I am having quite the giggle watching this view right now - and not of the chicks, but of the fact the feed seems to be streaming fast so that the people and cars visible at the top of the screen are zooming by.  It's hilarious!  :D

Oh - a chick just zoomed into view.  HAHAHA.

And the 3rd one just ran into view.  Bahahaha.  I think it must be because it is also freezing on me so it speeds up to catch up...

And is that the white wrapper in view too?  Too funny!

;) Beautiful names for our Brandon bandits!  Has anyone observed more than just Hunter going up the ramp?  He sure figured that out, no problems he says!  Love the wall around the roof top so that the phanatic trio do not fall off before they are ready to fledge!!  :D

re the plastic wrapper chase:  did you note that the last chick turned around and made squawks at the wrapper after the chick had scooted out of its way?  haha, very fierce little peregrine!!  must have been Maya!

What lovely names...love the video of the wrapper, had to go to a faster computor to get the Utube video, but, still can not figure out how you all can see the band colours...I must be blind...the only one I could see was the day, yellow bird walked right up to the camera.

Love the name choices! These guys are so cute to watch right now in their in-between gawky stage... that paper wrapper video is just a hoot, especially when it went after chick #3 who was squawking at it's sibs to get it out to of there!  Like gemcitygemini said... reminds me of the Roadrunner... beep beep!  ;D

The names chosen are perfect in so many ways.  Wow!  The name choices for project fledglings have always been great, but with the timing and associations here - so apt.
And the names are great anyway.

1050h

Maya, Hunter and Sol are bolted from their morning patch of shade to the south wall near the now dried up Lake McKenzie.  They'll probably be there for most of the afternoon given how hot and sunny it is suppose to be today.

Just got confirmation ...

Chick Names

The Brandon chicks hatched on June 5th which is the date of the Transit of Venus (http://www.transitofvenus.org/, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_of_Venus).  Because Venus has a retrograde orbit it is viewed twice in six years then not again for 100+ years - the next transit will be in 2117 - hopefully by that date, the peregrines won't need our assistance anymore!

Female (red) - Maya - the Maya were amazing astronomers and Venus was very important to them and they understood the planet's full cycle - the Venus cycle was especially important because the Maya believed it was associated with war and used it to divine appropriate times for coronations and war - Maya rulers planned for wars to begin when Venus rose.

Male (green) - Hunter - Maureen Hunter (http://www.canadiantheatre.com/dict.pl?term=Hunter%2C%20Maureen) - one of the transit expeditions was lead by Guillaume Le Gentil - he spent 8 years travelling in an attempt to observe either of the 1761/1769 transits but failing - his unsuccessful journey led to him losing his wife and possessions being declared dead.  Winnipeg playwright Maureen Hunter based her play "Transit of Venus" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_of_Venus_(play)) on his life.  Play premiered at MTC in 1992 (1992 was also the last year we released captive-bred chicks in Brandon - 1993 was the first successful nest)

Male (white) - Sol - the Latin name for the star, Sol, is widely known but is not common in general English language use - the Transit of Venus is an astronomical event, the voyage of a planet (Venus) across the face of the a star (Sol)

The wind is blowing on the roof and the three peregrine chicks are seemingly chased by what looks like a food wrapper of some kind.

http://youtu.be/cwafUS--g7M

;D ;D ;D Thanks for this very funny video, RCF! Since watching it, I often visualize it time and time again. I described it to my husband as such, imagine an old cartoon times 3. Wylie Coyote causing the Roadrunner to flee. Instead Wylie is in the shape of a food wrapper. Never knew a falcon could run so fast. Beep Beep!  :D :D

Thanks for the "chased" video, RCF.
They certainly do show off their puffaloons as they scurry!

Oh my gosh, that was too cute!! They sure can melt hearts with their cuteness.
