hey everyone, just catching up on my reading, yes that night last year was gut wrenching, my goodness was up ALL nite worrying and fretting and one of us , not sure who, even tryed to call the power plant! It turned out, I think, to be maybe some left over lunch sticking out of her crop?? TPC thought anyhow, we sure thought it looking like a tab off of a can. That was an awful nite! I think it was a tab, stuck to the animals leg or what not which was sticking out of her mouth. Maybe it came off as her food got digested, we will never know and obviously she was alright after. Whew!

Yes, we thought there was a drink tab on mum's beak. 
"ghost image" - that's the word(s) I was looking for. 

Ah, the memories of that worrisome, long night! Liz, myself, and Deedream (has anyone heard from her this year?) were very concerned mum couldn't open her beak due to the long white thing, that did seem to move with her though... TPC knew there wasn't anything wrong, but I think we had a hard time convincing ourselves it was true because the visual was so hard to ignore (we did eventually    give over to the greater knowledge and authority    of all things peregrine...thanks TPC!)  -- it sounds like we now have an explanation for the visuals -- thanks pchemist  .

must be warm in Elk River.  The kids are all panting.  There are some great close-ups at the cam right now.  The awkard stage is starting in earnest!

A feeding!  all four chicks lumber over for their share.  I think it's dad doing the feeding, and the chicks are all as big as him!!!

There was something last year - pretty sure there was something about something stuck on the females beak?? or something similar as I recall.

optics is the way light reflects (bounces) and refracts (bends) with lenses and mirrors and such.  Because there is a bright external light and a fisheye lens, it's not surprising to see some ghost images on the lens.  it may have been moved slightly during cleaning, or the cleaning may have left a substance on the lens that now interacts differently with the light.  I'm not sure if we saw it last year or not, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I know you're right.  Did we see this last year?  I don't remember it.  I guess I need to know what you mean by optics.  It's not really there, just an absurd accumulation of molecules?
