I guess Fiona's half brother Wingo likes it at the McKenzie site, I saw him on the building after work. :o  8)

Fiona is definitely still in town - she was bowing to a male on the east side ledge this morning befor the rain began. Male didn't stay long but looked like Pip at a distance. Having said that, Hart is usually a late departed so can rule him out trying to get cozy with the new girl - it is sort of what he does i the spring and fall. He is nicely predictable that way. And always a gentlemen, he always comes to the ladies not vice versa.  We will have to see what happens next year with Fiona and Pip and with Hart.

Haven't seen anybirdie on the west nest for a few days now - and Fiona, NEVER MIND the EAST side.  ::) - Hopefully if you come back next year, you'll nest on the WEST and we'll have a cam to watch you, and it'll be a good season of peregrine watching!!!  ;D

Still at least one bird around...traveling through downtown at around 1:30 and a bird perched on the nestbox. No binos for better viewing  but would say it was a female.

Yup - it is Fiona - she's been checking on the work on the east side of the building  :)

Saw a birdie enjoying the sights on the west nest last evening. - Assume it was a kiddie as it looked brown.
Too bad it was another quiet summer at the Radisson.  :-\
Last year it was the good nest and no babies.
This year is was the bad nest and no cam to view there.
Plus no news about what happened to Princess.  :(
Hopefully next year there will be lots of action!  :D

No idea what happened to Princess after the spring fight - and wondered if she was the aggressor during the fall fight but no way to tell - cam was zoomed out too much.

With luck (and a little plotting on our part) we hope that whoever comes back next spring - Fiona (who was a worthy successor hard as it may be for me to admit) or Princess or someone entirely new - will find the west side nestbox more to their liking.  Fiona can't really be faulted, it was her first year here and there was a lot of necessary work on the building though they did try to schedule around the birds.  Next year should (knock on wood) be quieter we hope.

And Fiona's and Pip's kids have done well so far as we can tell.  Hopefully we will see them back again even if they are unbanded!

And your napper on the nestbox was likely Fiona - she's seems to back to the perch she favoured in the spring - which we hope is a good sign for next year :)

:'( so very sad, do you know how the other chicks are?

They are so mobile now it is hard to keep track of them but when I saw them yesterday, they were fine.  Going to try to post a video clip of birds flying overhead - not very good, but not bad either!!
I'll attach the link to the tweet when here.

you and yours deserve to know.  It is important enough.
Does not feel good at this point.  It’s disturbing actually.

It is likely the person who picked the bird up has no idea what it is or that it should be turned over to the provincial government. How many of us stop to pick up small creatures hit by cars, how many of us report individual birds that hit the windows of our homes?  What we know about, we do.  We know about peregrines, most of the world does not.    And if the bird was tossed in the garbage, it wouldn't be the first time in the history of the project and it was good of the person not to leave a dead creature on a public thoroughfare.  Most folks walk right past those things and assume someone else will deal with it.

And yes, it was just unfortunate that the folks who reported were unable to retrieve it but not their fault they don't travel with large plastic bags and have a freezer to put the body in until it could get picked up.  Most folks don't.  It is fortunate however that they reported it however otherwise we would never know even that much.

And who knows what we may hear, the world is a funny place, sometimes things that seem impossible, aren't.

No news to date - have notified all sorts of folks in the downtown area and the government so perhaps someone will mention it, but just as likely, or maybe more likely, we won't hear anything ... mostly we find the chicks that die in town though admittedly over the years, some have probably slipped past us.  Once they get outside the City however, our chances of finding them should they run into problems is very small.  Kind of balances it out I guess.

Managed to connect with Kimberley but she couldn't take with her as she was on her way to an appointment.  Now I'm hunting for the person who retrieved the chick's body ... hunt continues ... almost as bad as not being able to find them when they fledge!!

More news as I have it.

Apparently we have a bird that died but it was picked up before I could get to it or before the first reporter good grab a bag to take it with him. A woman named Kimberley gave me a call but didn't leave her phone number so if you know a Kimberly that works or lives downtown who might be inclined to pick up a dead peregrine - please reach out to her and get her to phone or email me with her name and phone number and I will arrange for a pick up.

Thanks!

Thanks TPC - Any news on sibling 2?

By the time I left downtown - Chick 1 was still on the nestledge window ledge and seemed perfectly happy, cool and safe. Chick 2 was on a south facing window ledge and Chick 3 was still on the nestledge.  Now we have 3 on the move.  Chick 3 fledged intentionally this morning at 0700h.  It is windy, hot and humid and no one is moving so we don't know where they are at the moment.  Plan is to go check on them when it gets cooler/quieter and they are more likely to move around again.

Saw your post on the Logan Cam site - 2 fledges, 1 intentional and 1 not.  :o - So just one kiddie left on the ledge now? - Hope everyone is ok!  :-*

Chick still on the ledge seems to be willing to wait.  Has been tucked up in the sun along the wall and occasionally goes to look out from the wall, but hasn't been up on the wall all morning.  Sibling one is only about 8-10 feet below (or hopefully is still there) so they can still talk.

Fiona was on the west side nestbox a few minutes ago preening, so she seemed pretty calm about the whole fledging thing ...

Any option of moving the camera feed from 'Tot' to these chicks at some point?  ;)

Not I'm afraid, the contrast on the feed is brutal and it is not streaming nicely - wants to constantly refocus which is murder when you are watching it - almost makes you see sick.  Fortunately the screen captures I can get are so fast that they mostly eliminate the problem.

Not really surprising, most cameras have a limited lifetime in our harsh weather conditions.  Only one that seems to work no matter what is the SkyCam on the east side but we haven't figured a way to talk to it - it's software doesn't like to talk to the new software on computers and cellphones.  We keep trying to find workarounds and so long as it is happy, we will leave it up and running and eventually we will get access.

chick piles are always cute ... funny thing, if it were warmer, the chicks would be spread out more and it would look more like a crime scene than a cute chick pile!

The chicks have been just fine today - no getting blown around in the wind or anything.  They have been sitting up and napping and being fed.

The storms aren't guaranteed to drop a lot of rain, if we are lucky, more noise than anything else.  First storm set is supposed to have the most rain and it will pass by 10pm and then there is another chance of rain after 1am but with much lower volumes.

Looks like Fiona understands what she is supposed to do, so I think she will move the chicks where she has too.  Also the chicks are 7 days old now - not out of the woods but much closer to being able to thermoregulate than not being able to, hopefully that will help.

So while they aren't out of danger, keep your fingers crossed that the storms overnight hold off dropping their rain until they have passed over the City and that tomorrow, the rain is periods of light rain with periods of no rain and (knock on wood) everyone will be okay.

I agree the ledge this wknd will be a constant concern on our minds.  Really dreading this.  As long as the rains don’t flood the ledge I’m hoping these parents stay close and shelter the chicks.

I don't think there are many - if any - who 'like' the horrid east ledge. - I have often wished it would just fall off the side of the building (off season) and disappear.  :-X
That said - Woohoo!! - First chick for Pip & Fiona - fingers crossed for good weather in the next few weeks for this family!  :-* 8)

I hate the dreaded East ledge! Eggs laid...33 days  (approximately) hatch. Here in Winnipeg, the hatch is often followed by severe thunderstorms. The results....tragedy for our chicks/eggs.  :'(

So we have a 2019 hatch at the Radisson.  This feels good.   Off the top of my head I think Vesper was the last fledge I observed on the east side.

So far Fiona is sticking tight to her eggs and the rain hasn't filled up the low part of the ledge yet, so they have room yet .. if the rain isn't constant, they may pull this off ... well until the next rain which if you believe the forecast is coming right about the time the chicks should be hatching or just hatched.  But its a long-range forecast so that might change ...

Rain has stopped at the Radisson but blowy ...

Yes stupid birds!  :-\ - I thought it was only Princess who had some sort of weird affection for that dang ledge.  ::)
And it is pouring out there - I'm trying not to think about the misery those birds will endure all day trying to keep the eggs dry & warm.  :(

Hi TPC,

Every year you have names for the chicks, and you come up with some great themes for these names. I was wondering if you would consider names from the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 for this year?

I have been Dupre ... male names are easier, however very few women weren't identified by name so that makes it a bit tricky.  Also, not everyone identified was necessarily identified for "good" (aka legal) reasons.  But I am looking :)

How did Fiona and the eggs fare after the heavy rain yesterday TPC?  ???

Eggs did just fine by all appearances - haven't seen them today, the adults have been keeping them firmly covered as it is very sunny on the east side in the mornings.  Bit cool out there in the shade, so may not seem them this afternoon either, but I will be scouring through the recordings this evening to see.

Adults got very wet and yes, there was a bit of water in the low point at the far end (near end in photos) but the gravel remained drier around the birds than I think it has in the past.  Might be a bit more piled up there or ??  In any case, all look fine.

There was supposed to be close to 100mm of rain forecast for next week but the north winds that brought us these cooler, sunnier days seem to have pushed that weather system out of the area, so while there is still some rain in the next couple of weeks, so long as it doesn't come down in a torrent, the adults should be the only ones getting wet.

Seems that it is nesting season everywhere. Darn that ledge! I suppose peregrines atop hilly peaks would be just as exposed to all the bad weather.  :(

Thanks to everyone and TPC for all the info.

I was at the zoo today to see the stingrays. The traveling exhibit is starting later this month but today was for members only.

Saw the bald eagles sitting on a nest. The nest is tucked into the wall. Between the branches, that make up the protective wall,  are small openings so you can see the birds up close and personal. An amazing experience.

(And hopefully there will at least be a sighting of Princess so we know she's ok)  :-*

We will always keep an eye out for Princess, no worries!

And as much as I love Princess, Fiona is so far a pretty solid resident female which is nice to see in a first time nester.  She's been velcroed to her eggs for the last few days, rain or shine.  I don't know whether to hope her eggs don't hatch so her chicks aren't at risk if we have poor weather OR hope they do because I'd like to see what she does next.  Pretty good bloodlines in this bird too, - Miracle had a good tenure in Fargo with Annie, Terminator was kick butt in Grand Forks (Fiona's grandmother), Frieda (Fiona's other grandmother), Phoebe (Terminator's mom), Maud (Phoebe's mom) and MF-1 in Minneapolis (through Frieda & Terminator/Phoebe/Maud) were all pretty darn successful resident females.  Will be interesting to see if she lives up to her ancestry!

Well I have to admit, although I'm sad about Princess not being at the Radisson for the first time in ages  :-\  and although it would also be the first time in ages with no web cam at that site  :( - the dang east ledge site does tend to be hard to watch.  ::)
(I'm not talking about technical issues, which of course are also a factor).
I've spent a few seasons fretting.... and crying..... and cursing  ;).... over that location's dramas over the years.  :-X - I really do want to see what's going on and how they're all doing - but when things go wrong - man that's upsetting to see.  :'(
Nature doesn't always do what we would like of course.
So whatever you decide TPC, I will as usual, watch the good with the bad at whatever site is chosen. - Good luck to all the Winnipeg nests this year!  :-* 8)

Rain didn't hit the nest ledge until about 0610h (it's 0726h now) so Fiona is a bit wet but the rain hasn't been long enough or hard enough to be a worry for the eggs.

Do you know yet if there will be a live cam on the ledge TPC?  :)

Two part answer again ...
1) we are working on the cam details now with our eye to the usual launch prior to eggs hatching.  But  until it goes live, it is still a work in progress.
2) not sure if we will stream from the Radisson nestsite this year ... the east side ledge is a tough one to watch, not because it has a higher mortality rate than other nestistes (though that doesn't help) but rather because the camera can only zoom in so close AND when zoomed in, is very affected by the weather - in particular, wind.  Any little breeze shakes the camera and those shakes are much more noticeable when we are zoomed in on the nestledge.  Also the heat radiating off the building causes distortions in the image, so the camera is constantly refocusing - again makes it less viewable.  Those are technical considerations.  On the operational side, we won't be able to see the chicks well at the Radisson (not enough zoom) whereas we could get that at the West Winnipeg site or perhaps even at the Logan site.  And then there are the moms.  Ella (West Wpg) did really well last year with her one chick, this year she could have a trio but she should do just as well.  Spencer (Logan) sucked at the start and got better and hopefully this year will see her really shine but we will have to wait and see.  Fiona (Radisson) is a bit of a wild card.  She's done everything right up to this point so I'm hopefully she will do well at hands-on-motherhood as well.  I do have a concern that her eggs may have suffered as a result of the fight in the nestbox.  And being honest, I'm concerned about bad weather on that darn ledge.

So we are working on the technical details of the camera at the moment and will make a final decision on which nestsite to stream later.  And as an FYI, we streamed from the West Wpg nestbox once before I think ... but can't remember why ... maybe the year Princess lost eggs on the nestledge ... going to have to go back through the records I guess.

Could this possibly be the 'Challenger' that Fiona had the fight with? - Or do you still think it may have been Princess?  ???

Two questions here

Nope, no bands on either leg on the Visitor Bird.  Easy to see on the bird's first visit as it (I believe she) sat right in front of the balcony cam and it picks up light differently because of the angle.  Second night, bird came in for a landing that showed both legs with nary a piece of bling on them.

Do I think Fiona's Challenger was Princess? Yes.  Princess has a bi-coloured band on one leg and her "silver" band is anodized so shows pink.  A couple of times during the video as the birds rolled and slashed past the camera, I saw these same colours on leg bands.  Could it have been another bird with this combination? Yes, but the combination was only used for a few years and the only one we have had is Princess.  The behaviour fits as well.  Fiona was napping on the box edge and barely missed being barrelled into by the arriving bird.  The number of times I have seen Princess arrive at her box this way in the Spring, well, I've almost lost count.  Usually no one is here waiting for her so there is a lot of yelling and posturing and then she's back in command.  It is not however the first time Princess has had a knock-down drag out fight.  A few years ago she looked fine one morning and 3 hours later looked like heck.  And for a bird that hates the inside of the nestbox unless she's got eggs or small chicks, she spent 3-4 days & nights napping safely undercover.  So Princess knows how to fight and win, and likely would have here I think had Fiona not been here so long and been a week away from laying eggs and therefore very committed to holding onto "her" nestsite.

(and yes, we continue to look for Princess wherever we are travelling and working  :))

Is there a camera set up where we can watch, I remember Shaw had one but haven't seen it for awhile.  It was on YouTube too.

There is a camera at the Radisson and we are working on the webcam arrangements for this year.  Not sure it will be the Radisson though, in part because the east side cam is much more exposed to the wind, so when we zoom in, even a lighter wind can make the camera shake and that doesn't make for good viewing.  It may be that this year's cam will be Ty and Ella at West Winnipeg or maybe even Spencer and Hart at Logan.

As for when the cam will be viewable, that will depend on which nestsite we decide to go with and getting the camera streams all tested to make sure they are stable for viewing.  YouTube Live was designed for short events - like a concert or a day long event.  Leaving it running for weeks at a time sometimes gives it headaches.  We can deal with the headaches we would just like to make sure we have as few of them as possible as we know how frustrating it can be for viewers.

More news on the cameras when I've got a few more details sorted out, but since we are still in the egg-laying phase, I suspect y'all have got at least another couple of weeks to wait.  If it all goes smoother than we suspect (based on past experience) then we will certainly launch it sooner.  And yes, we will for sure let folks know when we are going live!  ;D

Up-date required...just sayin  ???

Dennis was up very early this morning as saw a second egg at the Radisson.  Nothing there last night before it got too dark to see on-camera so definitely laid in the dark hours :)  Will be interesting to see how many Fiona lays in total and how many hatch given the ferocity of last week's fight in the nestbox.

Hopefully we can at least learn if that was Princess who was fighting for her nest - and if she's ok.  :-\ - I think I'd rather she didn't come back at all than think of her as banished from her kingdom  :'( - then as Susha says we can imagine her enjoying a well-earned restful retirement elsewhere.  :-* ;D

Sigh, indeed. :-\   After fighting fiercely for the nest box, why did Fiona turn her back and lay on the ledge?  pffft! birdbrain...

I'm not a fan of the east-side ledge as you all know but I think perhaps Fiona gets some leeway this year.  Young bird, new to Manitoba, first time as a resident female and what all that entails, hellacious (yes, there really is no other way to describe it) fight in the nestbox and first time at the Radisson which is different from being a resident female because there is more activity at the Radisson on a daily basis than other places which she just wouldn't be used to yet - including window-washing and some exterior wall inspections.  We watched Pip sitting on the roof watching everything quietly but this would all be new and probably freaky for Fiona, especially after the fight.  So I'm willing to give her a pass on her choice this year but if she's back next year, her choice of nestsite needs to improve.  ;)

Last year Princess had a mate but an empty nest, and this year looks to be without mate and nest.
I'm wanting to believe this, No news is good news.  Perhaps Princess will now head off to the marsh to hang with juvies who also aren't breeding this year.
Are peregrines hardwired to know how to retire?

Do peregrines know how to retire, well Madame remained in the City for two summers after Princess replaced her at the Radisson.  Burnsie hung out at the St Boniface Basilica for a couple of years too I think.  And though not quite the same, Trey had a very successful career as an ambassador after he was injured on migration and Beau is doing well as a breeding bird.  So are peregrines hardwired to retire, most don't survive long enough to find out.  Can some birds have a retirement, the answer is yes. How many I couldn't say, perhaps more of our birds have over the years retired to a life of marsh-surfing, no way to really know.

I agree with you, Bally!  Princess has been there every year since I've been following as well.  Seems surreal to have someone else in her territory.  I wish all the best for Fiona of course, but it just seems all wrong for Princess to be ousted.  When you think of it though, who else would fight so hard for this nest site?  :'(

Oh NO!!! - I hope it wasn't Princess - I mean I'd love to see her back.... but not to have her injured and lose a major fight like that.  :-\ - Last time she came back to town, everyone cleared out for her - but it seems Fiona is a little spitfire!  :-X

radisson was 2 when she came to Edmonton. she had to fight for the nest.
she had one chick that first year ( 2 eggs) . she nested late. so all is possible
she has never looked  back
so fingers crossed.

I realize that I'm in denial and most certainly sentimental, but until there's reason to know otherwise, I'm going to believe that Princess is finished raising kids and is still down south, sipping on a martini and that the Challenger is simply another female after the prime real estate. ;)

Ella had a much shorter but very vigorous fight with Faith last year and in the end had just 1 of 4 viable eggs. Neither Faith nor Ella had any noticeable injuries or impairments yet having been with Hart for I believe more than a month, Faith who was no shy retiring female lost to Spencer who was not nearly her equal. I wasn't sure if at 2 years Fiona would nest successfully, it's a kind of grey period when they should be able to but don't or do but don't have viable eggs. Fiona is young based on her behaviour - she wasn't really interested in Pip's advances or wasn't responding as though she did. Maybe just a slow start as he has been very attentive. Now I wonder if she does lay eggs will they be viable ... and what will be her (and Pip's) response if they are non-viable.  Heck don't even know when we might have eggs - new pairings often take a bit longer at first.

All we can do is wait and see I guess ....😶

please do not think because one bird lost a nest box , it is doomed. this happened to Miss Edmonton twice. She went away and licked her wounds and healed and 2 years later, had her own site. Now if this  was Princess, I realize sh e is older but also wise enough  to know to leave and heal.
years ago in San Jose, Fernando came along and beat out older male. that male was spotted a few weeks later not far from campus  and he stayed there , out of harms way. He also went back to same spot the next year , out o f harms way. He seemed to know his time was up. He was now into retirement.

we had a male DO1 a t WEber, that we watched from  ground. He lost Weber site, but last year we found him at misercordia. He was n o spring chicken.

you do not know for sure who it was, but regardless, I saw 4 really bad fights in Edmonton last year. some appear worse than they are as  they  are on backs a lot with talons locked. WE have seen a few on cams , where people thought there must be one injured or deceased and two of these have turned up at other sites.
So the saying  , no news i s good news is just that.
when viewing a cam, turn off sound when viewing a fight. Sound makes it  sound worse than it is.
talons crossed.

Not making any assumptions/conclusions,  given the Challenger flew off, and Fiona reserving her right to the nestbox, what does that mean for both the challenger and Fiona?
After a 46 minute battle, could we expect to see another challenge?
If not, and Fiona is the female in charge, what happens to the Challenger?

I know, I'm just weepy as it's the end of an era.  I hope, if it was Princess, - that she stays safe where ever she ends up.  She gave us many years of joy.

Yes have definitely noticed a much darker bird at the Radisson lately. - Seems like Fiona has made herself at home.  ;)
Is it getting too late to expect a possible return by Princess TPC?  :-\

Saw one of our birdies on the Rogers sign this morning, I was on Graham so couldn't see that clearly

If you see a bird and it looks much darker than you remember peregrines being, that's Fiona.  She's a dark bird.  :)

Send Hart out to Brandon, Hurricane is still waiting for a boyfriend!  :)

Now that would be an interesting pairing .... she'd give him more time to hang with the kids, something Joli and Spencer have never given him and he does so seem to like it when he does manage to get in there!  :D

Hart seems not to be contesting Pip for the Radisson nestsite (maybe I shouldn't say that out loud - knock on wood).  So have added Pip's name to the subject line.  He seems to be getting along well with Fiona and she is an almost permanent fixture at the nestbox and the nestledge but don't want to jinx things in case Princess does turn up or Fiona's and Pip's burgeoning romance goes south ....

I haven't added Fiona's & Hart's names to this thread as I'm not sure that they will actually nest here ... she is on the young side and though Hart comes and plays at the Radisson every spring, he never stays/manages to hold it.  Pip is a strong male and young enough that we can't assume he will come back to the Radisson and Spencer may be older but again, no reason to think she won't be back to Logan.  One or both of those returns would shake up both territories very quickly.  We have quite a number of birds we expect to return yet, so for the moment, I'm just going to wait and see ...

Of course we don't yet know if she will stay around, but here are a couple of photos of Fiona and her sister Stella as chicks:

I have one very dark photo of Fiona as a juvie, but when I lightened and enhanced it, I found that it also has a very dark copyright on it, so I can't use it.

You are welcome to use the photo Alison - we have a photo credit right on the image.  If you need to crop, just attribute the image to PFRP or Manitoba Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project.  If you need me to send you the image, let me know - this image is 448 x 336 but likely have a larger one I can send if you need.

Actually, let me have a look at some images I captured yesterday, I might have a better/clearer image for you ...

Thank you, TPC! Anything you might wish to share would be great.

Not higher resolution, she was just closer to the camera and the band was spun around perfectly for me to grab a clear image of the number.  (You know me and confirming band numbers by now  ;))  Downside of "closer to the camera" is that one can't see her, just her feet and belly - not the first photo you want to post of the new girl in town!  And yes, she does still have her USFWS band.  When I spoke with her bander I mentioned she still had two bands and he confirmed they hadn't updated her record yet - a second sighting of her in 2018 showed her silver band then too.

Thanks, TPC! So this is definitely Fiona! She has travelled far. May I please borrow your photo so that the people where she came from can see her? If that is okay, what credit do you prefer for the photo?

Interesting . . . you must have higher resolution images of Fiona, to be able to read her band. I can't read it in the photo you posted.

This bird appears to have a silver band on the right leg. From last year:

Fiona, C/84, was photographed on 11/4/17 about eight miles east of Cameron, Louisiana. She was photographed again on 1/20/18 about twenty miles northeast of Cameron, Louisiana. On 1/20/18 she was no longer wearing her USFWS silver band.

Waiting hopefully for Princsss to return.

I think our first bird back is Hart - he has a kind of distinctive looking combination of band numbers and I think I'm seeing shapes on his legband that look like they could be those digits.  But, we need to wait until we get a half-decent look at his bands before we can be sure.

Close to the middle of March and the thoughts of Peregrines returning is now on everyone's mind. We are now underway and have already begun to prep for another season. The question that’s always on our minds at this time is...will Princess (Minneapolis hatch 2002) again return for another season ? As you know she returned last year for her 15th season at the Radisson but they hadn’t produced any eggs.Last year the first bird back was March 17th...so it’s a wait and see when and who will return this year.
Stay tuned as the clock ticks down.
Cheers !
Dennis
