Birding Hour - Winter Birds
Birding Hour / Winter Birds Workshop
December 20, 2015 - 1 p.m.
Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre

Did you know that only 10% of Manitoba birds will stay here for the winter? Some birds even migrate south to Manitoba to spend the winter here! Who are they? What will they eat? Find out the answers at the winter bird workshop hosted by Paula Grieef, our Resident Naturalist.

The fee is $5 plus admission to the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre.

I'm passing this along from the organizers ...

4th Annual La Riviere Raptor Festival

If you are looking to get some fresh air this weekend and watch raptors in migration, I suggest you drive out to La Riviere for the 4th annual La Riviere Raptor Festival. Last year nearly 450 people attended the event. It's a great festival to see hawks and owls "eyeball to eyeball" as live raptors from rehab organizations bring out some of their ambassadors.  Kids love this kind of experience so you may wish to encourage your own kids or grandkids to join you on this outing. There will also be crafts for the kids to do, good food, displays and a photo contest. New this year will be guided bird walks for folks interested in looking for spring arrivals. Of course, people will be scanning the sky for migrating hawks and eagles. See you at the festival!

Date: Saturday 11 April
Time: 10am - 4pm
Location: Blair Morrison Hall, La Riviere, MB
Free Admission

In case anyone is interested in participating ....

Hoo-hoo are you hearing at night? Manitoba wants your owl count
CBC - 24 March 2015

There's a good chance one of your neighbours is an owl and Manitoba Conservation wants you to let them know if you see or hear one.

James Duncan is director of the wildlife branch at Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship, and he is also a well-known owl enthusiast.

According to Duncan, many species of owl call Winnipeg home, and, if you take the time to listen, you’ll hear their calls throughout our city.

Duncan is looking for keen-eared Manitobans to take part in the 2015 The Manitoba Nocturnal Owl Survey. Run since 1991, the survey takes place in the last two weeks of March and first two weeks of April.

Participants are given a location and asked to listen for owls between sunset and sunrise, recording information about what they hear.
