Hey TPC, you can add me to the fledge watch anytime next Sunday. I'm watching my own baby girl fledge to the middle east for a month on Saturday, may not be able to see through the tears that day.

1445 hrs (local) - everyone is napping - one boy in north corner, brother & sister tucked up against the front wall just south of the point ...

I think full-on fledgwatch begins Saturday morning but am still keeping an eye on the little darlings now as you just never know.  At the moment, even though they are flapping, they don't quite seem ready to go yet ...

Early morning is probably the most important time as most our birds (as I recall) like to go earlier rather than later ... during the day there are bodies downtown and watching the webcam so we may be able to have lighter coverage then ... after work is probably the second most important time slot as folks just aren't watching ...

Okay....so when is the official fledge watch?  Does it start this weekend?
My question too, allikat. And do you need people on the ground near the Radisson from dawn till dusk, TPC? ??? bccs can do the "dawn" watch, right, bccs?! ;)

Sis is with the adult in the south corner, one of the boys is chowing down ...

Oops, adult getting swarmed by his kids ... one of the boys is taking a page out of his sisters playbook and is in the south corner ...

I think it's got to do with her size.   ;D ;D  Miss Piglet is huge compare to her brothers.  No wonder Trey steers away from her.   ;D  She's running all over the place with the prey in her mouth followed by her hungry brothers.  I think she's finally sharing a bit since they won't leave her in peace to eat it all, oink, oink.    ;)

A parent brought food and the female snagged onto it and won't let the boys get a bite.  She is one greedy female!

Fledgling generally refers to birds that have just taken their first flights - usually in use for about the first month or until migration.  Juvenile is used a bit more flexibly - can refer to fledglings and can be used on after-hatch-year birds if they still have a juvenile appearance and aren't nesting/on territory.  Basically it means a pre-breeding age bird.

there are probably official definitions, but this is how I have found them to most often used ...

Don't really know if this is the right place to post this, but here goes anyway. Another question for TPC, or anyone else who knows... What is the difference between a "fledgling" and a "juvenile", or "juvie", as I've read that they're called? And at what point in their lives are they actually called adults and are able to mate and reproduce? ???
