The only thing sadder than a dry empty nestbox on a rainy day is a wet Princess on eggs ...  :'(

This is what I have been thinking since the rain started, TPC.  Colorado Low, two words that make me cringe when I hear it in the winter. I have never heard it at any other time of year. Rain falling on Princess appears to be coming straight down. Two songs comes to mind with a slight change of words, "She is woman, they will survive"  :-*

A very wet Princess has been quite still all morning, suctioned right on top of the chick and eggs. Head down, eyes shut, getting wet but keeping the chick dry. What a great job she's doing!

Hopefully Princess won't get so drenched that she can't keep herself warm never mind the chicks. Of all times for the long term weather forecast to actually be RIGHT, this was the worst.  :-\ Watching will be tough, but watch we will... :-*

Looks like lots of rain pouring down on Princess right now. :( Sure do hope she can keep her lone chick & any others to come, warm & dry. TPC, how long can the newborn chick(s) go without eating? Do they need to be fed at regular intervals or can/will Princess wait till the rain lets up to expose her chick(s) to the elements in order to feed them? ???

They can go a few hours and with just one to feed feeding can go quickly.  Chances are this chicks first meal was 3ish hours after it hatched.  They can't eat much so mealtimes are very short, she can get them fed and back under her to dry-out and warm-up quickly enough.  And with the wind blowing about, she could block most the wind/rain during the process I suspect.  However, really the only way we'll know how they do is to watch I'm afraid ...

Had a look at the west side - nestbox is obviously dry but actually the building is keeping the ledge and the outside part of the box dry too ... figures this would be the year this darn bird chose the ledge ...  ::)

I'm not downtown but was just out walking the dog before it gets too wet - In St James (West of downtown) it's spitting lightly & breezy.  8)

Breezy and spitting is tolerable ... gravel is damp around Princess but she's got her head into the wall and she looks sound asleep with only a little ruffle of her feathers and an occasional gusty breeze doing more than that ...

Looks like the gravel on the east side of the building is getting damp - anyone working downtown?  Can you confirm that it is raining?  Looking at the west side of the building, the edge of the nestbox is still dry ...

Thought I would get his over quickly ... forecast for the next couple of days ...

Thursday
  • Day - Overcast with rain. High of 20C. Windy. Winds from the NE at 20 to 30 km/h. Chance of rain 100% with rainfall amounts near 26.4 mm possible.
  • Night - Overcast with a chance of a thunderstorm and rain, then rain after midnight. Low of 12C. Windy. Winds from the NE at 20 to 30 km/h. Chance of rain 80% with rainfall amounts near 6.3 mm possible.

Friday
  • Day - Overcast with thunderstorms, then rain in the afternoon. High of 15C. Windy. Winds from the NE at 25 to 30 km/h. Chance of rain 90% with rainfall amounts near 7.6 mm possible.
  • Night - Overcast with a chance of rain. Low of 7C. Windy. Winds from the NNE at 20 to 30 km/h. Chance of rain 50%.

Saturday
  • Day - Overcast with a chance of rain in the morning, then partly cloudy. High of 15C. Windy. Winds from the North at 20 to 30 km/h.
  • Night - Clear. Low of 3C. Breezy. Winds from the North at 10 to 20 km/h.

Sunday
  • Day - Clear. High of 17C. Winds less than 5 km/h.

Two thoughts that come to mind:
  1) if its rainy and windy, might mean more rain blown around than falling down on a small nestledge
  2) looking at how much rain is being expected when, it seems pretty consistent - bit more this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon but otherwise spread out
        - in 2008, all the rain (about what we are expecting over the next few days) fell between 0430 and 1200 on one day.
