I'm glad they switched the view or this hatching would be hidden by the chick pile.

JL, there were four eggs, and the last is hatching right now.  the other things you see are eggshell remnants from the first three chicks.

Is that the unhatched egg on the far end of the nestbox or is it with the cute chick pile? If so, have the parents cast it aside as non-viable?  :'(

I'm watching a live hatching right now.   :-*

Well honestly I didn't notice the 'specimen' in this case however I do recall at my site...in these early days, they generally get a small meal which is usually leftovers because they are so small and can't eat that much at this point.

Fourth egg is hatching!!!!  Right now!!!

It's a torso - head, wings and legs missing.  The hanging down bits (that look like legs) are what's left of those parts.

yes. that is wonderful, but did you get a good look at the diner.  It looked like another rodent to me.  Have to wonder what on earth is going on here.  I would think that the Missisippi would be a wonderful hunting ground for birds. ???  Love the images of the three beautifull chicks.  ;D

thanks, maggieblue - that was more of it than I had been able to see.  SOOOOOO cute when the older chick had an eggshell helmet for a moment there.   ;D
