Just managed to get on the Forum now, to read of Fyfe's death.  Just devastating news.  I am so sad about this, it is such a tough year for falcons.

1320h
Someone has made a couple of flybys in front of the nestbox, can't tell who but most likely an adult by the speed.  Think they may be soaring on the thermals and with the wind.  The clouds in the background are moving quite quickly.  They aren't close to the Hotel, so I don't think its anything defensive, just flying or perhaps hunting.  Beatrix jumped to her feet in the box when she caught site (or perhaps sound) of the flyby.

she's back up on the box edge looking down the way at Cade ... not contemplating the jump down right this second ...

Cade is at the far end of the ledge in the shade hanging otu and looking out.  Beatrix is in the box at the back napping again.  Its hot and humid so any little bit of shade is welcomed.  She almost made the jump down to the ledge before returning to the box, so I think she won't be left behind for long when Cade decides to take off.  That is unless her brothers come back to keep her company ...

Is there a specific reason you are asking about his bands?

I was just wondering if he is buried with his bands, or would go to another chick.
I'm thinking it wouldn't be very good luck for the new chick if you gave them another chicks bands. Since I've been following the falcons with you, the year Hurricane was born that was 2007 right? There hasn't been any chicks that have died around fledge time except for Mac and Kenzie in Brandon and I forgot to ask these questions then.

No the bands aren't recycled, every bird gets its own unique identity forever.

And you are right, Mac and Kenzie were the first two chicks lost at/shortly after fledging in a few years ... did a little looking and found the following were fledge-related mortality for all the wild-hatched nests we have had since 1989
2006 - the Little Daredevil (Radisson) died the morning after he fledged just like Fyfe
1997 - 1 male (Radisson) - collided with the old Eaton's building downtown *
1996 - 1 male (Prov Leg) - collision at Portage & Spence
1995 - 1 female (Brandon) - collided with McKenzie Seeds Building
1994 - 1 female (Radisson) - collided with Trizec Building - this was the last year we had an east-side nestbox because of the collision risk at Portage & Main
1993 - 1 male (Radisson) - collided with building (not sure which one) at Portage & Main
1992 - 1 female foster chick (Radisson) - collided with Canada Post Building twice - one on first fledge, again when released after a month in rehab
1989 - 1 male (Radisson) - collided with then fell down Eaton's smokestack *

* old Eaton's Building is where the MTS Centre is now; Eaton's smokestack is still standing it is just to the south from the spot where Fyfe died.

22 years, 6 successful nestsites, 126 chicks wild-hatched chicks, only 11 have died within 14 days of fledging.  A couple more died within a month of fledging but their deaths weren't related to poor flying ability, they died as a result of uncommon accidents.

The pictures that Dennis took of Fyfe are absolutely beautiful. It is so incredibly sad to hear the news of his passing. Thanks Dennis for the great pictures - isn't life crazy, as who would have known that those would be the last. My sympathies to TPC and all of the faithful watchers.  :'(

I am so sad about that beautiful little Peregrine.  We all have been faithful watchers and it is such a shame to lose one. :'(

Cade is asleep in the top front corner of the nestbox, Beatrix is asleep in the top back corner (inside) of the nestbox.
Very serene and peaceful.

Condollences to all, our poor sweet Fyfe.

Peregrine parents have to be so resilient. All the work they put into getting the chicks to this point. I know the first year is very harsh and deadly for our chicks, I guess the first days are way up there in the danger zone. :'(

Tracy what will you do with Fyfe? What happens to the bands he is wearing?

Fyfe has gone to Manitoba Conservation.  As for his bands, that will depend on what they determine is next for Fyfe.
Is there a specific reason you are asking about his bands?

:o :'( So very tragic to hear about the death of Fyfe. He was such a beautiful bird. I'm numb with grief. I know this kind of thing happens in the wild, however, knowing that, it doesn't make it easy to lose a bird you watched hatch and grow right before your eyes. My condolences to all, TPC, Dennis, Eye-Spy, Dr. Bob, fledgewatchers, the PFRP and to all of us here in the forum.  :-*

No one saw Fyfe hit, Mr Carmen just spotted him where he fell.
And it wasn't too long after he died, probably tried after the rain stopped.
