About The Tom’s Canyon Nest (2022)

How Old Are The Adults And How Long Have They Been Together?
The parents of the chick in the Tom’s Canyon nest are mom #846 and dad #462. Dad #462 hatched in 2008 and mom #846 hatched in 2017. This is the pair’s first nesting attempt together. #462 has nested twice before in 2018 and 2020; both attempts were successful in Tom’s Canyon with previous mate, female #594. This is five-year old #846’s first year nesting.

How Can You Tell Which One Is The Male And Which One Is The Female?
In this nesting territory, male #462 wears a white tag with a black “62”, which represents the 400 studbook series, and female #846 wears a pink tag with a black “46”, which represents the 800 studbook series. The studbook number for the chick is #1160. When the nestling is four months old, he/she will also receive a handmade wing tag with a sewn-in radio transmitter. This tag will be black with white lettering.

When Was The Egg Laid And When Did The Chick Hatch?
Female #846 laid the pair’s single egg on March 19, 2022. After 56 days of incubation, the chick hatched on May 14, 2022.

Where Is This Nest Located?
This condor nest is located near the Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge in Ventura County, California.

Do The Condors Use The Same Nest Each Year?
Sometimes. They typically nest in the same general area as condor pairs tend to establish a nesting territory. Pairs will sometimes use the same nest year after year but other times they will move to a new cavity within their territory from year to year. This is a cavity that was used by #462 and a previous mate in 2018 and 2020.

Has This Condor Pair Been Featured On Cornell’s Bird Cams Before?
This is the first appearance on the cam for both male #462 and female #846.
