how did the chicks do. this is heartbreakin g.  So sorry.

Hart and Dot had two chicks - a male (Horus) and a female (Pakhet).  As best I can tell, the chicks had fledged and were doing well prior to Hart's death.  After Hart's death, I didn't see Dot or her kids at all at West Winnipeg.  But that could just have been timing, or it could have been that the chicks were able to follow after Dot as she went about hunting and teaching them how to be big peregrines.

I did get a report that Pakhet died west of Portage la Prairie a month later but I don't have any more details yet.

with many tears, that was a wonderful tribute.  As I read this I think of my beautiful Radisson from Winnipeg who will migrate maybe even today. she is 16 . every year I bid her farewll and wonder what her migration will unfold. As Hart is your heart. Radisson has been th e heart of Edmonton.
she has a grandson nesting at another of our sites this  year.  Such a formidable gal, and so Princess produced strong offsrping.
my hope is that some more  of Harts offspring are found nesting.

hugs TRacy and those who followed Hart

Going through West Wpg Banding Day photos wasn’t the easiest task to do…but some things we have no control over and still hard to believe that Hart is no longer here.

As an update, I can confirm that Hart did not die because of avian flu.
Likely it was just and accident, a zig rather than a zag.

How sad this is for the peregrine community.
As a supporter for many years in Winnipeg, I would pass by the West and report on sightings.
I unfortunately did not get the honour of witnessing Hart’s presence and perseverance of the West End territory, but was able to catch up thanks to this forum.
Another harsh lesson to us humans on how precious they are, and how lucky we are to be part of the unknown, but continue to learn from it.
Fly free Hart - you will be missed!

Wow - what a beautiful story to honour Hart's history in Winnipeg - hope Dot and the kiddies will be ok without him.  :'(

Simply the saddest thing ever!  TPC, your blog told Hart's story so well.  Your love and knowledge of these incredible birds is so evident as it was when we lost Princess.   :-* :'(

Not since we checked on them last.  The camera and recorder work fine, we just have to make arrangements to visit the site and get access to our camera/computer equipment to check on them.  We have a plan to check on the chicks tomorrow - the weather looks good and the chicks are old enough to be uncovered so hopefully we will have a good opportunity to check out the chicks and their development in advance of setting a banding date.

Will be sure to post a note and photos when we do.

We have a month and a bit to catch up with these two ... easiest to put together a blog entry/entries with the timeline but I have a bunch of photos to process.  We can't download directly from the recorder at the moment so I have to manual format photos taken of the images on the computer screen.  Works out well enough, just a bit labour intensive.  Hope to get through it this week.  Will post the link to the blog entry here and on the twitter feed.  For the moment, Hart and Dot are fine - cold and wet and I so hope will take time to enjoy the warm DRY weather forecast for this week!  They have two eggs that look fine and they have been rockstars keeping them dry and warm so far.  And they are a nice partnership in terms of incubating and with each other from what we could see on camera.  Will be interesting to see how they work together come banding time!!

You will notice I haven't updated the names on this Board - have to confirm it is the female he was with earlier at the Radisson.  She has an noticeable identifier, so if it is her, I will update the subject line.  And yes, if it is her, we have a name for her ready and waiting  ;D

Technology is wonder but when there’s a hiccup you need to put The Boots to The Ground and do it The Old Fashion Way.
West Winnipeg Gallery has been started with more photos to be added when available.
