This is a complicated business, this incubation of eggs in our goofy climate! :P  Good thing we've got an expert and dedicated mom! :-*

She heard you, TPC.  She is trying out parallel to the back wall.

It looks like the water is dipping right on her head ::)  I wonder why she doesn't turn around?!? ???

Its like always sleeping on one side, you get uncomfortable and cramp.  Also, she has to keep the eggs equally warm and not all of them are next to her brood patch at one time.  At this time of the incubation period, she has to be even more mindful of who's where.  And finally, the scrape and the box do get in the way, particularly for her.  Too far in and her tail feathers get pushed up the wall which can let in air/wet and must be uncomfortable.  The scrape is higher at the back so the eggs want to roll settle further forward - the scrape changes shape a little bit with every move shuggle she makes because she's pushing her feet under the eggs in the gravel.  So, she'll find the spot that suits her at any given time.  Lying parallel with the back wall is probably going to be the driest for her, but don't know if the scrape is comfortable that way ... Ivy's a bit luckier because he's smalller ...

I was wondering the same thing, susha. :-\ Sure hope the chicks will be okay if they begin to hatch in this miserable rainy weather.

The chicks would be fine.  The air temperature is comfortable despite the rain, the incubating parent may not be dry all the time but the chicks (when they hatch) will be under cover so even if uncovered they would be dry in the current conditions.  Add to that that neither Princess nor Ivy will let more than a single drop of rain fall on the little darlings once they do hatch  ;)

0913 hrs

All four eggs still intact and clearly visible during a shift change.  Princess has taken over.

1030 hrs

Princess is still on the eggs not surprisingly.  She has a shift of the eggs about every 20 minutes but she doesn't let us see them all and no hoovering so far.  Not sure but I think she is trying to work them further under the overhang - not that they would get wet, they are far enough in not to, but she is.  Don't think she mind getting her tail feathers wet, but I'm pretty sure she's not thrill about a wet hairdo.

Just Ivy, snoozing on the eggs. You would never thing that there are four eggs underneath that small bird.
