Watching the Brandon cam and the boys are sleeping in the weed patch or what's left of it. Nice and cool in the shade and quite breezy there as well.

Great photos, rcf! :D That little guy looks to be right on the "edge of fledge", if you ask me. ;)
I completely agree Kinder chick RCF seems to be getting better all the time ;D

Rose & RCF can confirm this, but Kenzie dropped down to the roof before she officially fledged off the building last year as I recall so just having the wall box doesn't mean that some/many haven't had the roof to practice flying on over the years.  The roof is large and it has been common over the years for chicks to go for the roof on their "first" flights - not really a first flight until they have left the building, but a good alternative for a chick who isn't sure if this flying thing is really what they want to be doing!

Yes, Kenzie spent about a week on the lower roof before she officially fledged to a nearby building. I also noticed from last year and the year before the chicks like to hang out on the communications tower across the street.

...This year, it's been such a treat to see the way they booted around the roof, visiting the weed patch and the lake. Doesn't matter where they are -- they're wonderful to see!  :)
Yes, I would certainly agree with that. :) Been wonderful to have a camera on them, wherever they are, even if we aren't able to locate them all of the time... Ah, there is one now, perched on a skylight, preening. 8) Don't know which one, though. :-[ Lots of "poop-art" on that skylight. Must be a favourite spot. ;)

Rosser was on the southeast pillar this morning yelling very loudly about something.  He flew off the pillar to the roof floor before I left at 6:45 am. I have pics, but that will have to wait until after 4pm.

Thanks for the info, TPC. My earlier post was just wondering, weighing the pros and cons of the different locations. I hadn't realized that the chicks had been able to be on the roof before. This year, it's been such a treat to see the way they booted around the roof, visiting the weed patch and the lake. Doesn't matter where they are -- they're wonderful to see!  :)

This is Kenzie on the perch bar from last year, she got plenty of exercise.

Can you imagine 4 of them (and there has been many years) on the roof of the nest box, on the edge and on the perch bar. What fun and most fledge successfully.

I can sure see that the nest box would be better for watchers, but do you think that the roof may have been better for the birds themselves? It seems that they're having a huge opportunity to get some great exercise, some mini flights even, with the great expanse that the roof gives them.
Short and sweet. NO.There have been no problems in all the years the nest box has been up.

So nice to see Rosser!   A roof to play on or a nest box?...........I would take the nest box cause then we can still see them(selfish) but the roof is a much better place I think.
From past experience I can tell you that the nest box gives you a better picture of the developing chicks. This is the first cam Brandon has had and before that, to see the chicks we had to go down town and use Binnos, but the chicks (2009) treated you to a great show three of them wingersizing on the nest box roof or on the perch bar and none of that nest fledged to the roof. You had no reflection from the floor, the chicks looked the right size, it was easy to see how they were developing and as long as you were willing to make the effort to go downtown you didn't have to wait for anyone to change the camera and I really can't see that being on the roof was any advantage in any way. Believe me you got lots of exercise and had lots of fun but it seems that this year has not been so interesting for me  since the chicks were banded and sometimes I don,t even watch  because it gets pretty boring watching a blank wall(I know that TPC has many calls on her time and certainly can't be at everybodies beck and call).

I totally agree Ellie!  But the roof has given them such great opportunities to grow and practice and play.

LOVE the photos RCF.  He still looks a bit mottled and has white fluff on his head.  We might have a few more days...
