I believe Hurricane has migrated, I haven't seen her for two days.  It was Wednesday that I saw her last, hope she has a safe trip there and back.

I didn't see Brooklyn yesterday or today so I think he has migrated.  Hurricane is still here though.  I took some photos of her from the parkade on Saturday.  I think she was doing the hokey - pokey up there on the McKenzie roof.

Maybe she was just showing off  ;D

Hurricane and Brooklyn are still around but I haven't seen any chicks here since August 29th. I hope they have a safe flight on their migration to wherever they go.  :)

Bon voyage to them all! I hope we hear about the chicks being at a nest box somewhere in the next couple of years.

In the past three weeks I have seen all three chicks.

RCF, This latest update has really brightened my day … I’m happy to know all the kids appear well, and wonderful to see how beautiful they’ve grown.

The colours in your photos are gorgeous!

Thank you so much. :D

In the past three weeks I have seen all three chicks.  I sometimes see two kids at home and then the next day I see only one or none.  On Thursday I saw George on the annex building, he was yelling or probably begging for food.  Yesterday Lindy was perched on the south light of the McKenzie bldg.  Sometimes I can't tell which boy I am seeing but for sure I saw Frankie on Aug 3rd.

Here are a few photo's of the chicks since they fledged.

George

I am still seeing all three kids here.  :)  After work today two of the kids were on two of the three louvered ledges on the Scotia building, Brooklyn was on the other one. The other kid was on the walkway between the McKenzie and the Annex building and Hurricane was perched on the west Scotia sign.

The chick that was on the walkway flew off to chase pigeons that congregate on the walls and window sills.  It wasn't long before it reappeared and flew over to where Brooklyn and the other two kids were perched.......no luck catching a pigeon that time.

Brooklyn flew off to the west and just after the chick went past Hurricane on the Scotia sign she also left leaving the two other chicks on the ledges. So everyone is accounted for and they all seem to be doing just fine.  ;D

I don't think I've thanked you RCF for all your input this year. I read, I appreciate and I forget to mention how fabulous it is to have such detailed reporting. :D

Doubly so since you were having to brave foul weather and rising flood waters!  :)

very well said! (agree with both of you)

I have been seeing our little peregrine family just about everyday.  I usually see all of them in the early morning and they seem to be hanging out close to home.  Just last week two of the kids were perched on one of the Cargill elevators two blocks west of the McKenzie bldg, Spencer hung out there last year too.  ;D

Friday afternoon Hurricane must have been giving a hunting lesson because one of the boys was yelling and chasing her.  She had a pigeon but she dropped it just as they flew between the McKenzie bldg and the Annex bldg.  It fell on the loading dock which is about one story.  I heard a thunk, sounded like something heavy hitting a metal roof and the pigeon is still there today.  I didn't see them all today just two kids and both parents but everybody seems to be doing quite fine here.  :)

Know RCF has been out of danger from most of the flooding and that water levels are dropping in Brandon so she might be involved in post-flood activities.  I'm sure that if the birds had run into problems, she would have posted, so definitely, no news is good news!  And remember, these chicks have been flying for a couple of weeks now - that usually puts them out of fledging danger, now comes the staying-out-of-danger-while-you-perfect-your-hunting-skills period.  ;)

6:45am

Looks like Lindy fledged, I saw her on the north wall of the mts building across the street, it's about four stories.  One of the boys was on the tower up above Lindy and the other was on the east ledge of the McKenzie roof. Both Brooklyn and Hurricane were also there this morning....the whole family was home.

3:30pm

After work all three kids were pretty much in the same places they were this morning except one of the boys was perched at the bottom of the clock tower.  Hurricane was on the louvered ledge on the north side of the Scotia building, I didn't see Brooklyn this afternoon.

Well, I guess George is no worse for wear after flying into the clock tower, he was on the mts tower across the street this afternoon.  :)  I saw Brooklyn, Hurricane and for sure two of the three chicks, which would be Lindy and George.  I may have seen Frankie but because both boys are flying and all over the place it's hard to say.  I don't think Lindy has fledged yet, she was up on the north wall doing quite a bit of wingersizing.  ;D

Sounds like these guys are doing very well - avoiding the bad weather and not fledging before they are fully baked!
Thanks for the reports RCF  :)

We went and checked on these three last evening.  We saw one chick huddled up close to the west side of the building on the north wall and a little later we saw one fly from the lower roof floor only to circle and then land on the north east parapet.  It didn't stay there long, it jumped down to the lower roof....I think Brooklyn had an evening snack.  ;D   Not much action going on but we were happy to see at least one or two chicks.

Thanks for the report RCF, given high water levels in the area, I'm sure it wasn't as straightforward as usual.  And from your description of your flying chick I think you may be right and at least one of your kids fledged a bit earlier.  It also sounds like the Brandon kids are doing very well so far, particularly given the weather the SW has had to deal with recently!

It came through Rapid City and was in and out in about ten minutes. The wind blew and it rained with a tiny bit of sleet sized hail and was gone.  Looking at blue sky now! :)

Same thing happened where we are in Winnipeg. Storm blew through with wicked winds & rain, but was over in about 20 mins.

Checked the radar and it looks as though Brandon only got the tail end of the current front - seems it dropped down from/through the Interlake to Winnipeg - it is long though - from the Ontario border (where it is quite wide) west to Brandon where it appears to end - but there is active weather in that "end"!  McKenzie Seeds chicks seem to be pretty good at getting out/staying out of harms way during these kinds of storms so going to assume that Frankie, George & Lindy will be like their older sibs and do the same!

I think one of the boys has been flying for at least couple of days already, so don't think yesterday was their first day.  ;)

We went to watch the chicks this evening.  Frankie and George were flying quite well this evening or so I thought.  George flew right into the clock tower head first and went down to the lower roof.  :o :(  We decided to stay a while longer to make sure he was okay and it wasn't very long after he was back up on the wall.  :)

Earlier one of the boys flew off the McKenzie building, made a circle around the mts tower and over to the Scotia building. He tried to land on the top ledge but just missed and was a bit lower so he turned around and flew to the very top roof of the McK bldg.  We didn't see Lindy until just before we left, so all three chicks were all present and accounted for.  :-*

RCF has been watching over the kids this evening and all was fine by the time she left for the evening.

Tomorrow's weather is suppose to be okay in the morning but t-storms and winds gusting to 70km/h in the afternoon.  If the kids decide to try flying again, they better try it in the morning or just tuck down and wait for Sunday when it is suppose to be a much nicer day!

Two have fledged!!

After work today there was one chick at the bottom of the clock tower and on the west side of the building there was one wandering back and forth on the McKenzie roof ledge where the gutter is.  :)

Yikes! Now the excitement begins for you, RCF! :D I'm guessing it's the boys, George & Frankie. ;)

That would explain it then!! Thanks TPC, but I won’t bother modifying now as you have already replied. Though now I’m curious - how long are options such as modify or delete actually available after each post?

Delete is never available to members - that's a moderator function only.  Modify I think is available for something like 15 or 30 minutes.  I don't have control over how long the modify function is available on a post.  As I recall, both of these functions are the way they are to ensure that the conversations on boards remain intact.

(FYI - I'll be moving these posts to the Forum board where they will be easier to find later)

Thanks TPC, but I actually wanted to modify my post (from july 9 at 20:38) since part was already answered by RCF, but I could not. The “modify” icon was definitely not there!

I’ve waited for a while and have checked a few of my posts under other headings (while logged on), but still the same. Please check into this as the modify icon has always been available before.

The modify button is only available for a limited amount of time after the original post is published.
Send me a pm and I can modify your post for you.

There is no mention of about how long you spent watching for the chicks or about how often you recently visited this site RCF, but hope to hear some good news soon!

Today you are in luck because I saw one chick on the north wall today.  He/she has that Mohawk look....a line of fluff on the top of it's head. It was just sitting up there watching the world go by with mom perched up above at the bottom of the clock tower.

Thank you so much for this good news RCF. It’s great to know you are in Brandon quite regularly, and take the time to check on them so often!

Now I’ll be looking forward to further good news. You’ve certainly cheered up my day...  and he/she sounds like a cutie! :D

I work in Brandon and see the peregrines pretty much everyday. I check on them before and after I go to work. There is no real fledge watch here, never has been. We go and watch and if we are lucky we may see one fledge as we have in the past. We have never rescued a chick here and according to Tracy this site is one of the safest places for the chicks to fledge.

It was just sitting up there watching the world go by with mom perched up above at the bottom of the clock tower.  I can't predict when they will be on the wall but they are probably more active morning and evening when it's not too hot.  I do not see any other people here watching the peregrines and never have except for Birdlover and she moved away. So not to worry somebody is watching and checking on them.   ;)

Unfortunately we are left to speculate and sometimes worry about what is actually happening here - without a camera. Hopefully Westman may reconsider, or perhaps another internet provider will offer.

The forum banner says these chicks were 35 days old yesterday and expected to fledge any day, so I assume they should be on the roof ledge already. Perhaps these chicks have chosen to take their time?

Wondering if anyone else has been out to check this site. Are there any further updates you haven’t had a chance to share with us TPC?

There is no mention of about how long you spent watching for the chicks or about how often you recently visited this site RCF, but hope to hear some good news soon!

The youngest of Hurricane's & Brooklyn's chicks is 35 days old today.
Since we have 2 males here & 1 female (a common mix with this pair),
I suspect they will start to fledge any day now!

I haven't seen any chicks on the wall yet, have only seen the parents.

I'm sorry we don't have a cam there this year, we used to be able to check the river when we spun the camera around.  Westman is probably kicking itself for pulling the plug on their internet connection to the building - they could have had the best view in town and a lot of traffic to their webcam from interested/concerned Brandonites (it is Brandonites isn't it?)

Flood picture from the Brandon Sun taken on Saturday July 5. You can see the McKenzie Seeds building in the background, showing that the peregrines here have an excellent view of the flooding going on.

I've set up the general Fledgewatch board for 2014.

If there are folks out in Brandon who would like to join others to fledgewatch, I would be happy to set up a separate private fledgewatch board just for McKenzie Seeds.  Just send me a PM.

Just like the Radisson fledgewatch board, this board would be "private" and would only be accessible to members who wish to coordinate schedules.  Who's going where and when and with whom, is information that is more personal than should be viewable by the public on an open forum in the Project's opinion, so a private board just for interested forum members.

Any observations during fledging will be posted on the regular nestsite boards.  If any observations are posted here by mistake they will automatically be moved to the correct board so that everyone may share.

Any questions, send me a PM.
Thanks!

Sure do hope RCF & Rose are okay.

Heard from RCF and she is high enough that she doesn't have any problems at the moment.
Rose too is in a higher part of town as I recall so should be okay as well.

TPC was interviewed on CBC radio early Sunday morning, burdi. If I recall, she mentioned that the Brandon chicks were placed back in their wall nest box this year, rather than in the roof top nest box.
Actually, we put the chicks back on the roof box not the wall box...

Sorry to relay the incorrect info, burdi & TPC. Goes to show how well I listen to the radio while laying in bed. Only half awake, I guess. :-[

Sure do miss the live cam here, and with so much rain I am thinking more about these chicks. Just wondering if they were placed back in the nest after banding, or, are they on the roof now?

Thank you for explaining the Brandon chicks were moved to the roof box TPC. I know you care very much about our birds, and trust you will always attempt to do what is best for them. :)

Actually, we put the chicks back on the roof box not the wall box.  They were only 24 days old at the time but were much further advanced than any of our other chicks at the same age (check out Dennis' photos when he posts them) and we were a bit concerned about putting them back in the wall box given the iffy weather and doing it on the ladder.  We were considering putting them in the roof box anyway, this just made the decision easier and safer.  Despite how close most of our nests are in age, I have no doubt the McKenzie Seeds chicks will fledge first, not only first, but earlier, just as they have done over the last few years.

Good thing you managed to band these Brandon chicks on Friday, TPC. I see a rainfall warning is still in effect (along with the weather statement), also (on CBC) I read that Brandon declared a state of emergency due to overland flooding.

Special Weather Statement
updated by Environment Canada
at 4:54 PM CDT Sunday 29 June 2014.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Special Weather Statement for:
      City of Winnipeg
Steinbach - St. Adolphe - Dominion City - Vita - Richer
      Selkirk - Gimli - Stonewall - Woodlands - Eriksdale
Dugald - Beausejour - Grand Beach
Portage la Prairie - Headingley - Brunkild - Carman
      Morden - Winkler - Altona - Emerson - Morris
      Brandon - Carberry - Treherne
Killarney - Pilot Mound - Manitou.

Strong winds gusting to 80 km/h producing local damage.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

An unseasonably intense storm system centered northeast of the Dauphin area is producing strong westerly to southwest winds over southwest Manitoba and the Red River valley today. Winds gusting to 70 or 80 km/h are being reported with a peak gust to 96 km/h at Brandon Airport earlier this morning. These winds together with full tree foliage and saturated ground are leading to several reports of tree branches down along with local power outages. The winds are expected to stay strong into this evening before they start easing off overnight as the storm system weakens somewhat. Until then residents in the advisory area should be aware of the potential for further local tree damage and power outages today due to these strong winds.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.

Please monitor the latest forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada at www.weatheroffice.gc.ca

As everyone knows, chick banding has started...and yes there will be a Brandon Gallery set up. I'm sure everyone is excited to see the birds/chicks since a live camera wasn't a go this year !

As we have spent more time on the road than at home driving and banding 3 locations in the last 2 day's it will take some time to do all the editing...so please be patient.

McKenzie Seeds Banding

Missed the foul weather in Brandon which was great, if there had been lightning, we would have had to call off the banding entirely.  Fortunately not the case today.  Hurricane and Brooklyn were their usual attentive selves and did a wonderful job defending their chicks.  Three chicks this year - two males and one female - all growing very very fast. We know they are 24/25 days old but they look a few days older, probably because they are smaller like all of Hurricane's and Brooklyn's kids at this age. Suspect they will all fledge quickly once they are of age.  The female was the most vocal and one of the male chicks was much more of a fighter than the other though they were all pretty feisty.  Cute chicks though.

Dennis took photos and hopefully the overcast skies didn't interfere with the lighting.  We have a new camera and hopefully the video worked - we are banding again tomorrow, so it will have to wait a couple of days.

Looking forward to the banding, though now concerned about the "special weather statement" issued by Environment Canada.  :-\
Pouring rain could be unsafe, especially at this Brandon site... I would think. Perhaps there will be a change of plans.

Was passing through Brandon on a road trip west with my sister yesterday. Stopped on the roof of the Town Centre parkade for a few minutes & was able to see some white fluffies  popping up out of the nest box. Also spotted an adult perched on the top right hand corner of the McKenzie Seed Bldg. :)

Hi Tracy.

Sorry for my tardiness in replying and thanks for your answer to my question a week ago about the banding.
I'm just wondering if there is an update regarding this.
Bccs

Yes there is  :) we will be banding the Radisson, McKenzie Seeds and West Winnipeg chicks at the end of this week.  We don't have an internet connection in Brandon so obviously we can't stream the McKenzie Seeds banding but the plan is to do so for the Radisson banding.  And yes there will be a name the chick contest for the two Radisson chicks.

Which day this week will you be coming to Brandon to band?  We might want to come and watch the parents dive bomb everyone. :)

Got lucky today...we just seem to get downtown at the right time!   ;D

Brooklyn showed up with a snack (the snack was a Sora Rail). Hurricane was hot on his heels to take it from him, she grabbed it and took it across the street to the communications tower to defeather it.  She flew over to the nest box and fed the chicks. We could only see two chicks while she was feeding and we were wondering where the other one was.  ???   After she left the third chick showed itself, thank goodness!!

Only seeing two at feed.

After mom left we see the three chicks.  ;D

Tracy, just wondering if you have dates picked for the bandings.

Not finalized yet - because we are two weeks later than usual we are having to find days when everyone involved is available - normally at this time in the process we are between banding and fledging and getting other work done.

Checked a weather station in Brandon and the weather looks a lot better there right now, no rain and 15C.
Winds are from the north so the chicks are a wee bit breezy but I'm sure Hurricane or Brooklyn is keeping them company.

The turkey vulture and eagle weren't that close to the nest just in the falcons territory. Hurricane and Brooklyn have chicks and probably any large bird flying above the McKenzie building is fair game to chase and warn off.  ;)

Hurricane chased off a turkey vulture this afternoon....didn't get any pics of that though.   :D   Just after that Brooklyn showed up with an afternoon snack and I watched a mid air food transfer between the two, Hurricane took it and fed the kids. Pretty soon the chicks will be big enough to poke their little heads up for us to see from the parkade or the parking lot east of the building, hopefully I will get some photos.  ;D  :-*

Got a report from the NRO today ... still just 3 chicks so unlikely after 7 days that the last egg will hatch.  They will check again later this week just in case though.

I don't ever want to have a fight with a peregrine falcon. They aren't afraid of anything, at any size!

Makes for terrific guardians though. ;)

We were up on the parkade this afternoon and watched an adult bald eagle receive Hurricane's wrath.  ;D  She stormed out of the nest box and across the lower roof to chase and attack the eagle. I saw her thump it a couple of times before it decided it was time to go. They were quite far away to the east but I managed to take a few photos.  Brooklyn in the meantime was on a Scotia building window ledge. Hurricane finally came back after a few minutes and perched on the tower across the street. She may have been picking eagle feathers out of her talons.  ;D   Then she flew back over to the nest box and Brooklyn perched at the bottom of the clock tower. We left after that.

Hi Tracy,

I was wondering if at the banding of the Brandon chicks, would they would be placed back in the nest box or left on the lower roof.

Not sure ... we haven't had any chicks injured or lost at fledging in the last few years, probably because they have more space to exercise more fully and objects (surrounding walls and skylights) to practice flying up to and between before they actual fledge.  They don't have those same opportunities when they fledge from the wall box.

I have watched other sites where the chicks have space to exercise more fully as you have said, and it certainly would seem to be a more beneficial for them than being stuck in the nest box or perched on the roof of it before they fledge. Might not be as a good a view but if it helps them why not?

I have to wonder that the kids might be able to fledge better from a higher up location - nestbox - than rather the flat roof where they have to jump up to be at a vantage point.
Is there a difference in advantage for the kids?

I've seen chicks fledge from the nest box all survived and didn't bomb out, they simply soared across to the tower or to the annex and next day were on the Scotia Towers. Didn't TPC say that Brandon was a safe place for fledging chicks and that there were less problems here than in Winnipeg and that there had been few problems over the last 20 and counting years. And in the normal course of events isn't fledging from high places the norm for Peregrine falcons and do humans really have the right to play God?

Play God?  A bit dramatic since the difference between the roof nestbox and the wall nestbox is about 20 feet.  On natural cliffs, chicks often move from one ledge to another (if available) and often more than 20 feet away from the original nest scrape.  Once they are mobile, the chicks will wander as far as their environment, their confidence and their strength will allow.  The Radisson chicks use the ledge beside the nestbox because that is what they want to do - that ledge is also about 20 feet long.  So the argument could be made that when we have put the chicks in the roof nestbox after banding we are actually just mimicking, or rather facilitating, natural chick behaviour.  I realize that it is easier to watch the birds when they are in/on the wall nestbox than when they are on the roof but when we consider what to do, it will be to decide what, if anything, might improve the chicks' chances for survival.  Just as I am sure you would rescue a chick if after fledging it landed in the middle of the road.  Neither actions are a guarantee the chick will survive its first year, but they could well improve the chick's chances.

Nice to hear about the chicks.  I guess we won't have a camera set up for Brandon.   :'(

Unfortunately, not likely this year just because it always takes a whack of scheduling to get cam stuff up and running.  But that just gives us more time to work on getting the cam back for next year.

Thanks Rose ... didn't include the Zeus year in the list simply because pairs reproduce differently and even though Zeus was much older he and Hurricane successfully produced 4 chicks.  Brooklyn and Hurricane are both young and the same age, yet their egg success isn't so good.  Having said that, since Zeus and Hurricane were only together for one year, it doesn't hurt to add them to the discussion.  :)

It was getting dark and one storm had just passed over when I went to Brandon this evening.  I was quite fortunate to see Brooklyn preparing some prey on the communications tower across from the nest box.  He took it to the nest box and Hurricane took it over to the tower across the street to prepare it some more.  She brought it back and fed their chicks.

Been a crazy morning, missed posting here after I posted on Twitter - RCF fortunately caught my miss!!  ;)

Great news - chick number 3 has hatched!  Probably yesterday, maybe even late on the 2nd since they are all about the same size/fluffiness according to the report I received.  Last egg looks to be fine.  More news when I have it - and will post here first, then twitter, so the news doesn't get waylaid!

Brandon beat Winnipeg this year.  Way to go Hurricane and Brooklyn.  :)

Sure helps speed things up when you "know" your partner.  Interestingly, Radisson, McKenzie Seeds and Logan all took the same length of time between appearance of both birds and onset of incubation = 23/24 days.  West Winnipeg took 30 days which is more what I would have expected for a new pair - Radisson and Logan were much faster than I would have expected.  Having said that, it is likely because Princess, Hurricane and Joli are experienced females despite two have new mates and knew what they wanted to do and when whereas this is Beatrix's first year nesting.

Unsettled weather for the Brandon area but it won't bother Hurricane, Brooklyn or their eggs ...

Today - Cloudy. 30 percent chance of showers late this afternoon with risk of a thunderstorm. Wind northeast 20 km/h gusting to 40. High 25. UV index 4 or moderate.  Tonight - Cloudy. 30 percent chance of showers early this evening. A few showers beginning this evening. Risk of a thunderstorm this evening and overnight. Wind northeast 20 km/h gusting to 40. Low 13.

And as of Friday, the eggs hadn't started hatching yet and no pips or the like were reported.

Hi Tracy, any word why you no longer have an internet connection?

Westman Communications has sold part of its services to another provider and one of those services was based out of the McKenzie Seeds building.  My understanding of the situation is that since the Falcon Cam only needs an internet connection for a couple of months a year, it was decided that the cost of providing that service for such a short a period of time wasn't a good value economically.  We heard about their decision late in the day Wednesday and found out the details on Thursday.  We have started to explore whether there is another provider in the area (there are a couple) who might be interested in partnering with us and with CBC but we have no idea what the future (short-term or long-term) will be for the McKenzie Seeds camera.

News about the McKenzie Seeds Cam ...

We have all the equipment and were about to head out to Brandon when we found out that we no longer have an internet connection, so we had to cancel our trip and we are looking to see what if any options we have available to us.

I don't know if we will find a solution in the next week, I don't know if we will even find a solution for this nesting season.  It may be that this year will be old school - peaking and counting the days.

We will keep working on replacing our internet connection though and keep everyone informed on how we are doing.

This is how I first remembered that Hurricane is a female.
She has hurr (her) in her name. Her = female.  ;D

Great idea, Doreen. I won't ever forget it now. :D

It must be age, but I always have trouble identifying the female & male names correctly.

It isn't you Moka, these names are easier to remember with the stories behind them ...

Brooklyn - male - there were four names chosen for the McKenzie Seeds chicks - 2 male names and 2 female names.  Unfortunately we had 3 males and 1 female.  The two female names were Brooklyn and Taylor and  the female had a band with a T in the "number" so she became Taylor and Brooklyn became Brooklyn.  Now, given that 50-70% of all peregrine chicks die in the first year, there was an better than decent chance that only one chick would survive to breed somewhere.  Now because Murphy is an unofficial staff person, it figures that Brooklyn the Boy would be the one who survived.

Hurricane - female - was a small chick and was banded as a male.  The name was one of a series of "wind" names  chosen that year, most of which fortunately could be male or female.  The other names were Taku, Chinook and Mistral - that was the year we had a whole series of tornadoes in the province - the chicks used to sit on the edge of the box and watch the storms come in from the west.  Again because Murphy works with us, Hurricane turned out to be a female so while her band is a bit confusing, her name is gender neutral.

Hopefully the stories will make it easier to keep these two straight ...

I should make myself a list and keep it beside my computer. Princess is easy, well, with her name at least.

Anyhow, I will keep looking back through the blogs to straighten myself out!

The pictures are great, RCF!

It's been raining here most of the day and to avoid getting wet Brooklyn was perched under the black/green ledge this afternoon.

Thanks for all your great photos, RCF. We were in Brandon last Sun and were fortunate enough to see somebirdie on the light on the south clock side of McKenzie building. He/she then flew to the communications tower. We were very happy to see one!   ;D

Rose and I always thought Spencer was female.   8) ;D

RCF and I always thought Spencer was a girl (same size as Kelly, maybe even bigger and fledged last) Good to know that she has shown up.

We thought "he" might be as well, but because female bands were going to be too large for his feet, we had to band and record him as a male.  It is interesting with the West Winnipeg chicks, Smiley and Joli, you really notice the size differential between them and the post-Princess chicks from the Radisson and McKenzie Seeds.  If we were to compare the Brandon chicks with Smiley, Spencer and Bogart would definitely have been sexed as male, likely Kelly would have as well so long as we didn't look at her feet.   It's interesting watching Smiley and Princess, there is a size difference but not as much as with Ivy.  And looking at Beau and Beatrix, the difference is in bulk not length - they are about the same size overall but she's bulkier, he's more gracile.

Any idea who Spencer's buddy is?

Nope, not yet, but "he" does have a black band so most probably a Manitoba male, but who exactly we don't know.  We are hoping he'll be cooperate enough for Dennis and his friends (Wowser, Mini-Wowser & Wanna-be-Wowser) to figure out who he is - or isn't.

Funny thing happened as Dennis was roaming about yesterday.  Dennis had decided to see if he could track down Spencer as he has been hanging around out east in Winnipeg.  We've never been able to locate a site the birds seemed to visit so we were interested in seeing where he was basing his operations.  Because of his transmitter, we'd been able to narrow the field a bit.  What Dennis found is that a) Spencer looks wonderful, still very brown but not really all that surprising given his age (11 months old), b) Spencer has found a nice place to hang out where there is food, c) Spencer has found a buddy to hang out with which is wonderful and d) Spencer is likely a girl.  ;D  As you might remember from last year, Spencer was the middle-sized bird, closer to Kelly in body size but closer to Bogart in foot size.  Because putting bands on that are too large is dangerous, we erred on the side of caution and band him as a male.  So now we have a male named Annie in Fargo and a female named Spencer hanging out in Winnipeg.  The birds really do like to play with our plans for them  ;)  Spencer's buddy is older looking at the plumage, and while we suspect Spencer is too young to nest successfully, we'll keep an eye on these two just in case - stranger things have happened - look at Marv and Terminator in Grand Forks, they are giving it a try despite Marv's young age ...

Thanks to Eye-Spy the cams at the Radisson are back up and operating.  Now we need to wait for the CBC upgrades to be completed and we can finish getting the Radisson equipment ready for us to go live.  When the CBC upgrades are ready we should be ready to go out to Brandon and reinstall all the cam computer gear and then we should go live shortly thereafter.  Tentative "go live" date is after the Victoria Day weekend sometime.  When I have a better estimate I will be sure to post it.

(as an FYI I posted this same information on the Radisson thread)

Interesting question. The science says copulation continues until the 3 egg is laid. For these two with four eggs in the box, incubation theoretically should have begun at egg 3 which would leave a whole less time and opportunity for "canoodling" since one or the other bird is generally on the eggs at all time.  I say generally because when the weather/temperature is nice, incubating adults have been known to get off and let the eggs bake on their own.  We'll have to wait and see how many they end up with.  Having said that, neither one of these two birds is large and at times have trouble keeping 4 chicks under them, not sure how they'll do if they have 5 - keep our fingers  crossed for good weather I guess.

And you would be right RCF - Brooklyn and Hurricane may not have been the first birds back but they are one of, if not the front-runners for nesting this year.  Which would make sense, they didn't have new partners so courting was a little less lengthy than some others.

As of this morning, there are 4 eggs in the nestbox at McKenzie Seeds.  Hatch timeline is the same as for the Radisson, end of May/beginning of June.

Thank you Tracy!  You have done such a wonderful job with the peregrines!  When the peregrines go south for the winter, do they sort of line up future mates for each other for the upcoming breeding season?  or do they just spend solitary time hunting and sleeping, etc.?   :)

You are welcome RaptorGal, my pleasure.  As for what the little demons get up to while they are away, it seems that generally the answer is no, they are very much loners for the first couple of years before finding a mate and a nestsite.  But that doesn't mean that they don't hang out with others along the way, they do, but it seems that until they actually spend a nesting season not just playing "house" with a mate, they aren't committing themselves to anyone or anyplace.  Once that happens though, they swing the other way and tend to get a wee bit obsessive about mates, nests, chicks, anything and everything.  Not that we are complaining  ;)

Got a report on last year's Brandon chicks ... Spencer and Kelly are still in Mexico but not together, one is in the east, the other in the west.  Bogart is the chick that is presumed to have died before Christmas but there has been not official confirmation so all we really know is that his transmitter stopped working and that the pattern of the last signals is similar to that when a bird has died.  Maybe we will hear more later on, maybe we'll hear something when he reappears in Brandon in 20 years ...

Just reading about this now!  Tracy, have you an update for us?  Hope all-birdies had a good flight south and will last through the winter.  But I guess, this really is just wishful thinking for somebirdies!   :)

I haven't had any updates recently but have asked one and hopefully I will hear something soon.
As for the McKenzie Seeds chick, I haven't heard if anyone managed to check out it's last reported location but I have asked specifically about him/her.

Tracy, has there been a confirmation on the McKenzie falcon/chick?  :'(

I haven't heard anything since, but I think in this case that is not good news ... the plan was to see if someone local could check out the area where the transmitter signal was last recording ... will post if I hear anything ...
