I am not the expert on this, but as TCP has pointed out the males are smaller than the females. Don't worry about the ledge, as TCP has said in earlier posts they have a sense about this.

Love the close up view.
I get so nervous with them so close to the edge.  I am afraid one will decide to jump up on the edge.
One of these two seems much bigger than the other one.  Is the bigger one the female, or is it still too early to go by size to figure out which is male/female?

the toe nail painting would have been cool

band number or tail painting - they get blood all over their toes, so would be too hard to see  ;)

Actually we were trying to thing of ways to make it easier for a volunteer fledge watch - but painting their tails (which are showing) means waiting for the paint to dry so that the feather doesn't stick together which would prompt more preening and then the paint is all gone.  Also thought of putting colour on their aluminium band but again, don't want them eating it.  If they were in the nestbox, I would probably have taken the time to paint their tails but on the ledge, just a bit too much time/too fiddley, so we will just have to find other ways to identify the chicks .

If we're having this much trouble distinguishing between Trey and Princess, we'll never be able to tell the chicks apart. Maybe Tracy should have daubed each of their heads with a different colour yesterday while she was there!

Wouldn't help you in 3 weeks as all that fluff will be gone ...  :D

For those of you who were wondering where "Mom" & "Dad" went durung the banding yesterday ---- they did a lot of flying around the legislative building & landing on the "Golden Boy" ---- they have a lot of faith in Tracy (as we all do)

Dennis tracked both adults during the banding and they were never more than a building away during the banding.  Before and after however, I'm not surprised the were over at the Leg, its a great hunting location - always has been.  Is particularly good for hunting teal - blue-winged and green-winged - as smaller ducks, Princess certainly can carry them, and depending on the size, so can trey.  They also have been hunting up alot of shorebirds - you can see the long legs as they bring them in for the chicks ...

Some serious post-snack wing exercising going on there!

Did anyone else see that last feeding? Looked like one chick took off with the snack, sorta kinda tasted it, and decided it wasn't worth the effort of figuring out how to eat it.
