Sorry SGB, didn't mean to steal your thunder, as always I didn't see your post about it, (am always a day late and a dollar short it seems, story of my life) was just trying to cheer people up a bit and give them something to look forward to.

Well that is a good thing as I have been known to get lost just standing still. I will eventually figure my way around I hope!

Good Day, All...

I read the ending to the adventure earlier this morning.  I cannot describe the sadness I was feeling.  Not sadness for the human side, but sadness for the two little chicks.  They weren't going to get the opportunity of being raised by Trey and Princess as everyone had hoped.  (Tracy et al, in particular).

I am glad that they are back safe and sound in Edmonton, and I do hope their little lives progress as best can be.

So many of you have said the things that I want to say, that I won't repeat them.  It seems we all feel very much the same about these wonderful creatures.  It does a body good, doesn't it?

Eagle63, that was very brave of you to share your thoughts with us.  It reinforces the value of the human spirit while providing encouragement that there are a lot of very wonderful and kind people in the world.  We seem to always hear about the not so wonderful ones...

The only thing left to say at this particular moment in time for me, is to thank whole-heartedly, everyone involved in this venture - be it by Tracy and her "crew", CBC, The Radisson, and all you folks on this blog.  Bravo!

I truly have enjoyed the 'roller-coaster' that we have shared.  The happy times mixed in with the sad - which is what real life is all about.  The comaraderie that has formed, is something that all of you will hopefully treasure for a long time to come...

Yeah SBG was telling me about the webcams from the land down under, certainly would be grateful for the links to that too, like I need another webcam to watch like I need another hole in my head ::)

Eagle, we still have the Radisson baby to enjoy and Australia's peregrine season is going to get started in the next few weeks...it's almost spring for them so their cycle is opposite to ours and will run until November I believe.  Break for Xmas and then Spring will come again and hopefully P&T will come back.  There is a good cam down there I can refer but will do so once the pain of this loss has eased for all.

Tracy, in recounting the battles for territory..are alot more of the young ones coming back home once they reach maturity and hence the sudden popularity of sites?  Or is that there are too few options available for them?  I agree with you, it's sad that we had 3 opportunities for breeding lost with 3 moms, even more so as one died  :(  Given we're not out of the woods yet for having a healthy population, it would have been nice to have a place to call home for all of them.  Is there anything we can do to help that situation?

I anticipate the "social zone" getting a lot of use as we keep in touch until next spring!  Maybe we could suggest some topic areas?  Like recipes, book recommendations, etc?

In closing I just want to say that although the season at the Radisson is offically closed I would venture to say I hope we here in the forum keep in touch throughout the remainder of our calendar year until next spring?

I have checked the stats and have no problem leaving the Forum open indefinitely, I'm not running out of resources and you all are having so much fun that I don't see the need for as long as you want to play here ....

Tracy you mentioned in your blog that one of the reasons for trying to introduce new chicks for P&T to foster was to reinforce their dominance of their territory.  That other non-breeding birds wouldn't be tempted to challenge for the site.  Are there specific reasons to believe that that may happen next year?  Is there something particular you have seen or noticed that may suggest that?  Or is that just supposition and a possibility based on other sites and general nature?

Just curiousity getting the better of me.

There is always a possibility of territorial disputes.  This year Ivy turned up on the Radisson territory before Trey returned and that could have turned into a battle over the territory but it didn't.  Radisson, the female in Edmonton now, is the third female vying for that territory.  Last year, the 2006 female was defeated and she remained homeless and non-breeding that year.  This year, the 2007 female return to the territory, then fought with the 2006 female and both were visibly injured and once again the 2007 female held the territory while the 2006 female once again remained homeless.  Shortly thereafter Radisson arrived and yet another fight ensued, the result of which was that now Radisson holds the territory (and has one chick), the 2007 female has died of her injuries and the 2006 female continues to be homeless and non-breeding.  Its a waste of potential - three breeding females, one dead, one territory-less and one who has produced only one chick, that will or will not survive its first year, the most dangerous year in any peregrine's life.  So yes, it is a possibility that we could have similar battles over the Radisson site.  Had Princess and Trey still had chicks, or had adopted the foster chicks, then they would still be aggressively defending the Radisson territory.  As it is, they are present but very quiet.  I haven't seen any defense of the territory, but I wouldn't expect to until next spring.  We have all the cameras in place so we will have to see what we see next year.
