Meadowlark ~ male  band 94/A.

Hmmm, peregrines eat Meadowlarks, this young male is going to have to chat with Annie about living with an unusual name  ;)

She's not there now, so I don't know if she fledged or just some where on the roof.

I'm still watching this nest too RCF.  Looks like all I have to do is follow you and I get to see all my favorite birds, lol.  I think I saw this same scene earlier today.

There is still one chick yet to fledge and I would think it was the female. The other two fledged on Monday.  She was doing a bit of practising earlier today.

Definitely "Meadowlark", "Goldenrod" & "Cottonwood", the state bird, flower & tree! ;)

They certainly are a mouthful! I find shorter names are much easier to say and remember, but I guess you could shorten these names too!  They weren't my choice when I voted.  ;)

Ah... Thanks for answering my question, bcbird, RCF & TPC. I did wonder later if it might have been a blood sample that was being taken. Would they have taken a blood sample from all of the chicks? ???

Yes, they take blood from every chick.  ;)

Yes, the folks in Nebraska take the blood samples for genetic testing - part of a long term study.

They gave one of the chicks an injection after they were finished banding. What was the injection for? I know that one of the chicks died in the nestbox not long ago. Does anyone know what he/she died of? ???

They were taking blood. They do this at most the bandings in the US for genetic reasons I think.   :-\    The parents disposed of the deceased chick,  so who knows what happened to it.  ???

Watching that bit of the video again, I wondered if it was a blood sample being drawn, rather than an injection.  The syringe looked closed and empty to me.

So sad one of the chicks died.  At least there are still 3 left and hopefully it is not contagious.
It seems like this year there are so many chicks that don't make it or the eggs do not hatch.

I'm very curious to hear what this is about. I suppose if they are banding these chicks they will be able to take the little body at that time and have a look at it.  I sure hope there is nothing contagious going on in that nest.

I am sure they will retrieve it at banding if the parents don't dispose of it before then.  :-\   Whatever happened to it may have happened sometime overnight.

Sad News........one of the chicks has died. It was okay on June 4th, I wonder what happened? I was away yesterday and couldn't watch.   :'(

We lost one
Joel Jorgensen / 5 June 2013 / Nongame Bird Blog

As several Peregrine watchers have duly noted, one of our four chicks died within the past 24 hours. Hopefully this is an isolated case.  Currently, the other three chicks all appear fine and quite spry.  Coincidentally, the Woodmen also lost a chick about a week ago (at about the same age) and all four of the remaining chicks appeared fine at the time of the one chicks death.  I, along with Lauren Dinan and our partners from Raptor Recovery that included Betsy Finch, Denise Lewis and Janet Stander banded the Woodmen chicks on Monday.  The check-up confirmed the remaining four chicks were in good health. Hopefully the pattern recurs at the Capitol.

This is the first year, based on my memory, that I recall a chick dying in the nestbox at either the Woodmen or the Capitol. Odd that is occurred at both and fingers are crossed we do not see any more of this.

There are two nestboxes on the State Capitol building - RCF's circle is I believe around the one they are using this year.  I think the other box is just to the left around the corner from this box.

In 1998 they removed the nest box for building renovations and replaced it in 2003.  In February 2005 a roof was added to nest box and a camera and monitor installed. I believe they replaced the old nest box in 2009 with the current one. I have been in contact with Joel Jorgensen, the Nongame Bird Program Manager from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.  He told me there is only one nest box on the State Capitol building.

Here is a photo of the old nest box.

The folks in Lincoln have confirmed that 19/K is back at the Stat Capitol Building

"I serendipitously caught the male in the nestbox Friday afternoon and snapped a series of screen shots. Fortunately, I was able to decipher the band combination,”19/K”. This is the same male present since 2003 and the only male Peregrine Falcon to sire offspring at the Capitol.   Thus, the same pair is back again for 2013."

Actually, Alley has only been in Lincoln since 2005.  Angel was with 19/K in 2003 and 2004 - Angel is Princess' sister and Alley's aunt.

check out 19/K's photo at: http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/blogs/2013/03/male-peregrine-identified/

One Capitol Peregrine identified

I finally captured a screen shot good enough to confirm the band of the adult female Peregrine Falcon.   The band reads “A” on the upper portion and “Y” on the bottom portion, or in other words, “A/Y”.  Thus, this is Alley, the female from Winnipeg, Manitoba, present since 2005.  …

I thought I would put this here.

Hera’s new mate is from Lincoln, Nebraska! And there’s a little twist to his story…

The new male falcon, Mintaka, was originally banded at the State Capital as female – NE Game & Parks said that when there is uncertainty in gender, they err by using the female band size. (This is because females have larger feet.)

Join us in welcoming the new reigning king of downtown Omaha, Mintaka!

You have scroll down the page a little, when you see the falcon you're there!!

A Peregrine death in the family. :(

We received a call on Friday of a dead Peregrine Falcon found on the roof of the First National Bank tower in Omaha.  The bird was banded with the auxiliary marker (the color band with the letter/number combination in a large font) 98/H.   This particular band combination is familiar; 98/H was banded at the Nebraska State Capitol on 2 June 2009.  The Peregrine was given the name “Niobrara” as a result that year’s name-the-chick contest.

It looks like Alley is back from wherever she was for the winter. I caught the two bonding in the nest this afternoon.

The nest cam is working now and I was able to see that the peregrine has a black/green band on it's left leg which the male 19/K has.  :)   So hopefully someone will be able to read the numbers.

Nice to see somebody at the nest!!  The falcon looks like it has bands, but you can't see them......too far away and the lighting isn't very good.    :-*

:-* Thanks for this video, RCF. It feels great to see a falcon so close to Manitoba. Perhaps the groundhog was right on with its prediction of an early spring (weatherwise).
