How could you tell that they knew something was wrong?

Usually they tuck everyone underneath, particularly the new ones and they tend to over do it right at the start.  She wasn't.  Chick hatched at night and was under her through the night but by the next morning, she had her/him out where she could watch him/her (daytime temps were warm so no real worries there).  The other chick was under and out-of-sight, the sick chick was where she could watch it.

Does that help?

Lone chick here is looking good, had 4 small meals today.
The dead chick Jules removed this morning but she knew s/he was in trouble right from the start.

Sad news for Beau & Jules but thankfully they have a second baby that appears to be thriving.  :)

Thx for your thoughts, susha.   :-*

Thanks for letting us know, TPC.  It is very sad, but it is Nature.  It's how it is - we're just fortunate to have an insider's view of these Peregrine families and along with the great pleasure we feel at watching these creatures grow and thrive, we also must experience the sadness that comes when some don't make it. :'(

Hurray for Jules and Beau's one and only!   :-*
:'(  Your words have so much meaning and on behalf of myself and I hope, the forum, thank you. :-* gcg

Chick one is fine, chick two appears to have passed away at this point.

And no, it wasn't a question of weather, the box is high and dry, so no need to worry about the surviving chick, s/he looks great, active and strong and getting fed well.

As for the chick that died, that it survived to hatch at all was a long shot, but Nature doesn't play the odds.  Usually those kind of small miracles are a great thing.  Not in this case I'm afraid.  And no, there was nothing that could be done.
