RCF, that is what I think too.  Sometimes there is one that is quite content just to be the observer but still wants to be included in the snack time huddle!!  Did you notice that Princess did go over to him and see if he was ok?  What a mama, checking out her chicks!! :D

He couldn't have been too hungry by the size of his crop from the 6:30 feed.  ;D

:)  Well we have our after supper snack right now.  Three of us want it and the other is just observing for the moment.  Guess he is not too hungry.  They sure do eat!!  Noisy too!!  haha, all must be healthy.  I notice some feather changes going on.  Soon they are going to look like the chick-zillas!

1850h
Chicks are in the sun by themselves and I have no idea where Princess and Ivy are ... checked the Rogers and Hydro signs as well as the Radisson sign down below.  Could be sitting somewhere preening, perhaps up on the communications towers as it doesn't look as though there is much or any wind.

Oops, spoke too soon, looks like Princess back on the front edge of the box ... just looking around and looking in and now up overhead ... doing a little preening of her breast feathers now hopping back in and shuffling her feet under the chicks with her back to the sun.  She's not tucking down on them rather she's just stanidng over them right now and the kids don't seem to be wriggling any, so still sated from dinner a half hour ago ...

1830 and its mealtime again and the sun is out in the western part of Winnipeg and starting shine in the nestbox.  Kids are all fed and comatose, Princess was having a nosh and is now off to dispose of the remains.  Chickpile is just a white fuzzy ball in the sun - little re-arranging and wing streches and now a bit of jockeying for the covetted "middle-of-the-pile" position.  Because the box faces west, if the clouds clear out the chicks will get to have a bit of a bake in the sun before it goes down in an hour and a bit.

Switched the cam view so folks can see exactly how much cover Princess has decided she wants.  The angle is not straight down but rather a bit on an angle so she is actually a little more undercover than shows here.  At the moment it is dripping but there is not rain in the puddle on the ledge beside the box (I can see it on the ledge-cam)

Wen't back through the video since the most recent meal didn't really show the chicks well - anywho, went back to the 0600+ feeding this morning and counted all four heads before they piled in on one another awaiting Princess' return.  So, so far, looks like no one came out worse for wear in yesterday's rain...
Whew! So glad to hear that, TPC. :-* When I checked on the chicks early this morning at one of the feedings, I could only count 3 chicks. I guess the 4th one was stuck in the middle of the chickpile somewhere and I just couldn't see it.

Luckily she's got great instincts.

Ivy is so much smaller that the chicks would not be as well protected.

I imagine that is true for most pairs.

For those of you from away, here's the Environment Canada forecast for the long weekend ...
  • Today - Periods of rain. Amount 10 to 20 mm. Wind northwest 20 km/h. High 13 / Tonight - Clearing this evening. Wind northwest 20 km/h becoming light early this evening. Low plus 5.
  • Sunday - A mix of sun and cloud with 30 percent chance of showers in the morning and early in the afternoon. Otherwise sunny. Wind becoming northwest 20 km/h in the morning. High 18.
  • Monday - Sunny. Low 6. High 20.

Looks like Princess left and Ivy came in to cuddle the kids. :)

Who was it who came up with the phrase "huddle-cuddle" a couple of years ago?  Not sure if it has made it into the Phanatic's Dictionary yet but will check.  In any case, with the cooler temps this morning (its been so warm since they hatched I'm sure it was a shock), this morning's chickpiles have definitely been "huddle-cuddles"!
