Maya
• 2013 - 4 eggs, 3 hatched, 3 chicks fledged - Bogart, Spencer & Kelly
• 2014 - 4 eggs, 3 hatched so far ....

 

In 2009 (Hurricane and Zeus) there were 4 eggs all hatched, all fledged and all migrated. Their names were
Fate- male
Luck-female
Kismet-female
Karma-female

Still only 3 chicks at McKenzie Seeds.  We'll see if the last egg hatches over the weekend.
