Ha, I know the answer to that, yup, you're right Deb. Didn't see it live, but have seen that thing used before.

Sexing by foot size (and we have a measurement guide) is standard
Is that done with the little tool with varying sizes that we could see Dr. Bob using yesterday?

Wow! Those tail feathers are amazing! That must be one of the "girls", up close to the camera. I think I see a RED ankle bracelet! 8)

Good luck, bc bird, I just finished watching all three! What a great experience! You and your banding team do a bang up job, TPC!

Super thank you for the videos!

Banding videos are up on our video gallery - www.youtube.com/theperegrinechick - its in three parts because of the YouTube's maximum length.

Video part 1 won't play for me after 3:52, and I don't see Part 2 and 3 available??

Not sure why you should have a problem after 3:52, its playing fine on 4 computers right now ... I have put the banding in its own playlist on the right - click on the box on the right and it should open up the playlist and you should see the three parts ... "beginning", "middle", "end" ... try replaying the video from the playlist list and see if that makes a difference ...

Chick pile up near the webcam lens right now. :D I guess they're trying to keep out of the rain. :)

pretty, fluffy, breathing chick pile, if I was a chick, I know I'd want to be in the middle of that... ;D

Great videos! Thanks everyone! Couldn't watch yesterday so really enjoyed the play-by-plays and pictures yesterday too. Glad the little ones (not so little when you see them in TPCs hands) are doing so well and they certainly looked vocal.
TPC don't I remember you saying last year that sexing the chicks isn't an exact science?

Sexing by foot size (and we have a measurement guide) is standard and in all the years I've been involved (that's 20 years for those who are counting), the last nest in the nestbox was the only one where birds weren't the gender they measured as ... having said that, given that Taku was half the size of her male-sized female siblings, I'm not sure we should consider that crop of chicks standard in any way shape or form!!  ;)

Stopped raining again and one ( Ivy) I think is back on the dot of the letter I.  We do not need any more rain for goodness sake. Enough for the rest of the summer.

Will you be able to report more about the experience?
1. Are you actually open to the roof/sky when you are doing this? Seems unlikely with with Princess about.
2. Do you wait until the parents are out of site before grabbing the chicks.  Seems an obvious choice, but what if they move in as you are doing this - shades of helicopters or fighter planes honing in on you within seconds.  Scary results all round.
3. What happens as you put them in the buckets? Panic, resignation, combinations?
4. How do you decide which to grab first? Closest? Calmest? Largest?
5. You make it look so easy.  ( Im sure that can't be so.)
6. Is it a problem putting them back in the nestbox? Sounds like the parents weren't there.
Have they ever been?  I guess it might be like last year when you were all out in the open.
7.  Any comments about the process?

I know many of us keep suggesting you do a book.   A children's one, perhaps??

I really hope you will.

Sorry if there are too many questions.
