Ohio / Cleveland - Terminal Tower - 2015 / Boomer & Newton
« Reply #169 on: September 16, 2015, 10:24 »
Well that sucks, they had already had a bad year ...

This from May of this year ...

It is with sadness that we acknowledge the loss of Newton and Boomer’s lone eyas of 2015. The specifics are still somewhat unclear, however as one can tell from the Falconcam, Newton and Boomer have ceased any parenting behavior, including incubation, at the nest site. At this point the 4 remaining eggs have long ceased to be viable.

Read more here - http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/news.php?item.176.3

May was not a good month this year at lots of nestsites in Canada and the US.

it is with heavy heart that I relay the news of Boomers passing. some of us watched Boomer from the egg stage . He had a special place for me and for many others. He was offspring of Scout and Orville.

From C&C's FB page:

Body of the Terminal Tower's Boomer Found: RIP to Boomer, a handsome, steady, and reliable mate and a part of the TT's magnificent peregrine legacy! As we all suspected when a new male appeared at the TT nest tray in place of Boomer this summer, Boomer met his demise. We can only speculate that he was likely killed in a territory battle, possibly having battled the current resident tiercel at the site, Stacker, who has paired with Newton since June. Laurie Graber from DOW informed us that Boomer's body was found on the Rockefeller Building, which is a few blocks to the northwest of the Terminal Tower. Boomer is deserving of a much more complete tribute, but for now we'll post this pic of Boomer when he was resting comfortably at the tray with one eye shut and one of his molted primaries propped up beside him...

It looks like two chicks hatched out of the four eggs at this site.  The first on April 21st and the second sometime before April 24th.
They are growing in leaps and bounds :D

2012 NESTING SEASON

4 eggs laid at this nestsite, with a successful hatch last week. However, some sad news about the 1st egg. :'(

Info from the website...

SW and Boomer welcomed their first chick of the 2012 season this morning, Thursday, April 19, 2012.

This joyous news is tempered with sadness however. The first egg to pip ran into difficulty hatching. Instead of scoring the inside of the blunt end of the eggshell, it excavated along the flank of the egg. All of its work could not force open a avenue for its escape and after struggling for two days, it has apparently died, stuck to the membrane within its shell.

It was banding day for the 3 chicks today. A report from the BCAW site:

Posted by bobbytimewarp who attended the banding,

"An event downtown caused DOW and others to run a bit late..
the wire to the drawbridge is no longer there, so they got the chicks out with it down..
actually, i thought SW was a bit more relaxed with the drawbridge down..
boomer brought food into the nest and SW was about to feed when they opened the windows.. they didn't want a feeding to occur..
bands are black over red..
2 females, 1 male..
76/D is female "Soarer"
75/D is female "Sabby"
32/B is the male "Spark"
females were named by Deb Mathies' kids and Mike and Christa's John named Spark..."

No nothing yet KC but no news could be good news - I truly hope so!  Perhaps birds, like humans, suffer from some memory loss after a head injury.  I hope he's flying free and is happy  :-*

Given that its the middle of the winter even in Ohio, chances are he sees no biological need to rush back to the Tower.  He's off hunting and doing things the peregrines do in the off-season.  Also, it is just as likely he has been back to check out the nestsite but its not like spring when they want to put their toes all over what is there.  He flies past, maybe sees SW and Boomer in his travels, but he hormonal urges haven't kicked in yet, so he's letting it slide - smart if he plans to be the resident male on the territory - don't waste effort, or at least not until you need to.

Just my opinion of course  ;)

Hmmm... I wonder where Ranger could have gone?  :-\ I felt certain he would turn up at the Terminal Tower soon after  he was released.

I wonder if his head injury really did affect his memory and he will just find a new home or maybe he came, he saw and decided not to bother.  I do hope he's okay though. Sometimes they do well in rehab but not so much back in the wild.

Rangers' release is taking place this morning at 11 am EST and they're releasing him 30 miles from the site.

You can watch the refresh cams on the home page.  Doubtful we'll see him at the nest box unless Boomer is not around and he zips in un noticed but you never know.

When Milton was released last year, he sped right home and Jack was at our site so he was able to go right to the nest ledge and hang out for awhile.

Apparently the release site is 30 miles from Cleveland, so won't take him long to get back to the Terminal Tower site. Will be checking in Sunday to see if he does turn up at the site and if there is a fight between him and Boomer.

Checked in to see if any news on Ranger and saw this posting:

As reported by Chad & Chris today at CMNH. This is such happy news for me.
"Ranger is doing great! He has been successful catching live prey that is released into the cage. Laura hasn't been able to open up the connecting cage for him yet to give him more "flight space" because she has a full house with other raptor patients. But things are still looking good for him to be released, most likely at the end of winter or into the early spring. We plan to make it back there soon and if it works out we'll try to post a pic or two of him with our next update."

Latest update from the CMNH website:
Went out to see how Ranger was doing again this past week and he has made some vast improvements! He was in a bigger cage and we watched him fly to different perches with no noticeable difficulty landing or with his balance. He was again very tuned into movement and a few times he flew from the ground straight up to the perches.

We wanted to see how he would do with a full bird (as he wasn't holding and tearing it before and Laura had to cut it into pieces to feed him), so Laura gave him two small birds. We watched him grasp and pluck both birds, tearing and eating them.

We asked Laura to let us know when she puts him into a bigger flight cage so that we could observe him again, and she decided that we could do it then. So, we got Ranger (he was quite fiesty) and when we put him on the ground in his new cage he flew immediately to the furthest and highest perch in the cage. This cage also has a camera in it, so Laura will be able to observe him and show Dr. Riggs his behavior.

We were all very encouraged, and if he keeps improving a future release is possible. As he shows continued improvement, this cage can also be expanded by opening it up to another connecting cage in the back forming an "L" so he would be able to bank and turn and fly a little further.

We will continue to post updates as we know more. Go Ranger-- we're all rooting for ya!

Visited the BCAW site and apparently SW is visited regularly by a new male who has been identified as:
He is BOOMER!! C/66 2008 Columbus!!
Will post more info when known or if anyone else knows, please post.

Boomer has quite the lineage, apart from being the son of Scout and Orville, he's descended from quite a few famous falcons including Mercury, Snowball, Bandit, Rosevelt and Buckeye (all names we are familiar with through Alisons great stories and updates)!  It's quite fascinating..almost feel sorry for the little guy as he as he has so much to live up to now!

Juanita has put up a great chart of his geneology here and if you go back through the thread you can see when he was first spotted here and some photos of him and SW in the nest box bowing to each other!

A few updates from the Terminal Tower site:

June 24th, 2010:
"It was brought to our attention that some people are a bit frustrated by the lack of information about the TT nest and fledglings. With all of the care and concern that everyone has for this nest, it's understandable, but please try to understand that there isn't much news to report. We don't want to speak for Scott (and of course, he has more pressing issues on his mind with his mom), but when we filled in for him in the past we realized that it is very difficult to keep up with post-fledge activity at the TT. Some nest sites lend themselves to observing after the juvies fledge, as the young stay closer to the nest site and low enough to view and ID. At the TT, the juvies can be on the tops of the highest buildings and a block or two away within the week of fledging. So, going downtown to try to observe them can be quite difficult. As we mentioned when we last posted, even when we did see SW and the juvies they were very high up (to the point that you wouldn't have been able to pick them out as peregrines without binoculars, and you'd never be able to ID them up there, even with a spotting scope). As for Ranger, we have been in contact with Laura Jordan of the Medina Raptor Center almost daily, but we have nothing to report beyond Harvey's updates. Unfortunately, it's a waiting game now to see if his condition can improve and they will be reassessing him in 1-2 weeks. Hope this helps somewhat, but sometimes it seems that "no news is good news" at this stage."

June 27th, 2010:
Arrow Recued fom TT Rooftop
On Thursday, June 24th, I received a call from the Tower City management office reporting a falcon down and in distress on the 16th floor of the Terminal Tower complex. Jim Maier of Tower City met my daughter and me and took us to an office with an window opening on the roof. An immature female Peregrine was lying in a corner of the roof deck. I went out on the roof and grabbed her. She struggled but had difficulty standing. It was Arrow, 58/H. She was not emaciated and had good meat on her chest. She was breathing hard and seemed to have blood around the opening to her trachea. Her tongue was discolored indicating she might be dehydrated. We took her back to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, administered fluids and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent and set her up in a small cage. We made arrangements to have her taken to Laura Jordan of the Medina Raptor Center the following morning. I received a message from Laura late Friday afternoon and she reported that Dr. Riggs could not find any broken bones, injury or indication of disease. Laura was going to set Arrow up in a flight cage and give her the weekend to gain strength, rehydrate and get her wits about her. Our hope is that she will be releasable sometime this week. I will update on Monday as we learn more.

Ranger's condition remains the same.

June 28th, 2010:
Arrow's Passing
Laura Jordan of the Medina Raptor Center reported that Arrow was found dead in her enclosure Sunday morning. Clearly her internal injuries were more severe than the vet had thought on Friday. In talking with Laura she said it was clear that Arrow had suffered head trauma and though feisty and defensive when being handled, on her own she struggled to stand and was clearly in significant trouble. Dr. Riggs thought that she probably had a slow arterial bleed in her cranium that ultimately took her life.

Chris and Chad Saladin reported the following on Sunday
"On the more positive side, out of pure luck we managed to see some peregrine action on Saturday evening as we swung through the TT on our way home from the Tower East site. One juvie was calling as he/she was flying high up by the Courthouse building, and then swung around to the other side where another juvie joined him/her in flight, and then both darted toward the back of the TT. As we were watching, the two less graceful flyers (obviously juvies in comparison) were calling and chasing another peregrine (we assume it was SW, of course). It was late, so fairly silhouetted, but it had to be Dart and Spike chasing SW."

Update on Ranger as of Friday, June 18th:

Ranger's Condition:
A voice-mail received from Laura Jordan of the Medina Raptor Center about Ranger this afternoon Friday, June 18, 2010. He is still being force-fed and Dr. Riggs is concerned about possible lesions in one eye. Laura said that Dr. Riggs wants to see Ranger challenged in a larger enclosure next week to see if that might stimulate his appetite. It will also allow Dr. Riggs to assess his vision. There will be an update next week to report on any further progress at that time.

Further Update on Ranger's Condition

As of Monday afternoon, Ranger has made very slight improvement over the weekend. He is able to perch but not walk. He has to be force-fed as he refuses food on his own. Laura Jordan of the Medina Raptor Center is worried that his vision is impaired in one eye. The more time he spends down in this condition means the more time it will take to prepare him for release should he make a full recovery. All of this suggests that Ranger is in for a long convalescence and will not be releasable any time soon. I will update when there are changes in his condition.

Update on Ranger from the CMNH site:

I talked with Laura Jordan of the Medina Raptor Center at 2:45 pm on Friday, 6/11/2010. She reported that Ranger made it through last night at Dr. Riggs' veterinary clinic and, though he is very serious condition, there is some slight indication of improvement. He will be returned to Medina Raptor Center for weekend care and then returned to Dr. Riggs for a neurological assessment on Monday. I will post an update on Monday regarding his condition at that time.

Ranger Suffers Head Trauma in Collision with Building

Laura Jordan of the Medina Raptor Center relayed a message to the Museum that a falcon had been recovered on the sidewalk at the base of the Fifth Third Building at 600 Superior Avenue on Thursday at 9:50 AM and was being held in a box by building security. I retrieved the bird at 10:45 am. It was Ranger. He had apparently collided with the building and had collapsed on the sidewalk. No one witnessed the collision so we are unaware of why he hit the building. This is close to the territorial boundary between the Terminal Tower falcons and the Bohn Buildng falcons. So perhaps it was a territorial dispute.

Ranger was very groggy and had blood in his mouth and throat. Though able to stand and responsive to stimuli around him, he definitely was not ready to be released. I brought him back to the Museum and contacted Laura. We agreed that he needed veterinary assessment. He was transported to the Medina Raptor Center and then to Dr. Riggs. At last report (around 5:00 pm Thursday afternoon) Laura expressed deep concern over the head injury and gave a guarded prognosis. His condition had not improved over the course of the afternoon. If anything he was worse.

I will update as we learn more about his condition. We will all be keeping a close eye on SW and the three fledglings. There are numerous examples of a single Peregrine parent successfully caring for its late stage nestlings on its own. SW is clearly very experienced and should be up to the task.

Peregrine falcons are nesting in record numbers; half are in Northeast Ohio

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- On any given day, the fastest flyers in the world perform acrobatics over downtown Cleveland, bringing business meetings to a halt, thrilling lunchtime crowds on Public Square and scattering flocks of terrorized pigeons.

Peregrine falcons, once at the top of the federal Endangered Species list, have bounced back in unprecedented numbers -- especially here in Northeast Ohio.  The region is home to half of the 26 nests with eggs or chicks spotted this spring in Ohio. And the Cleveland area boasts 10 of the nests, including one at Terminal Tower that round-the-clock web cameras beam to a worldwide audience.  What a difference three decades can make.

Before DDT was banned in 1972, pesticide poisoning drove peregrine falcons to the brink of extinction, and completely wiped them out east of the Mississippi River. Soon thereafter, captive-breeding programs using western birds helped to reestablish the species in the East.  The resilient raptors ended up thriving in some of the most improbable settings, such as Cleveland. In fact, the urban landscape proved to be an inviting nesting area, said Harvey Webster, director of wildlife resources at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and a falcon aficionado

The crevices and alcoves of skyscrapers and the walled canyons of downtown streets remind the falcons of their natural nesting environment on the mountain cliffs and ledges of the West. The city also offers an all-you-can-eat supply of pigeons and other flying food. Urban birdwatchers gaze in awe as the crow-size falcons cruise high overhead, surveying potential prey, then tucking their wings and plunging like a fighter jet at speeds up to 200 mph. When the spectacular hunters hit their targets, feathers fly and the stricken birds drop -- usually already dead. The streamlined raptors then pluck their kill in mid-air and carry them to a ledge for casual consumption.

"They are such a thrill to watch," said Webster. "They put on a show like no other."  No peregrine falcons better symbolize the species' successful urban adaptation than those that have resided on a 12th floor window ledge of the Terminal Tower. Peregrines first established residency there in 1988. Since then, three different males and three females have occupied the aerie, fledging more than 50 chicks during that time.

Naturalists from Ohio's Division of Wildlife banded three falcon chicks at the tower on Friday. And three cameras trained on the nest provide images, including the daily meal times, at http://snipurl.com/w8ogb at one-minute intervals.

Many visitors to this website have been concerned about the cables that the falcons have pulled down into the nest tray. They should pose no threat to the chicks in their first three weeks. The only function of the cables is to pull up the 'drawbridge' on banding day so that the chicks stay in the nest. They will be removed at the conclusion of the banding event.

Those cables exactly resemble coax cables used for video/data.  One cable is complete with a camera connector.  I have my doubts about the "Drawbridge" theory.  :(

Well not good news, that pipped egg wasn't hatched 5 days later and this morning reports say only 2 eggs in the nestbox now.  One they had disposed of early in the game to bring it down to 3, now down to 2.

I am waiting to see if she gets up to confirm if it's 2 or 3 still.

First pip reported at CMNH!

First Pip

Scott Wright phoned around noon, Monday April 19th, 2010 to say that he observed a small pip in one of the eggs. It usually takes 24 - 48 hours from pip to hatch so stay tuned to the Falconcam over the next two days to see the hatch. Watch for Scott's updates in his thread in the Forum section of this website.

Ranger seems to like incubating, and he's been doing a really good job. I've noticed that he has been spending quite a bit of time on the eggs, so I think SW must be satisfied. She has a fairly distant perch on a building from which she can see the nest ledge and Ranger . . .

Part Deux - as I exceeded the post limit  :-\

Whatever the scenario, the absence of eggshell remains is curious. In 2007, the broken eggshell could be seen in the nest box for days after it broke. Peregrines will sometimes consume the eggshell remains after the chicks hatch. Possibly for the seven minutes that SW was in the head tuck posture she was consuming the shell fragments right after the egg broke. It is odd that her abdominal feathers did not appear to be soiled. In 2007 SW’s belly feathers were wet from the liquid contents of the egg. Scott Wright’s photos from Tuesday do show what appears to be albumen from the broken egg adhering to two of the surviving eggs.

Though it is a disappointment that S/W will not have another 4 chick season, this is precisely why Peregrine Falcons have clutches of 3 or 4 eggs. This annual productivity compensates for the inevitable losses that occur with eggs, chicks, fledglings and juveniles. Clutch size is a balance between how many young the adults can successfully parent given available internal and environmental resources and the need to produce adequate numbers to sustain the population.

Will there be some evidence at the nest that might indicate what really happened to the mysterious egg? By now it is doubtful. So we might never know the real story.

From the website, the official explanation of the exploding (  :P ) egg!

The Case of the Missing Egg
A mystery unfolded on Monday, 5/29/2010 at the nest on the terminal tower’s 12th floor. 4 eggs in a tight clutch at 12:05 pm. One minute later SW moves over the eggs in an awkward pose as if she is turning the eggs. Ranger shows up at the right side of the nest platform but SW stays in the same pose for the next seven minutes. She finally settles down over the eggs. At the next shift change when the eggs are visible at 3:42 pm, there are only three eggs and no sign of the fourth, no eggshells, nada. What gives?

First, it is not without precedent for SW to lose an egg. It happened in 2007. She laid her first egg, then her second. A day later the second egg broke. She followed with a third and fourth egg. The first egg was covered with the egg whites and yolk from the broken second egg and she avoided incubating the egg for a time. Only the third and fourth eggs hatched that year giving us Erie and Treasure. Erie died at the Terminal later that summer. Treasure is part of a pair at Port Colbourne in Ontario.

So what might have caused the egg to break? Possibly disturbance at the nest site might have caused either S/W or Ranger to accidentally break the egg. We know Peregrines to be very careful and effective parents. However, this is Ranger’s first experience as an incubating adult and he could have been clumsy when attending the eggs. That being said, there is no evidence from the Falconcam archives at the time to suggest that anything was amiss with SW or Ranger. Quite the contrary, everything appeared normal.

Another possibility is that there was an inherent structural deformity in the egg. The formation of the egg in the oviduct of the female is an extremely complicated and resource intensive process. All of the ingredients needed to cook up one new peregrine falcon chick have to be assembled and neatly packaged in a supremely well-designed calcium carbonate container. And this packaging is accomplished in roughly 24 hours. Disturbance to the female at this time or internal challenges, such as pesticides, disease, poor quality diet, or age could compromise the process of forming the shell. The resulting egg lacks the necessary structural integrity and collapses under the weight of the female as she attempts to incubate.

Do any of these attributes apply to S/W? Disease – no, she seems to be very fit and active. Diet - no, she is dining on the finest selection of pigeons, songbirds, woodcock and other birds that a Peregrine Falcon could hope for.

Pesticides or other environmental contaminants are always a possibility with Peregrines. After all it was DDT and other organochlorine pesticides that endangered Peregrine Falcons in the first place. Though DDT was banned over 30 years ago, it is still present in the environment although not at levels that threaten Peregrines. Other toxins like PCBs are a constant threat. New threats are cropping up. For example, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), chemicals widely used as flame retardants, have been identified in Peregrine Falcon eggs in Sweden, Greenland and elsewhere, far from the original source or use of the chemical. What effect these contaminants might have on Peregrines is not well understood.

In S/W’s case however, there is nothing in her past history to suggest any difficulty in producing healthy eggs. Quite the contrary, she has been downright prolific.

That leaves age. SW is 12 years old. Falconers that propagate Peregrines in captivity often report that productivity dramatically drops by the 14th year and they usually retire their birds from breeding at that time. The Peregrine Falcons on display at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Lou and Jean, were obtained from a breeder who retired them for just this reason. SW is creeping up on that age where you might expect to see some egg failure.

Or in the end, perhaps some physical disturbance, passing trauma or environmental stress occurred just before the laying of that egg that compromised the formation of its eggshell. It was simply a ‘bad egg.’ The egg would not have exploded as some have speculated. It would have simply collapsed.

One of SW's eggs may have exploded - they said it looked blue - so now she has three?!  This happened to her before apparently.  What causes that TPC?  She's around 12 I believe, would age be a factor or does this type of thing just happen sometimes?

As amazing a peregrines are, explosive eggs are not one of their many talents.  Looking at the snow in the box, it may be that there was already a flaw with the egg and the cold made it freeze and break ... she or he might have rolled it out knowing there was a problem and ... and ... and ... that's the best I can come up with.  Or I guess the egg could have broken and they broke it up, might that not look like an explosion?  All just wild guesses on my part Carly - I will be very interested to hear what the Cleveland folks say ...

... in case we get exploding eggs too  ;)

Sw laid her fourth egg this morning. Since she and Ranger are incubating in the snow, I haven't had a chance to see the eggs.

Here is Ranger incubating; he must be a little smaller than SW, since he does not fill the circle:

Ranger's family

Ranger is one of four chicks born at Eastlake in 2008. He has a brother, Current, B/93, and two sisters, Rotor (S/42) and Rebel (S/43). I haven't seen photos of Current or Rebel, but Rotor looks as if she, like Ranger, is a good size.

These were taken at the end of last year, when Rotor was in Ontario.

Rotor is a beauty.

Stronger & heavier would make them less maneurverable I'm afraid Elaine, not something one necessarily wants in an urban environment where quick means survival amidst the tall buildings.  I have noticed that there have been more reports recently of birds that were identified as males (think Hurricane and Taku) who turned out to be females.  So the argument could go both ways, some birds are getting much bigger, some may be getting smaller.  Or it could just be natural fluctuations.

Or Ranger could just have big feet for a boy  :D

Ranger is a large male isn't he?  he's almost the same size as her.  I was poking around the Washington site last night and they were talking about the two chicks they banded earlier this year and said the female juvie took the largest band available - a 7B whereas most all females take a 7a and the male took the 7a band!!  They said they had noticed that in the past few years the falcons seem to be larger than in previous years.  I thought that was interesting.  Perhaps adapting to the dangers of buildings in an urban setting by growing larger?  Or just a better diet available to them?

Following up what Carly says, this brings to mind that study they did recently in England, where they found that certain urban birds have, apparently, quickly evolved wing size in order to better fit inside feeders placed outside for them.  I wonder if it is possible, then, that the peregrines now are adapting to the urban environment with stronger, heavier bodies?  It seems to me that this would offer some protection from building strikes.  Perhaps TPC would know something about this.

Ranger and SW

The identity of the new male has been confirmed; he is indeed Ranger, B/92, from the Eastlake nest, born in 2008.  He definitely wants SW, the nest, and the territory. Whether SW will accept him or not will be her decision. SW is an extremely fierce falcon; back in 2002, she killed Buckeye's former mate, the mighty Zenith, in a bitterly-contested territorial battle. Scott Wright went out on to the narrow ledge, on the twelfth floor of the Terminal Tower, without a rope or harness, to bring Zenith inside. He could not leave her lying on the ledge, and I totally understand that.

Over the years since then, SW has become a much loved falcon. She and Buckeye forged a very strong, and gentle, bond. They worked perfectly together each year to incubate their eggs and raise their young. Buckeye was a great provider, and very protective of his family.

Ranger                                                                           SW (left) and Ranger

Ranger seems to be a fairly large tiercel; there is very little size difference between him and SW.

The new male

Scott Wright took some wonderful photos of the new male at the Terminal Tower. He is not yet identified, but the band, black/green, looks very much like B/92 to me. That would mean he is Ranger, born 2008, from the Eastlake Power Plant Nest in Ohio. I think he looks very young, and very nervous.

T-Rex, Trey's Dad, had a full black cap (I'll find a photo for y'all) that has continued through his family though few have had as black a cap as his.  Trey's and Ivy's are good examples though, no brown marks .... and the folks in Omaha remarked on Winnie's (another T-Rex kid) full black cap when she turned up there a decade ago.

I'd love to see a photo of T-Rex! Zeus in Omaha also has a full dark hood.

Buckeye had a great life and spread his genes, the purpose of life.  There are little Buckeye's flying around and one day, one of those falcon's may in fact come back to this nest.  One never knows, but one can hope!

Although Buckeye raised 34 young, little is known about most of them. We know of only three at the moment: Apache, born in 2002, is at the Cleveland Metropark Zoo as an education bird. He lost a wing earlier in his life. Treasure, born in 2007, was last seen at Port Colborne earlier this year (I posted on that thread at the time).

And Buckeye and SW's son Onyx, born in 2006, is in Shaker Heights with his mate, Diana. Last year, they had two chicks, Raider and Shaker. Because the nest site was inaccessible, it was not possible to band the chicks. This year Onyx and Diana had eggs, but they did not hatch, due to the difficulty of the site.  Before we lost Buckeye, plans were already in place to install a nest tray for next year.

All photos are by Chad and Chris.

Onyx: he also inherited Buckeye's solid dark hood -- he is a very handsome tiercel.

This photo of Onyx in his nest territory shows two buildings way in the background. The dark building on the left is the Terminal Tower, where Onyx was raised.

The Midwest report says her name was Maple originally and she was renamed after her hack location which was Aurora, Ontario.  My guess is..and this is just a guess ... based on where they got all their PF"s for the hack program...is that she was born in Wainwright, Alberta at the breeding centre there and is a pure Anatum peregrine falcon.

Maybe you or TPC might know something more about her background? (Band ID: Red 4R0)

I do have a question for you though about Bandit.  On the CPF blog I found a reference to Aurora as being Wind's mother and that her father was unbanded - but I know her father was Bandit.  Was he really not banded and the name Bandit is a pun for 'Band-It' or did they jsut record that incorrectly?

I don't know much about Aurora's background. She was born in 1991, but I don't know exactly where. She was bred by Lynn Oliphant and Paddy Thompson, who are, or were, breeders in Saskatoon. She was released in Maple, Ontario in 1992.

She first appeared in Columbus in 1993, and had an unsuccessful nest that year with Lazer (black band 04Z). They had six eggs, laid on an unsuitable ledge, and all the eggs were lost. Lazer died of tuberculosis in August of 1993. Aurora paired with Bandit in 1994, and they raised three chicks. She was with Bandit until 1998, when she died. She died at The Raptor Center of renal and respiratory failure. She had previously been treated at Ohio State for an unknown illness or toxin for several days.

And yes, Bandit was an unbanded tiercel, but he was so distinctive that he was easily identifiable. No pun in his name that I know of . .  .

The people who found Buckeye and tried to help him came forward and identified themselves in a post on the Cleveland forum. They are Heather Gmucs and Samantha Wandtke. They knew they had found a peregrine, but they didn't know exactly who he was at that time. They deserve a lot of credit for trying to save him.

The new nest tray has been installed, and the work on the ledge and surrounding area looks as if it has been completed. The cams have been down since October because of the construction, and they are still down.

of the Rhodes Tower in Columbus, Ohio                               This is the only photo I have seen of her -- she was beautiful.

Bandit passed on his smooth dark hood to his descendants -- not only to his son Buckeye, but also to Roosevelt at Fort Wayne, Erie at the Cathedral of Learning in Pittsburgh, and Wind in Toronto, among others.

What amazing shots of Buckeye....talk about dedication.  It just goes to show you the natural instinct to protect their eggs.  In one shot, you could barely see him...laying as flat as he possibly could to keep his eggs warm and dry.  He will be missed!

Good luck to SW this season...hope that she will be able to form a tight bond with a new mate and continue bringing new chicks into this world to help their future.

There is indeed a new male, and Chad and Chris photographed him approaching SW, who was eating. She initially mantled her food, but later allowed him to come and share some of the food. He is not yet identified, but I'm sure it won't be long.

An article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer about Buckeye:

Cleveland's peregrine falcon perishes after 12 years nesting on the Terminal Tower

By James F. McCarty,The Plain Dealer
November 23, 2009, 7:00PM

Buckeye, believed to be one of the country's oldest and most prolific peregrine falcons, died last week after apparently striking a building near its urban nest on the Terminal Tower.

A woman walking at the intersection of West Third Street and Huron Avenue discovered the injured male on the sidewalk and called Harvey Webster, director of wildlife resources at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.  Webster said the unidentified woman managed to scoop up the bird and rush it to the museum. But Buckeye was dead by the time she arrived, said Webster, the overseer of the falcons' nesting box 12 floors above Public Square.

"He had a heck of a life and an incredible run during his 12 years on the Terminal Tower," Webster said.

Buckeye was 14 years old, having hatched in 1996 atop the Rhodes Office Tower in downtown Columbus. Officers with Ohio's Division of Natural Resources attached an identifying leg band on the chick before he left the nest.  As an adult, he flew north and spent two years on the Case Western Reserve University campus before pairing up with a female, Zenith, on the downtown Cleveland skyscraper.  In 2001, a second female, hatched in Pittsburgh and identified only as S/W, arrived in Cleveland and killed Zenith. She then joined Buckeye at the nest.

Between the two females, Buckeye sired 34 peregrine chicks, an amazing accomplishment for a species that was endangered for decades, Webster said.  Buckeye was getting old, but he hadn't missed a beat incubating the eggs or providing food for his chicks, Webster said.   Webster speculated that Buckeye's fatal collision might have come during an aerial battle with another male. The falcons can dive at up to 200 mph.

The males may have been battling for S/W's affections. The past weekend, downtown falcon watchers had observed S/W in the company of a new male. He has a leg band, but no one has been able to read its identification numbers yet.  Webster said Cleveland's falcon enthusiasts aren't as willing as S/W to adopt the interloper. They had become attached to Buckeye over the years, and have been mourning, he said. Many Buckeye fans have been posting tributes on-line, and Scott Wright -- who dubbed him "Mr. B" -- downloaded dozens of photographs that he shot of the bird from close range.

To read the tributes and see the photos, visit the museum's falcon Web site at www.falconcam-cmnh.org.

Buckeye was actually born in 1996, so he was 13 years old.  He was an extremely handsome tiercel, with a very expressive face.

This is absolutely devastating news. I cannot believe that Buckeye, one of the most beloved of all peregrines, is gone. He will be remembered as one of the truly great tiercels: a wonderful father, an exceptional mate for SW, so protective of his family.

It would seem that there must have been a territorial battle - Buckeye was far too intelligent, and far too familiar with his surroundings, to collide with a building otherwise.

I am grateful to the woman who tried to save Buckeye. It was a kind thing for her to do.

This whole situation is just heartbreaking. I never had the privilege of seeing Buckeye in person, but I will never forget him.  :'(  :'(

I will post some photos of Buckeye. I'm not at home right now to access my archives.

Either could certainly be the case Carly.  Even during a half-hearted dog-fight* accidents can happen in a highly urbanized environment.  We have found that the winds are very fluky (changeable, gusty, etc) in and around our tall buildings downtown and it would be the same where Buckeye lived I'm sure.  A moment's inattention while keeping an eye on a potential rival could have been all it took.  Or some male bluster while fancy-flying with a windshift could have thrown him against a building.

Perhaps after the necropsy, there will be some more information - the primary location of the injury might suggest a cause.

* I say half-hearted because I'm not sure how intense non-breeding season territorial battles are - I suspect that some are much more territorial than others depending on the individual birds involved.  I have noticed that outside the breeding season here, our birds (who are distinctly territorial) are much more laid-back, vigilant, but not so quick to respond with deadly intent

There are reports of a new adult male in the area, he was seen with SW yesterday afternoon and some photos are now up on CMNH board of him from a distance with SW, he was displaying some fancy flying and SW bowing to him as he approached.  Only speculation as no one saw what happened that has yet come forward but him losing his territory makes more sense to me - although it still sucks - than a falcon with his experience just accidently hitting the building.

Thank you for that report Carly....

How upsetting that it was most likely a collision with a window and/or building as you pointed out Carly.  Again, I know it doesn't matter to falcons but he didn't die alone.  Nothing should die alone.  Fly Free Buckeye!!!

From the CMNH Falcon Site:

Buckeye - 1996-2009
I am very sad to report that Buckeye was found on a sidewalk by West 3rd and Huron Rd in downtown Cleveland this afternoon and died in transit to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. It appears that he sustained fatal head injuries. He had a long and distinguished career at the Terminal Tower with Zenith and S/W and sired many, many young.

Buckeye Update
To follow up on my last post, this is what I know. A lady walking on West 3rd and Huron found Buckeye on the sidewalk clearly in distress and barely responsive. She covered him with her coat and contacted me at the Museum about 1:40 pm on Tuesday, 11/17/09. She offered to transport Buckeye to the Museum so that we could assess his condition and expedite his transportation to the Medina Raptor Center or Lake Metroparks Clinton Wildlife Center. When she arrived at the Museum around 2:10 pm Buckeye had already expired. I confirmed his identity by the R/K color band and notified the Ohio Division of Wildlife. We will have a necropsy performed at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo today. However it is clear that, without a mark on his body and blood streaming from his mouth, Buckeye sustained a fatal head injury consistent with a window or building collision. A necropsy might reveal if there were any underlying health issues. My examination suggested he was in good health and plumage with no sign of other conditions or injuries that might have contributed to his death.

I will be spending time at the Terminal Tower this afternoon to assess the work being done on the ledge and I will keep an eye out for S/W.

This is is a difficult time of transition for all of us falcon enthusiasts who have become so attached to the lives of Buckeye, S/W and their offspring. This is also a time of transition for S/W. It is my hope that her long term attachment to this very successful site will hold and she will recruit a new mate in the coming weeks or months.

I will keep you updated with any news.

I know Carly....I'm trying to react better to these situations, but as you wrote, we don't have to like it!

Buckeye had a great life and spread his genes, the purpose of life.  There are little Buckeye's flying around and one day, one of those falcon's may in fact come back to this nest.  One never knows, but one can hope!

For the love of Falcons.......

Know how you feel Carly, every spring I dread a new male replacing Trey (hatched 1995) and I hold my breath with every dead/injured peregrine phone call I get during the spring/summer/fall ....

With genes like Buckeye's it will be neat to see how his kids do, I'm sure you and Alison will keep us informed on anything you hear!!

Maybe Alison will have more information, she must be devastated as all of the board is I'm sure.  He had a large, loyal following.  We just keeping losing all the prolific males, I know it's the cycle of life...but I don't have to like it  >:(

That's so cool that they are being considerate to the pair and returning their nest box in the evenings.  I can only imagine what they must be thinking about the box coming and going like that!  I guess though as long as it comes back then it's okay with them  ;)

Buckeye and SW have to deal with ongoing construction at the Terminal Tower, including renovations in the immediate area of their nest. This has necessitated removing their nest tray during the day, and replacing it at the end of the day. However, the falcons have handled this extremely well so far.

Both visited the nest tray this morning:

Could be that the stress caught up with him ... it is not unknown for the birds to be doing well or responding well one day and drop dead the next.  Still sucks though.

If someone gets more information, please do make sure to post it here !

Lunge is back in care again! He was found on the ground in Madison, Ohio, and is currently in rehab. He has a soft tissue wing injury in the wrist area. I think with that type of injury he should be okay after rehab.

Soft tissure injuries usually respond well to rest and rehab ... might mean he should have a bit more recouperation the first time around - BUT I don't know enough about his first injury to say for sure, it's just a guess ...

Those photos of Lunge are beautiful, Alison! And yes, allikat, I love his "walk of determination" as he marches and flies off to freedom. I only hope that he will be equally determined, on his next release from rehab!

Good news about Lunge. It turned out he did not have a coracoid injury (which would have meant a broken collarbone); he had a swollen and bruised wing.  He has been released.

One of Buckeye and SW's juvies this year, Lunge (band 70/B), has been found injured at the airport and has been taken to the Medina Raptor Center. Apparently Lunge has a coracoid injury, but looks fairly good at this point.

Do you know how old the chicks were at banding?

As Carly mentioned, the first chick hatched on April 18th. The second chick hatched during the night of April 18-19, and the third hatched on April 21. Twenty-one days is generally considered a good age for banding; old enough so that their legs are pretty much the size they are going to be (in order to use the correct band size), and young enough so that the chicks are not going to be inclined to go over the edge.

The chicks were named 'Strike' (Female), USFWS band 1687-30212 34/H; 'Lunge' (Male). USFWS band 1126-06620 70/B; and 'Cirrus' (Male), USFWS band 1126-06621 71/B. The bands on the left leg are black/red this year.

I haven't had time yet to watch all the videos and look at all the photos of the banding, but I noticed that there are also outstanding photos by Chad and Chris, Scott and others.

First chick hatched on April 18th so they were around 3 weeks old which is typically when you want to band them...before they get any ideas about trying to attempt to fly off the ledge in their panic....

I too feel bad seeing the parents so helpless but boy they put up a good fight!  Thankfully they didn't get hurt taking runs at the window...that kind of scared me I must admit.

Wow!!!  Those were incredible!!!  Did you see the falcon attack the one on the head?  Direct hit!  Thank goodness he had a helmit on!
When I watch that, I feel so terrible for the parents as all they are stressed and all they are doing in protected their young.  I know this is for their recovery and I'm all for banding to be able to track them and the histoty.  But, you just feel helpless for the adults who have to watch intruder's taking away their babies who are also crying out for help from their parents!
All in all, they were banded, all is okay and no falcon was hurt or injured and the chicks are back in their parents care!

If you want to see some superb videos of yesterday's banding in Cleveland of Buckeye and SW's chicks.... they are outstanding!!

Oh and turn down your headphones because the screaming parents will burn your eardrums.  And watch them attack..it's freaken awesome!!

The links are in this post at Rochester yahoo group and the Cleveland board also has them posted directly by the person bobby who made them.  I didn't want to post the direct links as I don't know him and didn't want to post anything without person's approval.

2009 NESTING SEASON

One of my favourite thngs is when a juvie from a previous year turns up somewhere else at a later date. One of the juvies from the Terminal Tower in Cleveland has now been found nesting in Pittsburgh - what is remarkable is that he was born in 1999! He is Bravo, band black/green V/H. He and his mate are nesting on the McKees Rocks Bridge, and they are incubating five eggs. They laid eggs last year on a girder on the bridge, but the nest failed. At that time it was not known who he was.

Bravo is a son of the legendary Zenith and her earlier mate Bullet. He is one of four chicks they raised in 1999.

Photo of Bravo by Beth Fife.
