Got a call back from Bev. Mr. Yellow was knocked off his perch when food arrived.  He flew over and landed on a bridge structure on top of the hospital, between the CSB and the heart institute.  Dad flew over there to keep an eye on him.  Mr. Yellow is in a tight situation: there is not enough room for him to go anyplace but up, and he is not strong enough for that.  At least the parents can feed him if he stays there, but the worry is that he will try to fly off the bridge, and will not be able to manoeuvre himself out of these close buildings.  Meanwhile, Mr. Blue looks like he wants to join his brother. Bev will try to keep us posted, as events unfold. It is going to be a busy day with these rambunctious chicks!

Regarding the queries about treeing a juvenile hawk, I don't know for sure what this means, either, but I suspect, like BCbird, that if the hawk is chased by the peregrines and lands in a tree, they will make his life miserable when he tries to leave the tree, by flying down and attacking him.  But I will ask Bev and get back to you.

Glad Mr. Yellow first fledge was good. Here's hoping the other stay put until they are ready.

Just received a call from Bev down at the CSB.  Mr. Yellow just fledged.  He took off from the CSB and flew north.  Radisson did not follow, so Bev were pretty sure that his flight was a good one.  He circled back, and made a sloppy landing, but at least a safe landing, on the round part of the white structure next to and below the nest box.  Then, he moved up to the roof.  Shortly thereafter, his sister, Miss Red, joined him on the roof.  So, Bev is delighted that the first fledge was successful, and we hope that the girls and Mr. Blue do not get any ideas about doing the same thing, at least not yet, as they are not ready.

This is just a guess, but maybe they surround the juvie hawk and not let it leave the tree.  :-\

Becky and Peter saw a Juvenile hawk perched, not far from box site, and I hope adults do not tree it.

What does it mean, to tree a juvenile hawk?

Yes, what does this mean?

Thanks for posting bev's very informative fledgewatching report, Elaine. :) Here's hoping none of the chicks fledge prematurely, like some of ours here in Winnipeg this year.

Here is Bev's report from tonight at the CSB:

Today the kids spent most of the day on the net. Yellow band and Red band are best buds but they all are very close.  It was feeding day. They just got one drop after another.  My binder is with Peter, but I am sure there were at least 10 drops, if not more. 3 of them were whole birds, 2 of which were gulls.  Mom and dad even beak-fed one of the kids.  Could not tell if they all got their share of feed, but with all the drops, I am sure they did.  And one of the kids beak fed another.  I would not have believed it if another watcher had not seen it also.

I am impressed with these 2 adults of ours.  They seemed to sense that the kids just were not ready.  Lots of wing flapping and yellow band is by far the most advanced.  But they did not run food past them, like they do when they want them to fly.

I hope no one fledges before Saturday, but I have a feeling Yellow will go tomorrow. My fear is if one goes, they might all want to go and the others have too much white. They do look good though.  And selfishly, Peter will be there on weekend, with Elaine and Becky and Dave.

It was yellow on roof.

Radisson escorted a hawk out of the air space and dad escorted a set of balloons.

Becky and Peter saw a Juvenile hawk perched, not far from box site, and I hope adults do not tree it.

A lady from the apartments where Radisson and Dad perch, has come down a few times with coffee.  She is off till Saturday and watches all the time.  She can see what we cannot. This will help us when one flies.  She posted here once last year(Jean).

Got back about 9:30 p.m. from the fledge watch with Peter, Carol, and Bob.  All four chicks jumped on to the black mesh next to the nestbox, with Miss Red the last to make her move there about 7:30 p.m., shortly after mom made a food drop on the mesh.  The mesh sags, but they are still able to move about on it without too much difficulty, even though it looks like they are climbing around on a hammock.  When I left to go home, all four had made their way back into the nestbox, with Mr. Blue being the last.  It is so endearing to watch how these four wanted to be together in the nestbox, despite the fact that it is so small.  It just reminds me of how it is not only humans who form bonds.  I hope all four planned to stay there for the night.  Mom had already gone over to her building, about 8:30 p.m., for the night, I am pretty certain, while Dad was off on patrol.

man, oh man,
Now green band female , who has not been flapping, went out on wrung and decided to go over to net also. Hopefully it will hold them all .

I see 2 of them on net and red in box. , but there are 3 on net. I really am not happy about this.

this is day 39 and no females allowed out there.  :sunno:  :sunno:

this heart monitor  of mine is going to get a work over

7:51pm
Oh my, Red band female is out again. Now back inside.

I hope these guys go back for the night
this is all moms fault for giving yellow band his own food again.

I am going to walk away form cam and take a break. Been down all day and i told Peter to zoom them back in box. I keep phoning Peter when I see things happen and he gives me the scoop.

Elaine is down there also.

they may need them all.
