...no just a hobby. I call it a passion,my wife calls it an obsession,but loves the photos that are displayed in the back room. She does sometimes look at me strange when I tell her on a Sat or Sun morning...I'm meeting Tracy on the roof...lol

So the last thing I seen when I left here on Saturday was an eagle flying over me, and the first thing when I get home late yesterday when I turned on my puter was your great pics of the eagles. Great fun.. Amazing pictures too. :D

We have geese, lots and lots of ducks, the loons, blue heron, osprey, eagle, hawk, owls, ruffled grouse(partridge), flying squirrels,lol and oh we have pilated woodpeckers too but you don't see them everyday, just a few times a year. I have seen wild turkeys,(fairly rare) vultures(rare), peacocks yes peacocks (that have excaped from somewheres and are wild) For four-legged friends we have plenty of white-tailed deer,moose, coyotes, bobcats, linyx, black bear, weasels, beaver and ground hogs, porcupines, raccoons, squirrels and bunny rabbits. More rare to see is an eastern cougar or a mink or fisher. 8) Several unconfirmed sightings of the elusive black cougar.

The lens is just over 12in. long...and heavy. Not something you want to carey around your neck all day.

Post by: photosbydennis on January 09, 2009, 22:29: I would love to say that a Peregrine was found in Winnipeg at this time of year...sorry,after a few days of stopping by and checking on the reported location in this "cool weather" no luck. So...I to will have to wait for their return.
Even in this -40c stuff with the wind chill, the clicker finger has not been idol.

Some photos of another -40c encounter with a Snowy Owl are in the process of being loaded to this gallery. More will be added in the next couple day's...make sure to check back.
What seemed like a very long week of working evenings...I'm now ready for a "SUNNY" week-end. My wife's job jar has been taken care of...kinda !
Hope to search for more NHO's and Great Grays this week-end...Snowy Owls are now old news and will use as a back-up.

Fingers crossed they nest in the boxes this year. Those boxes look very deluxe. Was the picture of TPC braving the cold winds on the roof taken at the West Winnipeg location? I see trees in the background. I live in West Winnipeg and have been keeping an eye out for peregrines for the last two years without any success. I know that you can't reveal the location but I am hoping that I might have a lucky sighting this year. ;D

I also live in West Winnipeg MaggieBlue and I have been trying to catch a glimpse of the West End pair also without success! Here hoping that we see them this year!
I did however luck out seeing Princess and Trey passing through downtown and visiting family in Norwood Flats. Last year was a great one for me..we saw Princess not 20 feet above our heads trying to catch her next meal. Saw her fly up on the tall mature tress and listened to all the other birds around who were not pleased by her presence. She flew up high to catch the wind so she could keep a watchful eye from above. It was awesome!!!

Some boards have the new topic option, others don't. The Peregrine Room board does at the moment, so you could try there, Sami. TPC always sorts things out anyway.

Post by: photosbydennis on April 25, 2009, 06:36: Welcome to all the New Folks that are now on the form. As we now get ready for a Great Peregrine Season...here's hoping that we have "Three" nesting Peregrine sites this year in Manitoba...time will tell.
In the mean time, if interest prompts you I have a gallery of Nesting Great Horned Owls, with "Three" owlets in the first nest.
A second location has also been confirmed...this nest is some what out of the way and may be difficult to get to as often as I would like.

We were stopped at a red light at St. Mary's when we spotted it. I can't tell you what species it was, but I think it was somekind of large hawk. By any chance have you photographed any hawks in that area? Beautiful flyer!

They usually soar high up with the wind and head south with it....Aparently, a few people I know have seen some by the University of Manitoba as well.

Trey has a most white bib...where as Princess has black specks near the bottom of hers. As well if the bands are visible...Trey has black & silver...Princess has black & green.

OK so I thought this was a seriously cool idea and I made it my wallpaper but it is such a startling picture that it gave me a little jump everytime I turned on the screen so I changed it to one of the puppy at 6 weeks old - awwwwwwww!

At first I wished he had been at my house to capture the various "bird" moments I've experienced (like the time I was lucky enough to see the wood duck chicks jump from the box - we've had the box up for years but I've seen this event only once. Or the time a huge pileated woodpecker visited our trees for a few hours). How I'd love to have photos of those moments. But then I realized I do have those moments in my head. Far better that we get to see his moments!

Post by: The Peregrine Chick on May 13, 2010, 13:38: They haved decided to nest on the B&B in the older of the two nestboxes in their territory. And when I say older, I mean that this building has had a box of one type or another on it for most of the last 20 years. A couple of years ago, the newest incarnation of the box was installed when it became apparent that we had a pair - at the time Ivy and Lucy - using the West Winnipeg site. We thought that the new box and new design might appeal to them more than the older design. Ivy and Jules visited it last year but opted not to nest there. This year, Beau took a shine to the location pretty early in their relationship and despite Jules' repeated requests for last year's site.

As for the street address, we are keeping that confidential again this year. If we can get them to nest successfully here perhaps in the future we can "spill the beans" but for the moment, we are giving them their space in the hopes that it will increase their odds for success.

'Fraid I'm going to have to cop to this one, most the time the paper wants a story, the weather isn't good for the birds (or they are the nest ledge) so I steer them to Dennis photo gallery or send them photos myself. And I admit, love being able to get his photos in the paper!

Saw a bald eagle, a red tailed hawk, a ferruginous hawk, a great horned owl and a lanner falcon. Was well worth the trip to the Zoo! Thanks for recommending it, Dennis. :-*

She told me that someone was going to come out and check out the birds. A few days ago, she told me they had received a nice letter from Tracy which told them that the bird nesting there was a Kestral.

Yesterday, I forwarded the link of the 2 Kestral photos to my coworker. She sent the links to her husband and he showed the guys there. They were all very impressed with the pictures, and excited that they recognized the location of shots. ;D

If you want to pay by cheque, there is now an email order form on the webpage - you fill out the form, Dennis will email your invoice and you mail in your cheque. Simple.

Deadline for orders is Friday, November 23rd in order for the calendars to be printed and delivered in time for Christmas gift-giving.

While out owling I came across Dr. Jim Duncan from Manitoba Conservation and his wife Patsy who band Hawk Owls and Great Grays here in Manitoba.
This was now the 2nd. chance to see them in action. The first time being in 2009 and now again in 2013 http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/owl_banding_2013
This gallery is under construction and will be completed in the next couple day...so check back again.
It's a delight to watch them at work...giving me to opportunity to view and photograph these Winter Owls up-close and personal.
Their banding and research track owls from year to year and gives them an idea as to their movement and numbers.
The series of photos includes their capture, banding, documentation of weight,age and sex of each owl captured.
This years eruption of Great Grays in Manitoba has kept them busy.

Lady Gray'l died a few years ago, but her work continues.

Just to recap on the winter/spring owls.
Snowies again this year had been harder to find and when found they seemed to be very spooky...hard to say why this was ?
Great Gray Owls on the other hand a different story...turned out to be the second year in a row for lot's of activity.
This years owl hotspot was a mere 1hr. drive from home North of the city...as to last years, 2-3 hr. trips.
The biggest challenge was the snow and staying warm in the -40c temps we had.
The latest find of a Great Horned Owl nest site has brought better conditions and just in time before the owlets fledged.
