I was down to Portage Avenue between 2 & 3 this afternoon. Second time today. I had legitimate business down there I swear, although I did take rather circuitous routes to accomplish the tasks (that just had to be done in two trips!)
Saw no fledgewatchers (do you guys really go??? just joking - I love reading your reports!). But I did have a great time. All four chicks at the box (3 in and 1 on the ledge). And for the first time I heard one of the whoop whooping (yak yaking?). It was quite loud over the traffic noise. In fact at first I thought it was one of the adults over head - but no, it was whichever chick was stationed on the left (when looking from the street) corner of the ledge - just a cacking away. It was thrilling! Then he /she started such vigorously flapping that I though he or she was going to take off. I couldn't decide whether this was a good or a bad thing. I would have loved to have seen a chick flight, but then I thought about the really strong winds and figured the poor thing would be swept away. I had visions of Sami racing out into traffic and realized I was the only one (that I knew of) watching and panicked about what I'd do. I saw a girl walk by with a butterfly net and almost snatched from her (it was a flimsy thing that would have been no use at all!). Thankfully birdie popped back in the box!
