Very interesting! :) Are you able to watch the eggs being laid on your spy-cam, TPC? :-\

The peregrines know all.  I can't tell you if they know how many eggs they are are going to lay, but they do know when to start incubating so all the kids hatch within about 24-48 hours which means they all develop, male and female, at a similar rate.

Wish we had that ability.  We either can watch all the eggs being laid via webcam or we check 4-5 days after the first egg and we usually have all the eggs laid by that point.  We know approximately what the interval is between eggs so we can calculate the lay date of the penultimate egg and then we can calculate approximate hatch date range.

Incubation won't begin until the penultimate egg (second last egg) is laid, so it usually takes about 3-4 days after the first egg is laid until hard incubation begins, then we have approximately 28-33 days until the eggs hatch.
Thank you for explaining what "hard incubation" means on another Board, TPC... I just assumed that incubation began immediately after the first egg was laid. ::) But how does one know when the second last egg has been laid? Even if you were to check the nestbox regularly, would you know if it were the second last egg? Would you just be guessing, according to how many eggs a peregrine has typically laid in previous years? Does the peregrine laying the eggs know this, instinctually? ???

Ok, I'm curious, Tracy - were you there around 11 or so this morning?  Both parents seemed somewhat agitated, flying around and around and finally sitting on the tower - reminded me of of banding times!

Yup, that was us.  They were giving Dennis the evil eye from the tower while I was checking the box and the egg.  And yes, Dennis had his camera with him, so hopefully we have a photo of two of the pair of them on the tower ...

What a gorgeous egg!  Especially in such a secure setting.  I loved watching the family last year but am looking forward to a different viewpoint (it was amazing in 2007).  I wonder how long it will look so tidy :)

*yippee skippee*

Wow, TPC, talk about a woman of few words! I had to read three posts before it struck me that we had an EGG! Your «yippee skippee» did the trick.

Thank you so much for the photo. At this point, we are all agog and waiting to see the count of the clutch.

HAPPY DANCE  ;D NEST ON THE WEST  ;D ;D BABIES TO WATCH OVER  ;D ;D ;D

Our resident male is Ivy, a 2005 wild-hatch from the Radisson Hotel.
