In case some of you were disappointed the Fargo cam went off way too soon, it has been up again the last couple days, and all 3 of the remaining chicks have been there quite often. Now, they say cam will be up till August 9, so hopefully they continue to visit. Just watched a beautiful view of a chick, and parent came by to have some leftovers.

Poor little Discovery died during the time the cam was down. If interested in reading more comments about her rescue look further below the “fledge week” posting and click on “view more posts” - 117 was the last count.

Fledge Week!

We feel as though it is now safe to say that all chicks have fledged (taken flight from the nestbox area) except for Discovery. We have positive identification that Boston ended up on the window sill of a nearby building today. Apparently she rested for a short time and then took off again. We will likely have reports like these over the next week or so. We will do our best to try and locate the fledglings in the area using the nest camera as we are able. If you are in the Fargo/Moorhead area and have positive sightings of the fledglings, we'd all like to hear about it on the Audubon Dakota Facebook page

The dark hood I suspect is Beau's genes rising to the fore ...but it will depend on what s/he looks like in his/her adult plumage to say for real ... in the meantime that chick will be easy to spot after fledging ....

These four are almost ready to fledge. I noticed there is one that has quite different head markings than the other three.  One of them has a very full dark hood.

It's absolutely wonderful to see 4 healthy chicks from our WW falcon male "Annie", perhaps to be re-named as "Arnie"?
This is so cool!  I like to call it, "spreading their wings"!

From the cam page

Banding a Success!

Just to let all our viewers know, the banding was a success. We have 3 females and 1 male. The names are as follows: Females - Aurora, Discovery and Boston. Male - Marv.  A special thanks to Tim Driscoll, master bander from Grand Forks, ND for making the trip down to perform the banding and blood draws.

From the Bank of the West folks ...

FARGO, ND – June 19, 2013 – Fargo’s peregrine falcons are nesting again atop the Bank of the West building downtown.  This year Miracle and her new mate are raising four youngsters, which are now a month old.  On Friday, June 21, the eyeasses (falcon chicks) will be banded in the sixth floor conference room of the Bank of the West building, 520 Main Ave., Fargo. Midwest Peregrine Society, Audubon Dakota and Bank of the West will host the annual banding, which starts at 10:00 a.m. It is open to the public and members of the media by RSVP no later than June 20th.

Peregrine falcons are the world’s fastest animal, capable of dive speeds greater than 220 mph. They have seen a steady recovery since being listed as an endangered species nearly three decades ago.

“The bank has watched our peregrine falcons raise 32 youngsters since their first nest here in 2001,” said Scott Green, branch area manager at Bank of the West. “This year we have a full nest, which has surprised and delighted everyone at the bank as well as the falcon-watchers.  Being able to give Miracle and her brood a home makes us proud, but more than that, being part of a species’ recovery is a unique honor.”

Thousands of followers have been watching the eyeasses grow via a new pan-tilt-zoom webcam provided by Bank of the West, Red River Commodities, AM Vets Post 7 and members of the Fargo Falcon Project Fund.   Viewers can watch the falcons from the tower-top camera here:  https://new.livestream.com/AudubonDakota/events/2079350?cat=event&query=audu

The new FalconCam is helping the project team better study the birds’ mating and parental behavior with 360-degree views, clarity up to a mile away, plus audio, all new features at this site. The FalconCam has received thousands of hits from viewers in all 50 states and over a dozen countries.

“The real story of Peregrine Falcon recovery success is one of partnerships and communities,” said Marshall Johnson, Executive Director for Audubon Dakota. “Communities like Fargo have rallied around this project and that has been the true game changer for raptor recovery. In short, collaboration between farmers, conservationists, communities and policy-makers have brought iconic species like the Bald Eagle and Peregrine Falcon back from the brink of North American extinction”

On Friday, certified bander Tim Driscoll will band the four young peregrine falcons with federal United States Fish & Wildlife Service identification bands. Additionally, blood samples will be taken to monitor the genetics and possible contaminants in the birds.  This event is open to the public and the media by RSVP.  For more information about Fargo’s Peregrine Falcons, go to:  http://dk.audubon.org/fargo-peregrine-falcon-projectfalconcam.

Yup, when I got the notification of Annie in Fargo in March/April from the Fargo folks they wanted to double check the band info because he had no silver band.  Doesn't happen with our birds much, but apparently the folks in the Midwest see it more - but heck they have 10x, 100x the birds we have!  :D  The bands attach differently - the coloured band attaches with rivets, the silver aluminum one folds over.

I found a couple of meanings for the name Ani, one is "Powerful and Complete" and also one meaning "Beautiful".  I guess it doesn't really matter as long as this pair have healthy chicks.  :)

The cam is finally LIVE now!!  ;D   We will be able to watch Miracle and Annie or maybe call him Andie?  :-\   They have four eggs now too!!

He was named for our 30th Annie-versary, so I hope they keep his name (which is the protocol).  Shortening his name to Anni might make it a little less obviously a female name but the story is good - he was too large for male bands so he was sexed as a female at banding.  John Wayne's name was Marion Robert Morrison and his image didn't suffer much.

Thanks, TPC, that was an interesting catch up of the events back in July 2010.

Following that was an interesting comment by allikat:

Wow, what a report!  Well, a big thanks is in order to BccS, Eye-spy and Gail for their quick thinking on Saturday morning!  Still can't believe that a female fledged first!  Today sounded much more intense!  Again, thank you to who was present to help out our falcons! I write it again, still am very surprised that the females went first, but things happen for a reason.  Great job everyone and another big thanks goes out to the  "Fledge Watcher" !  As TPC wrote, a good night's sleep is in order and well deserved!  So there we are.  That first fedgling was not a female, after all!

I believe Annie is the chick we rescued when she tried fledging the first time way back in July 2010.  First time I saw a Peregrine up close.  It was so exciting.  That was a great year for the WW birds.  Good nesting site and lots of action.

Moonstar is correct - it was Annie.  For those of you who would like to catch up - Annie's Rescue

Heard from Fargo,

Annie's mate is the resident female since 2008, Miracle.  They know they have two eggs already, third one probably and think incubation has just started or is about to start.  Productivity in Fargo has been low over the last few years, so it will be interesting to see what some new genetics add to the mix.

Webcam will (hopefully) go online shortly - they will send out an announcement.  I'm on their mailing list as I'm sure others are so we will get the news as soon as it is available.

Is this the first time you have had news of Annie, TPC? :-\

It is.  And that is not surprising, we generally don't hear about our birds unless they are nesting.  Occasionally we hear about a sighting outside of the breeding season.

Neat-o! It is wonderful to hear about the kids. Wish more of them would write home.  :)

Well now is the time when we hear from other projects - birds are showing some leg and cameras are going live and band numbers are being read, so who knows, we may yet have news about more kids and grand-kids.

Fargo - 2013 / Annie & Miracle

A funny thing happened on the way to Fargo ...

Annie, a female chick of Beau and Jules from their successful nest on the B&B in 2010 has turned up in Fargo and is apparently the new resident MALE there.  Go figure!!  Princess' and Ivy's girls are so small they are banded as males, while Beau's and Jules' boys are so large they are banded as females!   ::)   And just so we are clear on things, we measure their legs to be sure we are banding them correctly ...

Anyways, Annie is in Fargo ... more news as I have it!
