The Next Stage:

Since fledging, K1 and K3 have spent the past three weeks honing their flight skills while being fed by Big Red and Arthur. Now the fledglings should be ready to attempt hunting for themselves. For the next month or so, the adults will continue to feed their young, who may supplement their diets with insects and other invertebrates while learning to hunt. Good luck out there, K1 and K3!

Sad News About K2:

As you may have seen, the middle chick, K2, was afflicted with an unknown injury to the eye and bill on the week of June 14. In the days following, it became increasingly lethargic and had trouble eating.

With consult from veterinarians and wildlife rehabbers, Cornell Lab staff made the decision to retrieve K2 from its nest on June 22 and transport the bird to the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital. Unfortunately, X-rays and other testing revealed severe and irrecoverable injuries that would have prevented K2’s survival in the wild or quality of life in captivity, and the chick was euthanized out of compassion on June 24.

First Flights in the Books:

On June 22, at 51 days post-hatch, Red-tailed Hawk nestling K1 was the first to fledge with a straight-line flight into the trees next to Rice Hall. The youngest chick, K3, followed suit on June 23, but overshot its intended target (the trees across the road) and contacted a campus building before fluttering safely down to the ground

Red-tailed Hawk Nest
Cornell University Campus

The next generation of Red-tailed Hawks have fledged from their nest above Cornell University and are now exploring the surrounding territory! These young raptors have made a habit of returning to their nest site after fledging, so tune in live for a chance to catch them in action. Watch cam.

Sadly one of the juvies has died. The following is from their blog.

July 08, 2015

Juvenile Passed Away

"It is with great sadness that we report the passing of one of the Cornell Hawks juveniles yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, July 7. Birders-on-the-ground observed the young hawk pursuing a squirrel, and during the pursuit it flew into a window of Rice Hall on the Cornell campus and died from trauma related to the impact. The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Companion Animal Hospital confirmed the hawk had passed away. There's no consensus as to the identity of the young hawk, but most think it was either F1 or F2. Surviving the first year of life for most birds is the most difficult year of their lives, and Red-tailed Hawks are no different. Learning to fly, hunt, and migrate successfully is a challenge, and estimates of first year mortality for Red-tails ranges from 50% to over 80%. The urban environment offers its own hazards, and these, too, must be mastered to be a successful hawk. While we are saddened about the loss of one of the F's, we are also hopeful that the remaining young continue to grow stronger through the summer and learn from the tutelage of Big Red, Ezra, and each other. Thanks to the Cornell Hawks community for your support at this sad time"

My husband and I have been watching a new nestcam. There are hatchlings and this view is incredible. They even zoom in on the nest so close you could??? touch them.

Looks like Big Red and Ezra are still in residence at Ithica. They have three eggs this season.  :)

2 of the chicks have fledged already!   :o  They grow up so fast *sniff, sniff*

Here's a video of the first one fledging.  I think it wasn't intentional though.  :D

Cornell University sure as some great webcams, but then I guess that's to be expected, with their Ornithology courses. Those chicks sure are getting big! :o

I am still amazed at the gentleness of raptor parents with their offspring.
Great captures rcf, I really have to get out there for a lesson on how to do this. :-*

Wow, those cameras have amazing clarity!!! Sure doesn't hurt having Cornell University (birds/ornithology is huge there) involved with your webcam  ;D
Those chicks are still not so cute but they sure do look great on camera.

I just took a quick peek at the camera and I'm not sure if I'm seeing leftovers from breakfast in the nest.  At first I thought one of the babies, but reading the comments section it sounds like they all survived. Whew!

I just watched a feeding!  The cam moved right in for a close view of mom feeding the two fluffies - so cute!  And the third baby was working his/her way out of the egg :)

I know this doesn't belong here, but TPC will move it to where it should go ;)

Because I participated in their naming contest I received this e-mail from Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Thank you for participating in the contest to name the hawk featured on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's live cam, streaming from the Cornell campus. After more than 1,800 suggestions for names, and more than 5,600 votes, the winning name is Ezra! This name was suggested by 105 people, who will receive a photo of Ezra as their prize. The name "Ezra" honors Ezra Cornell, one of the university's founders.

We hope you have enjoyed watching the hawks as they've continued to care for their eggs at the nest. Stay tuned during the week of April 13, when the eggs are expected to hatch! We'd also like to thank the cams community for the support and enthusiasm you've expressed through the chat, email messages, and online donations

They have zoomed out the cam so there is a different view. The people on the chat say this is the male and it looks and sounds like it is very windy today.
