IL / Chicago - Millennium Park - 2015

The four Millennium Park chicks fledged successfully. One of the juvies was rescued earlier in the summer from an interior courtyard; she was not injured.

From the Chicago Peregrine Program:

Sometimes our urban Peregrine fledglings end up somewhere that at first glance looks like a good/safe place to be. In reality, not so.

Recently one of our fledglings landed in just such a situation. Buildings that have inner courtyards that go several stories deep are problematic for the young birds. Walled in on all four sides. the only way out of the "canyon" is up and out.

There's room enough for a Peregrine to do this but it's just something the inexperienced flyer can't figure out. Sometimes they are where we can grab them, sometimes we have to wait until they reach the bottom. Either way, the only thing they need is a lift to the roof and then they are good to go.

The little girl in the picture is one of our Millennium Park young. She was released on the roof of the courtyard building and immediately took off flying strongly. Thanks to all the building occupants who kept watch over her!

I noticed at this site that the parents would often bring food for the chicks very late in the evening, and after midnight, even when the chicks were older.

This is the fifth year for peregrines to occupy this site. The resident female, banded black/green V/S, was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 2003. The resident male is unbanded.

The nest is on a balcony outside the offices of an interior design company. The company, "In Your Space", is very supportive of the peregrines, and really appreciates the birds.

Four eggs were incubated, and four chicks hatched. They are now close to fledging.
