Both chicks are up and enjoying the view. I think it's the male who is on top of the grate (less white fluff left)

For those wanting the count ...

  • Day 35 - Sat (July 6th) - usually earliest a chick will fledge and be half-way successful/safe - almost always males
  • Day 40 - Wed (10th) - an average fledge age for males/females
  • Day 45 - Tues (16th) - females usually fledge around this point - ours are a bit smaller these days so usually earlier
  • Day 50 - Sun (21st) - usually chicks are up and flying and generally past the dangerous first 10 day mark but depends on gender and when the individual chicks actually fledged.

Holy moly! Is that a chick perched on the grate right now?! Sure looks like one of the adults. If it's a chick, I can hardly believe my eyes. :o

It is one of the adults - the chicks are together in the shade along the front wall ...

BCCS I remember that about Vesper!! She was such a boss.  It always felt better when they wingersized from the drain cover.  That's a good memory of our sweet departed Vesper.

I'm tired just watching the little bugger flapping his wings.

I can't help but think of 2009 when Tupper, Ty and Vesper were doing the same thing that these two are now doing.
Usually Vesper would chase the boys off of the drain cover and reign supreme. The best thing about the cover is that is has lots of places where the kids can get a great grip. They just wrap their talons around these and they can flap and exercise to their heart's content without fear of an unexpected fledge.

I'm looking forward to fledge watch, even though it means getting up really early.

Heart Pounding Moment on the ledge!!!  That little bugger just did it again, jumped up right at the tip in the centre.  He didn't last long, jumped off and ran over and jumped on the drain cover.  Man I hate that!!

That's how the little terror figured out how to get up on the drain cover too !!

This is probably a silly question, but would there be a chance of a parent overheating while being a mumbrella?

Not a silly question at all -the answer is yes technically but it would be like staying on chicks in the rain -parent would stay only so long as their life isn't at risk - hard-wiring for self-preservation should kick in before they are at real risk.
